Another important consideration is how much maintenance is involved and the associated cost. Many people assume that running a whole-house underfloor heating system will be more expensive, than a traditional radiator system but this is not the case. 10 A-Z for Underfloor Heating Suitability of floor for underfloor heating Underlay Insulation Thickness & density of wood flooring Before ordering the wood flooring, check that the selected flooring is compatible with underfloor heating. For floating and nailed floors it is advisable to use a specialist wood floor underlay over underfloor heating. You must ensure it is thin and not the foil-reflective type. The maximum TOG rating of all materials above the floor heating system, including the floor, should not exceed.. Always use suitable insulation under the underfloor heating system. Proper insulation will reduce heatup times and keep running costs to a minimum. Warmup supplies a number of suitable insulation types. (Please ask in-store, contact Warmup on or visit Wood conducts less heat than stone or tiles, so the thinner it is, the higher the output of the system and the faster the heat-up time. The maximum thickness for efficient heat output is about 8mm but thicker boards can be used at a lower ouput. The density of the wood flooring will also influence the heat transfer of the underfloor heating system. Higher density floors transmit heat better. Level tolerances Cement screed subfloors All sub-floors must be flattened to the following tolerances: Thin plank flooring: +/- mm per linear metres in all directions. Wide plank flooring: +/- mm per linear metres in all directions. Patterned floor (e.g. Parquet): +/- mm per linear metres in all directions. Cement screed subfloors must have a moisture content of less than % and a relative humidity (ErH) of less than 7%. Anhydrite screed must have a moisture content less than 0.%. Measurements can be taken 8 hours after any heating systems and dehumidifiers have been switched off, using a BS 80 hygrometer. Hygrometer testing involves the drilling of a mm (width) x 0mm (depth) hole into the screed by the subfloor contractor. The contractor should then insert a protimeter humidity sleeve into it; one test must be conducted for every square metres. The subfloor contractor must take special care to avoid damage to the underfloor heating, plumbing or electrical components beneath the surface of the screed. Fast dry and rapid set screed and self-levelling compounds can accelerate the time taken to achieve the correct moisture levels. A-Z for underfloor heating Joist & plywood subfloors Expansion gaps If fixing plywood to joists, the plywood must have a minimum thickness of 8mm and be screwed to the joists at 00-00mm centers. Sheets must have a moisture content of less than 0%. All sheet joints must be laid in a staggered, brickwork pattern. Sheets must not be joined at door thresholds; a single sheet must traverse the threshold. An expansion gap should always be left around the perimeter of the floor, in doorways between rooms and at all vertical surfaces. This is typically between 0-0mm. Ask your flooring supplier for more details particular to your floor. If the floor is greater than m wide, it is advisable to leave a gap of about mm every -7 rows to allow for extra expansion. 0

11 Letting your flooring acclimatise Moisture content of the wood flooring The wood flooring should be stored in the building to acclimatise during the heating systems pre-floor installation heating cycle also follow the flooring manufacturer s guidelines. During installation it is recommended that the floor surface temperature should be maintained at C. The air temperature should be maintained between - C and the atmospheric relative humidity between 0-0%. After installation, allow the floor to acclimatise for at least 8 hours before turning the system back on. Typically limit the initial floor temperature to C and increase by C a day until the desired floor temperature is achieved. Check this procedure with your flooring supplier as the ambient temperatures will vary depending on the time of year the installation takes place. Engineered wood is more stable than solid wood but it is important for both types that the moisture content is typically between 0-% when laid, which will reduce to 8-9 % when heated. Check with your supplier or manufacturer when ordering and ensure that the flooring is transported and stored in a dry environment. The heating system should be activated and the temperature increased in daily increments of C, i.e. day one C, day two 0 C, day three C until the maximum floor temperature of 7 C is reached. The maximum temperature should be maintained for at least 8 hours or in the case of cement screed, until the correct screed moisture levels are achieved (See cement screed). Pre-installation heating cycle Relative humidity of the room The heating system should then be cooled observing the same C adjustments per day. When the heating system has returned to the lowest level, switch the heating system off for 8 hours. Re-activate the heating system and once again increase the temperature by C per day until the installation surface temperature of the sub-floor of C is reached. C should be maintained throughout the installation period. Ambient temperatures depending on the time of year of installation may not permit the C to be maintained. Consult with the flooring manufacturer on how best to proceed. NOTE: The heating system should not be operated until any floor protection has been removed. The moisture content of the air indoors will be affected by the outdoor climate and humidity gradients will affect how much moisture wood will absorb. Wood is a hygroscopic material and these variations can lead to shrinkage and expansion accordingly. Air humidity is expressed as a percentage of maximum humidity of air at saturation point and should be maintained typically between 0% and 0%. During installation, the atmospheric relative humidity (RH) should not fall below 0% or exceed 0%. Room temperatures must not fall below 0 C. The floor post installation should maintain the same relative humidity levels. When radiant underfloor heating systems