1 TURNING POINT JOB DESCRIPTION March 2013 JOB DESCRIPTION Job title Recovery Nurse - Non-Medical Prescriber Department Substance Misuse Reports to Hub Manager/Senior Worker/ Nurse Manager Grade 3 Job purpose Key accountabilities As directed by the Nurse Manager and Hub manager to assist in delivering TP s Substance Misuse strategy which reflects our person centred values and the high levels of ambition we have both for the recovery of the individuals for whom we provide support by providing nursing and recovery related services. Ensure you work flexibly in a variety of settings, creating care and support plans that meet the needs of the service and clients in accordance with the recovery agenda, by;- Developing strength-based recovery plans with individuals that are; comprehensive, person-centred and individualised based on a clear assessment of that individual s needs and circumstances. Involving individuals and their family/advocates, where appropriate, in the planning of the individual s care. Completing accurate, person-centred and individualised risk assessments and risk management plans. Reflecting the structure and aims of SM s Models of Psychosocial Interventions. Ensure you deliver excellent person-centred interventions with individuals for whom we provide support within the Service in accordance with recovery plans you have created by;- Developing therapeutic alliances and effective partnerships to support recovery journeys, offering health promotion and harm reduction advice and screening alongside other clinical and psychosocial interventions. Work alongside the clinical lead, Doctors and NMPs to offer substitute prescribing regimes to improve health and promote recovery from the effects of Drug and Alcohol use., Lead on the local delivery of alcohol specific interventions including ambulatory detoxification programmes, hospital liaison initiatives depending on the needs of the business. Conduct assessments of physical dependency using a symptomatic withdrawal scale, using results to determine safe induction to opiate substitute treatments as required. Raising awareness of blood borne viruses, their transmission, treatment and the significance of infection, also providing vaccination service to those at risk and coordinating the onward referral of those diagnosed with a blood borne virus. Work alongside the clinical lead, Doctors and NMPs to offer substitute prescribing regimes to improve health and promote recovery from the effects of Drug and Alcohol use. Conduct assessments of physical dependency using a symptomatic withdrawal scale, using results to determine safe induction to opiate substitute treatments as required. 1

2 TURNING POINT JOB DESCRIPTION March 2013 Initiate service users via titration procedures safely on to a substitute prescribing regime and subsequently support the delivery of a pharmacy based supervised consumption scheme. Undertake phlebotomy and dry blood spot testing, as required, to undertake routine screening and testing, ensuring adherence to identified pathway for blood sample labelling, collection, obtaining results and signposting follow-up and any next steps planning. Offer wound care assessment and basic wound dressing to clients. Organise signposting to other services as required, and ensure clear pathways into other treatment arenas as appropriate. Ensure that procedures are constantly reviewed to promote best practice and evidenced based practice in accordance with UK Guidelines on Clinical Management, NICE guidance, and Turning Point clinical protocols and procedures. Utilise psychosocial intervention, in both one-to-one and group settings to promote engagement in treatment services and ownership of Recovery Planning. Ensure that the agreed quality and regulatory objectives, including IQAT and CQC, are met by prioritising, planning and organising own workload. Contribute to effective financial management in your own service by ensuring you carry out day to day activities and make workplace decisions that reflect an understanding of costs. Contribute to SM s growth and business development plans by ensuring you are an advocate for Turning Point to clients, their families, stakeholders and other external contacts and partners through delivering on commitments and presenting TP in a positive image. Ensure you observe Turning Point s information management strategy by;- Ensuring all data and information relating to clients is accurate and shared in the appropriate way with key stakeholders. Inputting outcomes data and other information into corporate systems in accordance with stated policies and procedures. Ensure you carry out day to day tasks in accordance with stated policies, procedures and regulations to assist the service achieve its compliance obligations. Ensure the effective flow of information within the team, with managers and external parties by passing on and seeking information required, raising unresolved concerns and taking an active interest in TP's internal communications. Ensure you deliver high levels of performance in a way that realises your potential, by;- Delivering on your own role performance commitments and seek to maximise own learning and potential. Seeking guidance, support, coaching and training and capitalising on the range of development opportunities provided by Turning Point in accordance with your Skill Profile. Pro-actively maintaining an up to date knowledge of medicine management and both local and national guidelines and agreements. Actively engage in clinical supervision and CPD. Help the service to optimise its performance and long term sustainability by contributing to the effective us of IT, facilities and other physical resources that support the achievement of the Service plan. 2

