2 Page 2 ECU out and Wiring Comparisons Toyota Tacoma Trucks Authorʼs Note: The data in this guide was assembled directly from the engine and electronic transmission control sections of the Toyota Factory Service (FSM) Wiring Guides for each 4x4 and PreRunner Tacoma model sold in the US between The FSM Wiring Guide is the source and the final word. This guide does not contain new data, but it offers a better organization of the existing data. Why I did this: I made my first guide to make my personal automatic-to-manual conversion project easier: I had read that once I finished the hardware conversion I could simply plug the manual ECU in place of the automatic ECU and everything would work with no CELs! -- but I couldnʼt find any confirmation of this. I wanted to see a direct pin-by-pin comparison of the automatic and manual ECU connections to see if this was true, but none seemed to exist. Frustratingly, the FSM wiring guide seemed to organize its data for ease of drawing, not ease of use. I realized if I wanted this data side by side Iʼd need to produce it myself. Luckily, Iʼm a database developer and pushing data around is my bread and butter. I liked the way it turned out, and it didnʼt take me long to see that I could readily adapt my template to the remaining early Tacoma ECUs if I was willing to enter the data. This guide is the result. Caveats: 1. I am not responsible for any errors. Iʼve tried to do my best, but ultimately it's on you. Use these tables at your own risk. The wiring colors are included, so always do at least a spot check of the wiring before making any changes. If connector E6, 1 is supposed to be Black, make sure it is before you plug in a new ECU. 2. I'm doing this for free, but I am retaining my copyright to this data via a Creative Commons license. You may use it and share it but you may not sell it. 3. I AM NOT AN EXPERT, AND I AM NOT GOING TO TROUBLESHOOT YOUR ECU WIRING! Authorʼs Note, Version 1.0
3 Page 3 Iʼve compiled data for you to use based on the factory wiring manuals. That's it -- you get what you pay for. If you have questions, please post them to one of the many excellent Toyota Tacoma forumʼs: TTORA.com, CustomTacos.com, Yotatech.com, 4x4Wire.com, Pirate4x4.com, etc. A few notes on the content: The (3RZ and 5VZE), 1996 (3RZ and 5VZE) and VZ-FE wiring is very difficult to decipher. Toyota used different connector configurations for auto and manual transmissions for these motors, making it impossible to simply swap ECUs. Consequently, the tables for these motors are grouped by function, so you can readily see how to move wires if you do swap ECUs. For additional ease of use, I also included tables with each ECUʼs functions organized by ECU connector + pin. Youʼre welcome. The RZ-FE and all subsequent wiring tables are based on ECUs that share the same connectors, so they feature direct pin-to-pin comparisons. Again, youʼre welcome. As far as I know, all first generation Tacoma model years and motors have been included. One gray area concerns the 1999 model year and the existence of California-specific 3RZ-FE models. I could not find any 1999 CA-spec 3RZ-FE wiring diagrams, but one copy of the RZ-FE wiring guide refers to its connector illustration as Except California. Consequently, Iʼve listed the RZ-FE guide as being Federal, but I donʼt have the corresponding 1999 CAspec guide. If it turns up, Iʼll include it in a revision down the road. Speaking of revisions: if you do find errors, please forward them to me via PM on the various forums I am mosk or mosk22rte on the ones listed above. I will make corrections as necessary. Finally, I would like to thank the TTORA > Early Tacoma forum members that contributed to this project: Yotaoffroad27, Johnnyboy, and especially EnolaGaia, who found my initial thread while slumming on TTORA instead of manning his usual post on CustomTacos.com. Their feedback, help and support were extremely helpful thanks! Enjoy, Jeff Moskovitz July 2010 Authorʼs Note, Version 1.0
