Credentialing In Canada, there are three organizations which provide credentialing for physicians Medical Council of Canada, College of Family Physicians of Canada, and the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada

14 Licensure/Registration for Family Physicians

15 International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who meet the postgraduate training requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia may be eligible for a Provisional Licence* to practise medicine in a rural or underserved area of the province. *There are specific terms and conditions to this form of licensure. 16 Applicants must: Be graduates in medicine from a university or medical school approved by the CPSBC; Have postgraduate training appropriate for the practice and approval by the CPSBC; Have success on examinations acceptable to the MCC; Provide evidence of English proficiency, e.g. TOEFL or IELTS completed within the last 2 years; and Source verification of supporting documents. 17 Emerald Lake Resort, BC Family Practice Postgraduate Training Requirements Medical degree plus two years accredited and approved postgraduate training with a basic core of 44 weeks consisting of: 8 weeks in: 4 weeks in: Medicine Psychiatry Surgery Emergency Medicine (A&E) Obstetrics/Gynecology Family/General Practice Pediatrics

18 College of Family Physicians of Canada Certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) within five years of the start of practice. Most physicians complete certification exams within three years of practising in Canada. The CCFP designation may be granted without examination by the CFPC to physicians in approved jurisdictions (United States, Australia, Ireland and the UK). Must have MRCGP, MICGP, ABFM, FRACGP or FACRRM

International Medical Graduates may be considered for positions in underserved areas if they are eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.

21 Application Process Steps leading to an immigration application include: Application to Health Match BC We obtain preliminary assessment from the CPSBC Referral to the health employer (health authority/hiring community) Negotiations between physician and health employer Job offer/acceptance Sidney, Vancouver Island, BC

22 Next Steps Health employer/hiring community make a formal request for temporary licensure from the CPSBC and Confirmation of Need from the BC Ministry of Health. Upon receipt of CPSBC letter and Confirmation of Need, the physician will apply for permanent residency through the BC Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). Upon receipt of a work permit support letter from PNP, physician will apply to Citizenship & Immigration Canada (CIC) for a work permit. All physicians and family members are required to have an immigration medical.