are used, the system must be properly regulated to ensure that the floor surface temperature does not exceed 7 C. Your installation method will be influenced by the type of existing subfloor, or the type you are planning for your project. The choice is typically a matter of owner preference, house construction and floor height restrictions. New-build Hydronic systems are often used in new-build projects, or major refurbishments such as extensions where the subfloor build height is not an issue. Hydronic systems (i.e. water-based) are also fully compatible with renewable heat sources such as air source heat pumps and solar water heating. The pipes are covered with screed and once dry (which can take several weeks), the floor acts as a thermal mass. The system must be dry and operational before laying the wood flooring. The Warmup Inscreed Cable System, a mm heating cable protected by multiple layers of metal shielding and insulation, is also ideal for installation within screeded floors of any size. Refurbishments Electric systems are typically used in refurbishment projects due to their low build height and simple installation. The lightweight build required for electric system subfloors means they do not raise floor levels significantly. They are ideal for hybrid installations where a hydronic system is installed on the ground floor and electric on upper floors. It is possible to use a specialist wood floor underlay over underfloor heating, but you must ensure it is thin and not the foil-reflective type. Solid wood floors Engineered wood floors Multi layered floors Parquet floors Laminate floors Is available in both soft and hardwood, made from a single piece of timber. It is very susceptible to humidity and temperature change and can be prone to gapping, cupping and crowning. Some types of solid wood are available which are compatible with underfloor heating. Always check with the flooring supplier before ordering. Is constructed from several layers (typically three) of wood, bonded together in the form of a plank. The layers are bonded together with the grain of each layer at 90 o to the adjacent layer to give dimensional stability. The top wear layer is hardwood, typically -mm thick. The core and bottom layers are often soft woods such as pine. Engineered wood is less susceptible to the affects of moisture and temperature change and most types are very suitable for use with underfloor heating. Always check with the flooring supplier before ordering. Are similar to engineered wood in construction but the top layer is a thin veneer bonded to a composite core with a plywood bottom layer, such as birch. Plybacked multi layer floors are very stable and many high quality types are suitable for use with underfloor heating. Always check with the flooring supplier before ordering. Parquet flooring is available in various types of either solid wood or engineered wood and many are suitable for underfloor heating. Always check with the flooring supplier before ordering. The wood setting prevents the floor temperature from exceeding 7 C, so there is no danger of warping or damage to the floor through overheating. Hydronic underfloor heating Warmup hydronic heating systems are particularly suitable for new build projects. The heating system operates by circulating warm water through pipes including PEX-a (cross linked polyethylene) and multilayer composite AL-PERT pipes. These are installed in a conductive floor structure (screed), or in conductive elements (diffusion plates), which are embedded into the subfloor to transfer the heat to the floor surface. The floor becomes a large low-temperature heat emitter, warming the floor surface and transferring heat to the room or space. The major method of heat transfer from the heated floor surface is by radiation, it amounts to 0%-0% of the output; the remainder is made up by convection and conduction. Further, having slightly warmer feet than the head leads to better comfort conditions. Unlike radiators, hydronic underfloor heating systems do not need to run at a high temperature. Typically, the temperature of the water in an underfloor heating system pipe is - C, warming the floor to a temperature of 7 C as opposed to the c.80 C flow and surface temperature of a radiator system. Room temperature is controlled by Warmup s bespoke ie Energy- Monitor Thermostat. In the case of multi-zone installations, i.e. multiple rooms in the building or home using hydronic underfloor heating; a central wiring system is used where the thermostats are controlled depending on the specific heating output required per zone.

16 Fixing Method: Stapled/Nailed Floors Concrete subflloor Electric heating Warmup Loose Wire System The Loose Wire solution is recommended for secret nailed floors where floor height is an issue. Battens of a minimum 0mm high by 0mm wide, should be fitted to the existing concrete subfloor, above a polyethylene (PE) damp proof membrane. The battens should be kiln dried and fitted at spacings of between 00mm (for 00mm spaced wire) and 0mm from centre to centre. Next, fix 0mm Warmup Insulation Board between the battens before laying the Loose Wire heater on the insulation board. The heater must be routed through notches in the battens, before being covered with a 0mm layer of self-levelling compound which must finish flush with the top of the battens. This creates a level surface on which to install the wood flooring. Check the heater before laying the self-levelling compound. An optional thin wood floor underlay, suitable for electric underfloor heating, can now be laid over the self-levelling compound. Lay the wood floor on the self-levelled surface and nail or staple into the battens below, keeping the boards perpendicular to the battens. Allow an expansion gap around the edge of the floor. The screed will store the generated heat allowing for more efficient energy use. Battens; of a minimum 0mm high by 0mm wide, should be fitted to the subfloor over a polyethylene vapour barrier. The battens should be kiln dried and fitted at spacings of between 00mm (for 00mm spaced wire) and 0mm from centre to centre. Install at least 0mm of rigid insulation board between the battens.
