2 Dear Parents and Families, SUPERHERO SUMMER CAMP PARENT PACKET 2016 A Message to You: Thank you for choosing to send your children to the YMCA Superhero Summer Camp! We have a very fun summer ahead. Our goal this summer of 2016 for each child is for them to learn the importance of honesty, respect, responsibility, and having a caring attitude. We will do our best to incorporate each of these skills within the activities and field trips. In addition to the core values, each week the children will also be exposed to important life skills such as cooperation, personal best, enthusiasm, individuality, determination, active listening, and many more. We believe these are major components of building a strong foundation for future success. We have high expectations for behavior at all of our Y programs. Our staff is tolerant and understanding, but we will deal with disruptive behavior. Our method is designed to promote the development of self-direction, self-control, and self-behavior. This will be accomplished through natural and logical consequences, redirection, and setting limits. We believe in every child and want every child to feel safe at all of our locations. More information about behavior management is found in the Parent Handbook at ymcamemphis.org. We spent months preparing for this summer to be the best experience for your child. Our staff has been trained to promote learning and growth and to care for each child. We look forward to getting to know your children better and for them to have the best summer yet Sincerely, Amber Puckett Youth and Family Director amber.puckett@ymcamemphis.org Billing Information/Questions: Tina Brannon Lori Franklin Executive Child Care Billing Clerk Assistant Child Care Billing Clerk , ext , ext tbrannon@ymcamemphis.org lfranklin@ymcamemphis.org

4 SUPER SCOOP ON Y-CAMP Our camp strives very hard to create a true camp environment for your children. Summer Camp is a place where children can go to experience things about life. It allows children to enjoy the experiences and people around them. Our daily schedule allows for children to have fun while engaged in learning activities. Our camp focuses on traditional camp activities that include field trips, swimming, enrichment learning, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum, songs and games, and a whole lot more, all designed to increase children s knowledge and skill set. Our Camping Administration Team has developed goals that will help to guide us and provide this great experience for your children. Below are the goals and how they relate to our program: Learn values YMCA Day Camp helps children of all faiths develop moral values and ethical behavior consistent with Christian principles. The YMCA promotes the four values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility as essential for character development. Through day camp, youth learn to define and demonstrate these values in everything they say and do. Improve personal and family relationships The YMCA supports families of all kinds by giving children a safe place to grow into responsible members of their families and communities. During day camp, youth learn to care for, communicate, and cooperate with others. We encourage children to improve personal relationships everyday through our family groups. Each child will be assigned a family group and will build lasting memories and relationships with the people in this group. We also have two family nights during the summer, because we believe in the importance of family. Our family nights are focused on families having fun with each other and developing relationships with other families. Appreciate diversity Diversity is the mosaic of people who bring a variety of backgrounds, styles, perspectives, beliefs, and competencies to the YMCA. By practicing inclusion, the Y not only address societal trends and remain relevant to their communities but also remain true to the YMCA mission, goals, and values. YMCA Day Camps teach youth to respect and celebrate these differences, fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and able to contribute to their community. Become better leaders and supporters For youth to emerge as better leaders, they practice doing what leaders do through work projects around camp, daily camp responsibilities, and community service. Children develop leadership skills by planning and executing ideas that help others, and they benefit most if there are three parts to the endeavor: identification of learning objectives; a meaningful project; and reflection before, during and after the project. Develop Specific skills and assets Diverse activities help campers acquire new knowledge and discover ways to grow in spirit, mind, and body through a STEM and literacy based curriculum. YMCA Day Camps help youth succeed in their daily lives through programs that build self-reliance, practical skills, and good values. This might mean learning to swim, building a fire, getting along with others, using a computer or speaking a foreign language. We also allow older children to pick the activity out of the different ones offered, so that they can be engaged in something that interests them. Have fun Life is enjoyable. Fun and humor are essential qualities of day camping and contribute to youth feeling good about themselves and others. Our success in reaching the other six objectives often depends on our ability to incorporate fun and friendship to make these new lessons stick.
