Strolling through the city will certainly not give you a complete overview, but it allows you to approach things much more intensively - you can go the long way round, get to know backyards and parks, peek into narrow side streets and entrances to unknown houses. A city walking tour normally takes about 2 hours, unless indicated otherwise, with a maximum of 25 participants. The price for most of our tours is 150 incl. 19% V.A.T. The Pariser Platz, which has been completely rebuilt in recent years, will get you in the right mood for the representative architecture of the Hohenzollern dynasty at the other end of Unter den Linden: Zeughaus (Arsenal), Kronprinzenpalais (Crown Princes' Palace), Opernpalais (former Crown Princesses' Palace) and Berlin Cathedral. You will learn how the splendid urban design of Prussia has left its mark on the old new centre of Berlin up to the present day, and you will make an excursion to the most beautiful square of Berlin: the Gendarmenmarkt with the German and French Cathedrals. Museum Island, Nikolaiviertel (Nikolai Quarter), Humboldt University, Neue Wache (New Royal Guardhouse), State Opera House - this walk conveys all the different chapters of history and their impact on the Berlin of today. This walk can as well follow the opposite direction. In this case, the meeting point will be Berlin Cathedral. Tempelhof Airport The Tempelhof airport was built by architect Ernst Sagebiel between 1937 and 1941 in a typical Nazi architectural style. Meanwhile, it s no longer an airport. Price: from 150 Discovering "Germany's Oxford" City Tours of the Science Quarter Berlin-Dahlem The discovery of nuclear fission, the first uranium reactor, the development of the electron microscope a surprising number of scientific break-throughs have been made in Berlin- Dahlem. With the boom in German industrialisation, from 1871 Berlin not only experienced rapid growth as a political metropolis but also emerged as a centre of scientific excellence. The district of Dahlem in southwest Berlin, notable nowadays for its elegant villas, played a particularly prominent role. Starting in 1912 with the construction of the new Kaiser Wilhelm Society Institutes, this former royal estate became Germany s Oxford, as one unique scientific success followed another. Not least, because the ideal working conditions attracted scientists from all over the world. Numerous Nobel Prize winners lived and worked in Dahlem, among them Albert Einstein, Otto Hahn and Werner Heisenberg. And this great tradition of research still continues. Established in 1948, the Freie Universität occupied many of the older scientific buildings. From 1953 the campus was enlarged to accommodate the expanding student numbers, with new buildings added through to the present day. What do the 2,711 concrete stelae of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe mean? Why did the Soviets built a cenotaph in the middle of the Western Tiergarten? And why are there various places commemorating the victims of the Berlin Wall of the separated Germany? In the center of Berlin there are two places where settings of German youngest history concentrate like nowhere else: between the Reichstag (Parliament) and the Potsdamer Platz and between Gendarmenmarkt and Friedrichstrasse. Various memorials commemorate the persecution and resistance during the Third Reich, World War II and the abortive attempts to escape at the Berlin Wall. Starting at the Holocaust Memorial, the guided tour leads to some of the most important memorials, informs about their background and gives an insight into actual controversies and responses.

After this walk, you will know the difference. Berlin-Mitte is the quarter where Berlin's Jewish community had its centre from the 17th century until the Nazi era. Oranienburger Straße, flanked by gardens until the 19th century, was the address of the well-off middle-class citizens of the suburb. Just a stone's throw away from here, the area east of Rosenthaler Straße developed into a cheap residential zone for the poor and for Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, a variety of institutions has resumed the tradition of this part of the city. Learn more about Jewish everyday life, yesterday and today: New Synagogue Centrum Judaicum, kosher cafés and restaurants, Jewish High School... Along the Berlin Wall Where exactly was the Wall? This is the central question that this walking tour will answer for you. It makes sense to start this tour where until 1989 the world had stared at the Wall's most prominent part: at the Brandenburg Gate. There is no place in Germany where the impact of the Cold War is as easy to grasp as right here. 17 years after the fall of the Wall the iron curtain, which had turned to stone here, is open. The traces of the Wall have not only vanished from the people's mind but also - and even more - from the urban landscape even though the demarcation line of the Wall in the central part of the city was marked on the asphalt. This marking line of remembrance - sometimes just a strip of red paint, sometimes made of paving stones - is the thread which our walk will follow "along the Wall" to Kreuzberg, past the former Prussian Parliament, the Martin-Gropius-Bau, the open-air exhibition Topography of Terror and other important places of the German- German 20th century, until the tour reaches the most famous borderline control station in history, Checkpoint Charlie. Potsdam City Tour The tour concentrates on Potsdam's old city with the Dutch Quarter, which Frederick William I had built just like a Dutch town to encourage Dutch artisans to stay, and the Russian Colony Alexandrovka with the blockhouses built for the prisoner-of-war choir. But the tour can just as well focus on other themes, for instance the parks and gardens, the villa district - eg. the magnificent houses of the UfA film stars at Griebnitzsee - and the palaces from the outside.. Berlin History Berlin Under the Swastika This guided city walk starts at the Reichstag and takes you to important places in Berlin- Mitte where the history of National Socialism can be illustrated by concrete examples. Among the locations visited during the tour are the Brandenburg Gate, the former governmental street Wilhelmstraße where Hitler resided in his centre of power, and the area of the former Prinz-Albrecht-Palais where the Nazi terror organizations organized the atrocities that they perpetrated on millions of people. You will get information on the different use that the Third Reich, the GDR and the Germany of today have made of these buildings. So you will learn, for example, that in what is nowadays the Parliament of Berlin judges were sworn in during the era of national socialism. The entire world gathered at one location. Old and New Embassies Mexico and the Scandinavian countries around the Klingelhöfer Dreieck, Great Britain, France around Pariser Platz: the extravagant embassy buildings in Berlin, partly new and partly converted, especially in the Tiergartendreieck and around the Pariser Platz, have found their way into the headlines. You will see that the "showpieces" of the different countries are as diverse as these countries themselves and their cultural traditions. This walking tour explores architecture, geography, history and diplomacy and thus will help you to decipher the "message of the embassies". Prices on request Berlin - Capital of the GDR History, politics and society of the German "Workers' and Peasant's State", as it called itself. Berlin-Mitte was the centre of East-Berlin, and East-Berlin as the state capital was the centre of the GDR. That's why the history of the German workers' and peasants' state is mirrored much more clearly here than anywhere else. During the tour from Rosa- Luxemburg-Platz, past Alexanderplatz to Schloßplatz, you will get an overview of the events and developments which preceded the foundation of the GDR. Various buildings and monuments such as the Haus des Lehrers (House of the Teacher), the former State Council Buildling and the Marx-Engels Forum help to illustrate the way the GDR functioned as a system. Quite logically, the walking tour ends at the former Central Committee of the socialist unity party SED where the final collapse of the system put an end to "really exisiting socialism" on 9 November The government in Berlin Yesterday - Today - Tomorrow This tour mainly provides an insight into Berlin s role as seat of government. While walking along main legislative and government buildings, the interplay of the Federal Government and each German state, in the past and nowadays, will be demonstrated. Further aspects are, among others, the Wilhelmstraße as a center of German policy in history and present, the Federal Council and Ministry of Finance, the Ministergärten: seat of the Representation of each German state, as well as the "new" Reichstag and the Spreebogen.

