CUSTODY OR RELEASE RESTRICTIONS Parents with custody or release restrictions are asked to contact the WGS office at to verify current information on file. BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETS TWICE A MONTH On the first Thursday of each month, the Board of Education holds their Committee of the Whole meeting. On the third Thursday of each month, the Board s Business Meeting is held. Both meetings take place in the Board Room at the District Office (located in the northwest corner of the High School). Meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. THE SCHOOL NUMBER APPEARED ON MY CALLER ID We receive many calls each week from parents who see the school number on their Caller ID. If you receive a call from the school but the person does not leave a message, please do not call the school. The secretaries cannot determine from which number you have been called or the person who has called you. If it is important, a message will be left or an alternate number will be called. Our nurse will always leave a message. Please instruct your students to leave a message for you when calling from school. We greatly appreciate your cooperation in this matter. WAUCONDA GRADE SCHOOL S BIRTHDAY TREAT POLICY Please limit your birthday treats to prepackaged store bought items. Allow one treat per child in the classroom. Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom delivering treats to others throughout the school. Please also be aware of any food allergies that may exist in your child s classroom. Thank you for your ongoing cooperation!

4 Wauconda District 118 Parent Teacher Advisory Committee There will be a meeting for anyone interested in serving on the District 118 Parent-Teacher Advisory Committee. The committee is seeking input concerning the student/parent handbook for each school in the district. Also, a review of the State Board of Education guidelines on the use of behavioral interventions for students eligible for special education will be included at the meeting. This is a collaborative effort of parents, teachers, and administrators. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at 6:00 pm in the Matthews Middle School Library. If you have any questions, please contact your building Principal. February is book voting month for us. Students were given a list of books from the Illinois Library Association for all of our grade levels. Our teachers, Mrs. Calendo, and Mrs. Gonio have been reading books from the Monarch list for our lower elementary students. Fairy tales, biographies, nonfiction, and funny stories have been well represented in this year s list. So our Kindergarten through third grade will be voting on those books within the next few weeks. Third through fifth grade will be voting on the Bluestem and the Rebecca Caudill books as well. We have had some teachers who also have helped read some of the books for a read aloud. There have been some true favorite books from these students and I can t wait to hear how the voting ends up. Battle of the Books has been kicked into high gear. We have met with the teams for an informal question and answering session. In the weeks to come we will have some practice sessions so the students understand the whole process. We will be sending out more information to the fifth graders but here are some important dates: March 13 will be our WGS battle where our six top teams will compete for the two top spots. Then on March 18, will be the district Battle of the Books. All of our fifth grade students will go to the high school to watch our top two teams compete against Cotton Creek s and Robert Crown s two top teams. It is such an exciting process. Hope to see our parents come root on our students too! This past week and the next few weeks the computer lab was being used to work on some projects that have been introduced in the Library. Upper grade levels are researching Biomes and colonial times. Third grade is working on a figurative language book, while second is making a class A-Z book about fairy tales. Third and Second Graders listen to a story in the library and try to apply what they listened by adding to their Wixie book. First grade is learning how to use a Venn Diagram in Wixie. Each project right now is being completed in Wixie. The students will be able to show you their progress from home by logging on to their account in Wixie. I am sure the projects will be a huge success.

Coles Business Services/CSBO Human R esources Special Education Curriculum & Instruction William Harkin James LePage Valerie Donnan Dr. David Wilm Dear Parents: Emergency Early Dismissal Procedures Due to Severe Winter Weather In the event of severe winter weather occurring during the school day, it may be necessary to dismiss the students housed at Wauconda Middle School, Matthews Middle School and Wauconda High School earlier than usual. The reason this action would be taken is to allow the buses an opportunity to drop off these older students in order to return in time to take the younger elementary students at Wauconda Grade School, Robert Crown School and Cotton Creek School home according to their regular dismissal schedule. If this early dismissal was not done, we would run the risk of buses being unable to return the Wauconda Grade School, Robert Crown and Cotton Creek students to their homes, or very late drop off for these same students. In addition, we hope to avoid buses driving in a snowstorm when it is dark. Parents of students in grades six through twelve need to be aware of the possibility that this situation could occur due to inclement winter weather. If it does, we would enact the SchoolMessenger Service in an attempt to notify you that your sixth through twelfth grade student was coming home early. As a result, we ask that you make appropriate arrangements with your sixth through twelfth grade student in order for them to gain access to shelter after being dismissed early due to weather conditions. This type of situation does not occur often, but if it does we wanted you to be informed of our actions so that you and your students can be prepared. Thank you for your cooperation. Sincerely, Dr. Daniel J. Coles Superintendent of Schools
