1 BACHELOR OF RECREATION AND SPORT AND BACHELOR OF BUSINESS STUDIES CONCURRENT DEGREE Information for International applicants The Concurrent Bachelor of Recreation & Sport and Bachelor of Business Studies offers you stimulating studies and provides a pathway to a career in many aspects of recreation and sports management and related areas. The programme enables graduates to think conceptually and adapt to change. In particular, the programme is designed to: Develop intellectual and interpersonal skills Emphasise the broad economic, financial and managerial dimensions of a dynamic business environment Facilitate the integration of academic knowledge and practical work experience Foster a high degree of professional competence in sport science and business Produce innovative and creative graduates Produce graduates who are motivated to continue life-long learning and who cope effectively with change Provide technical skills related to recreation and sport science Provide communication skills necessary for negotiation, coaching, scientific and management level presentations Provide research skills, critical thinking and problem solving skills necessary to evaluate new information, concepts and evidence from a range of sources Provide professional skills which meet the needs of industry and society, and that will enable graduates to continue to consolidate, apply and extend their knowledge. Facilities include four squash courts, an exercise science laboratory, an aerobics-fitness room, consulting rooms and a massage room Students complement their studies with access to the EIT Sport Science Laboratory for advanced testing, as well as the Clinical Arts and Technology (CAT) Centre located in the Faculty of Health Sciences We take our sport seriously and opportunities to get involved in these activities are endless. Students choose one major alongside the Bachelor of Recreation and Sport (BRS) and are highly recommended to discuss these with an advisor from Business Studies. Accounting Major Graduating with an accounting major will enable you to undertake accountancy related work in the commercial and not-for-profit sectors. One further level 7 accounting course will be needed to meet the requirements for the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants in either the Chartered Accountant (CA) or Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) Colleges. Please discuss this with the Programme Coordinator Information Systems Major Typical opportunities after graduation include work as an IT Consultant, IT Business Analyst, IT Web Marketing Manager, Systems Analyst or IT Accounting Manager. Term Four Starts Monday, 12 October HB Anniversary Day Friday, 23 October Labour Day Monday, 26 October Programme Ends Friday, 27 November 2015 Management Major Typical opportunities after graduation include work as a Team Leader, Functional Manager or Senior Supervisor in a wide range of organisations and industries. Areas of work might include: HR; operations management; or own business. Marketing Major Typical opportunities after graduation include work as a Marketing Manager, National Sales Manager, Key Account Manager or Product Manager. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS In order to enter the BBS/BRS Concurrent Degree students must meet entry criteria for either the BBS or BRS programmes. BRS ENTRY CRITERIA Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: Admission by Academic Qualification Applicants in this category will have evidence of the achievement of: 1. University Entrance 2. The following discretionary entry criteria will be considered for entry when University Entrance has not been achieved. The achievement of 2.1 through to and including 2.3 will not automatically secure entry: 2.1 NCEA, Level 2: at least 75 credits at Level 2 in four subjects in one year, or

3 2.2 Satisfactory completion of an approved bridging programme 2.3 Completion of an overseas qualification which is considered by the Admissions Committee to be the equivalent of one of the above qualifications. Preference Criteria For students who have met academic admission by qualification, preference will be given to students who have achieved: 14 credits or more in English rich subject (subjects included, but may not be limited to English, history, art history, classics, geography, economics or Successful completion of the EIT Diploma in Recreation and Sport. Please Note: Entry to subsequent study is conditional on satisfactory academic progress in the first year. BBS ENTRY CRITERIA Standard Entry A minimum of 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 made up of 14 credits in each of two Approved Subjects with a further 14 credits taken from no more than two other domains or Approved Subjects, and A minimum of 14 credits at NCEA Level 1 in Mathematics or Pangarau and A minimum of eight credits at NCEA Level 2 in English or Te Reo Mäori. Four credits must be in Reading and four credits must be in Writing or At least 75 Level 2 NCEA credits in a maximum of four subjects in one year or Three B passes in the New Zealand Diploma in Business or An equivalent qualification Please Note: Entry to subsequent study is conditional on satisfactory academic progress in the first year. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENT Students are required to have attained an acceptable level of English language fluency. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study in English, approved scores on IELTS (6.0 Academic) tests, completion of accepted international equivalents, or completion of an EIT Bay assessment. ENTRY WITH CREDIT: You may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different forms including study while at high school, study at a private training establishment, workplace training, other tertiary study, life experiences or voluntary work. If you think you may qualify, you may want to apply for Cross Credit or Recognition of Prior Learning. Cross Credit is based on the equivalency of courses or qualifications. You would apply for Cross Credit if you have passed a very similar course at the same level. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is based on the assessment of your current knowledge and skills. You would apply for RPL if you had gained the relevant knowledge and skills through life experiences and informal learning situations. You will be asked to provide details of anything that you would like considered as credit toward your intended programme of study, as part of your application. Recognition of Prior Learning and Cross Credit cannot be awarded for a course if you are enrolled in that course. Please contact your Programme coordinator to discuss this option. SUBJECT AREAS Lifestyle and Health Promotion Community Recreation Sport Science Coaching and Leadership Sports administration and management Physical fitness and conditioning FACILITIES Lectures are held at EIT s Napier Campus and in the Pettigrew. Green Arena. Both venues offer students industry standard facilities complemented by a subsidised limited membership to the Pettigrew.Green Arena Gym. Students complement their studies with access to the EIT Sport Science Laboratory for advanced testing as well as the Clinical Arts and Technology (CAT) Centre located in the Faculty of Health and Sports Science. PRACTICUM, WORK EXPERIENCE Students work closely with a wide range of recreation and sporting providers to complete projects, assignments, and practicum experiences. ASSESSMENTS All assessments in the Concurrent Bachelor of Recreation & Sport and Bachelor of Business Studies courses are marked internally. Assessments include examinations, assignments, tests and practical demonstrations. Assessment is continuous throughout the semester, with two weeks for examinations at the end of each semester. DEGREE ELECTIVES A list of Degree Electives from other degree programmes as elective courses is available..
