Music and Movement in the Primary Classroom By Regina Leeberg and Nicole Nelson

Outline Benefits/purpose of incorporating music and movement in classroom Use of background music Songs/chants to start the day Songs/chants for lining up Songs/chants for miscellaneous transitions Incorporating music and movement into curriculum

Benefits of Music/Movement in the Classroom Research has shown that using music and movement in the classroom is advantageous. Here s why Embeds learning faster (alphabet song) Provides relaxation after stress Motivates Boosts achievement by activating the thinking portion of the brain Calms students Increases attentiveness and concentration Stimulates and focuses creativity Improves reading comprehension Creates smooth transitions within the classroom Creates momentum which decreases the opportunity for off-task behavior

When incorporating music and movement activities in the classroom, let the students know the purpose. Students of all ages should learn why you use music. Help them understand the differences among music which calms, energizes or inspires. Also, if you act positive when using music, and show that you believe it actually will enhance learning and memory, it will have a stronger effect. - Eric Jensen

Scientists are confirming what teachers have long suspected: Music not only touches people s souls, it also shapes growing minds. When children sing or play music, they become better readers, thinkers and learners. The more we discover about how the brain works, the more we recognize how crucial music is to children s learning. - Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer, Ph.D.
