We propose changing the current interdisciplinary minor with 3 tracks to 3 stand-alone minors. The name changes are as follows. Athletic Coaching Track to Minor in Athletic Coaching, Sports Administration & Communication Track to Minor in Sports Administration & Communication, and Sport and Exercise Sciences Track to Minor in Sport and Exercise Sciences. It is proposed that the Minor in Athletic Coaching be administered by the Department of Sports Management and Exercise Science, and that the other two minors remain under Interdisciplinary Studies. Thus, the request is to change tracks to minors. No changes are being proposed in terms of the requirements. 5. The existing Interdisciplinary Studies Minor in Sport & Exercise Studies has three tracks or concentrations. They are as follows. Note: Students must take all prerequisite courses. 6. Provide a complete (new or revised) catalog listing for the program requirements, following the format used in the current university catalog. The Department of Sports Management and Exercise Science offers a Minor in Athletic Coaching (18 credit hours). The Athletic Coaching Minor prepares students to meet the New York State Department of Education established criteria to qualify to coach in elementary and secondary schools and in youth recreation programs. Students can organize the required 18 credit hours to meet the state mandate for strenuous/contact activities and non-strenuous/non-contact sports. Core courses include: Philosophical Principles and Organization of Athletics in Education, Health Sciences Applied to Coaching, First Aid Skills and Knowledge, and Coaching Techniques. Students are encouraged to participate in a coaching practicum to complete the minor. The Department also contributes to two minors offered under Interdisciplinary Studies: the Minor in Sports Administration and Communication (21 credit hours), and the Minor in Sport and Exercise Sciences (25 credit hours). The Minor in Sports Administration and Communication exposes students to (a) the behavioral dimensions of sport, (b) general management and organizational skills, (c) sport-specific management principles, strategies and issues, and (d) communications and ethical issues. The Minor in Sport and Exercise Sciences exposes students to the scientific principles and issues related to sport and exercise. The contributions of the behavioral, social and physical sciences (psychology, sociology, and physiology) are emphasized in this minor. Core courses include Sport Psychology, Sociology of Sport, and Physiology of Exercise and Sport. Students will choose courses in each of the following areas of concentration: (a) physiological basics, (b) group and organizational contexts, (c) developmental and educational issues and principles, and (d) personality, assessment and counseling. The coursework chosen for this minor is strongly influenced by the criteria that the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology requires for professional sport consultants. This minor will assist students to prepare for graduate work dealing with sport and exercise behavior within their discipline (e.g. psychology, sociology, kinesiology, and exercise science). The minor also will provide important information about sport and exercise behavior for students planning to be coaches, fitness specialists, physical therapists, and athletic trainers.

4 7. Please provide a rationale for the proposal, including a discussion of resource implications. If appropriate, indicate how the proposed new program or program change resulted from program assessment. Students are requesting separate minors. They wish to have the minor clearly define the academic program they have completed. The broad term Sport & Exercise Studies does not clearly define the student s concentration or track. Each of these tracks is basically a minor in itself. Fifteen out of 18 credits in the Athletic Coaching track are taught in the Sports Management and Exercise Science Department. Thus, the Athletic Coaching Minor should be a stand-alone minor within the department. 8. If a new program is being proposed, please provide a plan for program assessment. This should include, in particular, a plan for the assessment of student learning that follows the format of existing plans on file with the Office of Campus Assessment. NA. 9.