5 5 Neighborhoods Prenzlauer Berg Neighbourhood Walk In the communist era, Prenzlauer Berg provided living space for artists and intellectuals who found a niche in the decayed tenements of the former working-class district. After the fall of the Wall the area was literally overrun by (lifestyle) artists because it offered previously undreamed-of possibilities. On the one hand, Berlin is almost at its most authentic here, with the many old buildings giving a flavor of the pre-war city; on the other hand, by now the district has not only lost its original working-class milieu but also the creative scene of people doing their own thing that had grown here in the 1980s and 1990s. It has now been nearly completely renovated, and the smart set and solid respectable culture are moving into the area. The Scheunenviertel (Barn Quarter) - Myth and Real The term "Scheunenviertel" is still maintained as a synonym for something mysterious, disreputable and unfamiliar. Where exactly were the slums where many impoverished Jewish settlers from Eastern Europe used to live? What did actually happen between Volksbühne and Volkskaffeehaus? group rates: 165, red. 135, foreign language plus 25 incl. VAT Friedrichshain Neighbourhood Walk Friedrichshain originally was the smallest central borough of Berlin. Its southern border is the East Side Gallery (the longest piece of the Berlin Wall left over), and in the north it ends at the Volkspark Friedrichshain which gave its name to the borough. The old workers' quarter is much less puffed-up than Mitte and not as chic as Prenzlauer Berg and thus stands for a rather moderate economic and architectural boom after the fall of the Wall. The area around Warschauer Straße railway station still was a deserted no-man's-land some years ago; now it has turned into the new "Oberbaum City". Further to the north, low rents attracted lots of students in the early 1990s and encouraged them to give a new atmosphere to the neighbourhood. Nowadays you see scaffoldings almost in every street. Even the Karl-Marx-Allee, a socialist prestige project which had been neglected for a long time, is being renovated and modernized. The tour will give you a thorough overview of how Friedrichshain changed from a workers' borough at the beginning of the 20th century into an area with a dynamic culture and economy in our days. Kreuzberg Neighbourhood Walk Kreuzberg, the melting-pot: Kreuzberg has become a synonym of multicultural life in Berlin. Here, daily life is marked by a variety of lifestyles and cultural forms that can be exciting and enriching but also can lead to social conflicts. The meeting point for the walking tour is Kottbusser Tor, one of the social problem areas. Through the busy Turkish street life on Adalbertstraße, just around the corner, you get to the main street of the neighborhood, Oranienstraße, with its most diverse shops, cafés, pubs, restaurants and clubs. The lively atmosphere of the neighbourhood, the old buildings many of which are neglected and have fallen into disrepair, and the typical Kreuzberg "chic" add up to a very special mixture.

6 Night Adventure: Art and Local Life Berlin-Mitte the way only insiders know it. Pubs, art and the scene merged into each other and made up a very special mixture already before the Wall came down. The walk starts at the alternative art centre Kunsthaus Tacheles and leads you in a slalom through side streets and back yards, into studios and factories, trendy pubs and bars for the in-crowd. The tour ends in a neighbourhood pub. You will gain an inside view into quintissential Berlin ambience. Back in the Roaring 20's the complex also housed Oriental restaurants, varieté theaters and wine-bars. And the "normal" city catacombs like sewers, pneumatic dispatch system, brewery cellars and archaeological excavations are not even the lion's share of it. The most part of it is rather forgotten tunnels of subway and S-Bahn, bunkers, underground mazes, tunnels for spies and escapees: a good way of getting some fresh perspectives on the history of the past one hundred years. On this tour you can see bunker facilities from the times of World War II and of the Cold War which were built into a traffic building in the borough of Wedding in the 1930s. While at the historic sites, we present film sequences and play sound recordings. Our route covers the classic sightseeing attractions, but offers significantly more than a normal city tour.