Acquired experience & qualifications Essential Relevant academic qualification NMC registered nurse Desirable Experience of delivering more advanced recovery solutions such as motivational interviewing etc. Experience in contributing to case and caseload planning. Experience of planning and providing harm reduction and recovery solutions in a substance misuse environment. Clinical Lead Deputy Clinical Lead Specialist Doctors Shared Care Lead (GPWSI) Clinical Psychologist Nurse Manager Recovery Nurses - Prescribing Nurses & Non Prescribing Nurses Our clinical roles are based within a supportive multi-disciplinary team working under the supervision of our Medical Director and together with the Shared Care Lead, Clinical Psychologists, Nurses, Recovery Workers, Counsellors and Peer Mentors working to improve the well-being of a wide range of service users. 6 Our Oxfordshire Service is supported by Turning Point s Senior Clinical Team: Dr Gordon Morse, Medical Director was the RCGP Drug Training Lead to South West England and sits on several Public Health England expert groups including Professor Strang s Recovery Oriented Drug Treatment Group Dr Fergus Law, Consultant Psychiatrist (Dual Diagnosis Lead) - has a national reputation as a leading practitioner and researcher in addiction psychiatry. Dr Jan Hernan, Consultant Psychologist (PSI Lead) - established our Psychosocial Interventions Groupwork Programme that lies at the heart of our Recovery Academy. Dr Jenny Scott, Pharmacist Lead supporting pharmacy liaison within our Integrated Services Tina Mobsby, National Consultant Nurse lead - will provide specialist input and oversees Nurses CPD. Choice of Work Location Our Oxfordshire Roads to Recovery Service offers support to individuals across the entire county. We have clinical roles within each of our Recovery Hubs and successful candidates will have a choice of the following base locations: Oxford, Banbury Witney Didcot Our Recovery Hubs will contain all services under one roof, providing a wide range of Harm Reduction, Specialist Treatment Services, Recovery Support, Activities and support for Oxfordshire Shared Care GP Practices. We will be providing a regular monthly update on the Implementation of the new Drugs & Alcohol Service and we are committed to ensuring all stakeholders are informed of the forthcoming changes. The new Drugs & Alcohol Service commences on 1 st April 2015 and we very much want to engage local stakeholders to develop the new Oxfordshire Roads to Recovery Service through: Sharing our Plans & Vision for Drugs & Alcohol Services Consult, Listen & Shape according to local need Develop joint working partnerships Establish effective referral pathways Ensuring we are increasing accessibility for underrepresented groups. About Us Turning Point has been providing services for people with complex needs, including those affected by drug and alcohol misuse, mental health problems or those with a learning disability for over 50 years. Oxfordshire Treatment Hubs: The new Drug & Alcohol Service will be delivered from a network of locations that will be open from Monday Friday and will be permanently staffed by local teams The locations of the new service hubs will be: Oxford Hub this will be a One Stop Shop that provides a wide range of Harm Reduction, Specialist Treatment Services, Recovery Support, Activities and much more. We hope to extend services to include evenings & Saturdays Banbury Hub this will be open 5 days a week providing a full range of specialist services in the area Didcot Hub this is a new location that will provide 7

8 services across the south of Oxfordshire Witney Hub this will have a dedicated team providing services 5 days a week in the West of the County Bicester Hub this will be open 2/3 days a week delivering services closer to where people need them Community Locations we will be expanding services within Shared Care & establishing community satellites to bring services closer to the people who need them. Services Available Each of the hubs will provide a full range of services and will be open to all service users. These will include: Open Access Services for all Harm Reduction Services Assertive Outreach Services Structured Groupwork Programme Recovery Support & Aftercare ETE Services Specialist Nursing staff A revitalised Shared Care Service Peer Mentoring Programme Dedicated Recovery Workers Complementary Therapies Activities & trips Many, many more. We want you to share your ideas with us & shape the new services we provide. Service User Consultation We have already commenced our initial consultation with Service User Groups and this is very much at the heart of our implementation. Working in Partnership We are committed to working in partnership with local Oxfordshire agencies to ensure that drugs & alcohol services are tailored to local need. We have already established formal partnerships with: Elmore Community Service together we will work to establish a network of community outreach venues Aspire we will work together to establish a dedicated training & employment programme across the County. Oxfordshire MASH we will have a dedicated drugs & alcohol worker attached to the MASH Team. We want to establish many more partnerships with local Oxfordshire stakeholders over the coming months.
