1 California State University, Northridge Summer Academic Enrichment Program Spanish IIIAB A G Subject Area Fulfillment : Meets two semesters of the (E) Language Other Than English graduation requirement. Course Objectives : This course will review and extend basic vocabulary, culture and grammar needed for oral and written communication in Spanish. We will use a variety of methods to achieve the continued acquisition of the Spanish language. Spanish IIIAB is designed to be a five week condensed, year long academic course built around the foundation of Spanish IIAB. The student will be immersed in Spanish five days per week for five hours per day. Attendance is required for all five weeks. Course Description : Spanish IIIAB will develop and improve Spanish language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. The class is conducted in Spanish, thus the students will use the skills needed to advance in their language development. There will be a variety of materials used to achieve language improvement including: audio recordings; videos of grammar explanations designed to improve the student s aural comprehension; authentic texts; and teacher prepared activities designed to strengthen Spanish speaking and listening abilities. The students will actively participate in dialogues, paired activities, class projects and several projects. Course Goals and Objectives Correlates with the California State Standards and Supports the Common Core Curriculum : A. After a review the student will demonstrate orally and in writing a mastery of basic vocabulary and grammatical concepts acquired in Spanish IIAB. (Standards 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 4.1) B. Throughout the course the student will show increasing oral and written competency on tests and in presentations to the class. (Standards 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 4.) 1. Verb tenses: all the major tenses; the subjunctive; commands formal and informal; singular and plural; affirmative and negative. 2. Pronouns: subject, reflexive, indirect, direct, possessive, demonstrative, and those used with prepositions. 3. Adjectives:correct syntax placement, possessive, comparative & superlative. 4. Adverbs: uses and formation. 5. Syntax in statements vs. questions. 6. Noun/Adjective placement and agreement. (Standards 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 4.1)

2 C. The student will demonstrate increasing fluency and control of vocabulary in communicative and written situations. (Standards 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 4.1) D. The student will increase the ability to make requests, express needs, understand and express ideas in detail, describe and compare, use and understand expressions that show emotions. These functions will be performed face to face and in social interaction, using guided written compositions, short narratives, letters, and audio components. (Standards 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 3.2, 4.1) E. The student will demonstrate an ability to use and understand patterned learned expressions, statements, questions, commands. (Standards 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2) F. The student will demonstrate the ability to create simple paragraphs using correct spelling and punctuation when writing. (Standards 2.1, 2.2, 4.1, 4.2) G. The student will demonstrate the comprehension of important details and ideas from authentic short stories. (Standards 1.1, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2) H. The student will demonstrate the increasing ability to write short reports, narratives on selected topics, descriptions of other disciplines, persuasive essays regarding environmental concerns, cultural aspects of travel, the media, community issues, family, advice letters, historical figures, and fashion.(communication Standards 3.0, 3.2, 4.0) Course Outline and Topics: a. Uses of verbs like gustar. f. Por vs. Para. g. The future tenses formation and uses. h. Impersonal constructions with ser. i. Reflexive verbs used reciprocally. j. Present Subjunctive formation. k. The subjunctive with emotion, doubt, impersonal expressions l. Subjunctive with conjunctions and denial. m. The subjunctive with wishes and desires. n. Past Subjunctive formation. o. Sequence of tenses. p. The conditional tenses uses and formation. q. Present and past progressive with ir, andar, and seguir. r. Conditional and future perfect tenses. s. If /contrary to fact clauses.

3 t. Double object pronoun placement. u. Nominalization. v. Pero vs. sino. w. Verbs with prepositions. x. Vocabulary to be presented: physical descriptions; household chores; a planet in danger; celebrations; professions; fashion; ecology; nature; historic events; ideals; the future; professions; the news; and electronics. y. Give daily oral 1 2 minutes, memorized presentations with props based on the following scenarios: *Mi arbol genealógico (My Family Tree) * El candidato ideal a la presidencia Yo! (The ideal candidate for the Presidency Me!) * Un debate sobre la mejor ocupación (A debate on the best occupation). This is to be completed with a partner * Un recorrido turístico de una ciudad hispano parlante (A tour of a Spanish speaking city) * Un paramédico y yo al socorro en un accidente (A paramedic and I to the rescue at an accident) * Un desfile de la moda (A Fashion Show) * Una visita guiada de la casa de una estrella de cine (A Guided Tour of a movie star s house) * Un pronóstico meteorológico (A weather report) * Un documental de un viaje a América del Sur (A documentary of a trip to South America) * Un Safari fotográfico (A Photographic Safari) * Una tienda de animales domésticos Comprame a mí! A cumulative final exam will include vocabulary, grammar, an essay, and an oral interview. 2. Aural, oral, daily written quizzes on vocabulary and grammar. 3. Daily participation. 4. Accurate pronunciation. 5. Oral reports, written reports and essays. 6. Attendance and punctuality. Grading Policy: A = 90% 100% B = 80% 89% C = 70% 79% D = 60% 69% F = 59% or Below Instructional Methods: The class will be conducted in Spanish only. A variety of instructional will be used to address the multiple learning styles. Co operative learning, partner activities, whole class activities, chorale repetition, tapes, videos will be used to promote authentic communication, written and oral grammar activities will be used for reinforcement. Academic Integrity Plagiarism : Plagiarism: 1. the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work. ("Plagiarism." Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1). Random House, Inc. 20 Feb <Dictionary.com >.) Access to technology makes it easier to copy the work of others. Students will learn what constitutes plagiarism and how to steer clear of it. As a rule, if there are three words in a row that someone else can claim, cite it. Plagiarism is stealing and cheating and will not be tolerated. Plagiarism is against the law. The first time a student is caught plagiarizing, there will be a teacher/student conference,

5 a phone call home, no credit given for the assignment, and notification given to the SAEP office. Copying from a fellow classmate is also unacceptable on homework assignments and individual assessments. The consequences are the same as above. Cheating : There is a zero tolerance policy for cheating. This includes glancing at another s work, talking in any language during a quiz or test, using notes, copying from or receiving answers from another student. This includes the use of a translating program. The first time cheating is suspected the student will receive a zero on that assignment and the second time the student will be dropped from the class. Teacherease.com: Parents and students can access grades and attendance through a web based grade program at teacherease.com. By the end of the first week, parents will be ed the password to access the program. If you do not receive your password via , please contact the office staff at saep@csun.edu and request the password to be re sent. It is beneficial for you to refer often to the website to check your child's progress and attendance in class. If you have any questions, please feel free to me. Classroom Behavior : The student is expected to demonstrate mature, polite behavior and extend courtesy to everyone at all times: 1. Actively participate, and respectful verbal and nonverbal interaction with all opinions must be shown at all times. 2. Since differing views will be expressed, the teacher and the student(s) will mutually maintain a safe environment for courteous dialogue. 3. Respect is to be shown for all CSUN property. 4. No food or beverages will be permitted in the classroom. Snacks must be eaten outside between the designated breaks. 5. Warnings for behavior / discipline problems will be given once. Any further problems will result in a phone call to the parent(s) or guardian(s) and possible dismissal from the program. SAEP Electronics Policy Cell phones, music players and headphones are not permitted to be used during class hours. a. Please put your cell phone on silent (NOT vibrate). b. No texting is allowed during class. You will be given one verbal warning if the above is not followed. Should a second warning be necessary, your cell phone, music player and/or headphones will be confiscated and held by the teacher until after class. If a third time occurs, your cell phone, music player and/or headphones will be confiscated and held in the SAEP office and MUST BE PICKED UP BY A PARENT.
