1 Page Layout The first time you turn on your Memory Typewriter, a preset format is activated. It is set for general typing purposes. These settings remain active until you change them or recall a file with different settings. Margins and Tabs Margins and tabs for Type Mode, Line Mode, and Mem Mode are set in Type Mode, but can be changed in Mem Mode when text is recalled for editing. Margins and tabs are set using the typing scale which appears on the display in Type Mode. A blinking cursor indicates the typing position. The letter L indicates your left margin setting. The letter R indicates your right margin setting. In the example below, the left margin is set at 12. End of Page Pitch Line Impression Keyboard Margins In Type Mode, to signal that you are near the right margin, the typewriter will beep 5 spaces before the margin. In Mem Mode, the text will automatically wrap to the next line. Margins are preset depending on the pitch setting. They are: 10 Pitch 12 Pitch 15 Pitch (Pica) (Elite) (Micro) Left Margin Right Margin Smith Corona Corporation Page Layout 2-1
2 Type Move Cursor to Desired Left Margin Move Cursor to Desired Right Margin Code Margin L/R Advance + Margin L/R Advance Setting Margins New margin settings remain until changed again. 1. Move the Mode Selector to Type. The typing scale appears on the display. 2. Move the cursor to the desired left margin setting on the scale using the Spacebar and/or Back Space key. You can also use Code + and Code Press Margin. The unit beeps and an L appears on the display. 4. Move the cursor to the desired right margin setting on the typing scale. 5. Press Code + Margin. The unit beeps and an R appears on the display. 6. You can change to Mem or Line Mode, if desired. IMPORTANT: If you change margins in Mem Mode, be sure to reformat the text before printing. (See Reformatting Text. ) Tabs Up to sixteen (16) tabs may be set. Tabs may be set outside margins. The tab settings remain until changed again. (If Auto Return is activated, tabs cannot be set beyond the right margin.) Move Cursor to Desired Tab Location Tab S Type Regular Tabs 1. Move the Mode Selector to Type. The typing scale appears on the display. 2. Position the cursor to the desired tab location using Code +, Code +, Spacebar, or Back Space. 3. Press Tab S. The symbol T appears on the typing scale, and a beep is heard. 4. You can then change mode, if desired. Using Regular Tabs Press Tab (Tab C). In Type Mode, the print hammer and cursor move to the tab setting. In Mem Mode, the print hammer does not move. The Tab Symbol ( ) appears on the display. In Line Mode, the cursor moves to the tab setting on the display, but no symbol appears. 2-2 Page Layout Smith Corona Corporation
3 Special Tabs Special tabs can set in Type Mode. You can easily set three special types of tabs. Decimal Tab Center Tab Flush Right Tab Use Flush Center Right Tabs Tabs 4.00 to Look Center Professional Column Headings and Information Tab Tab C Decimal Tabs Numbers automatically align by decimal point when using the Decimal Tab feature. 1. Move Mode Selector to Type Mode. 2. Position the print hammer to desired tab location using Code +, Code +, Spacebar, or Back Space. 3. Press Code + Spec Tabs (8) once. The symbol D T appears on the typing scale. A beep is heard. Position Print Hammer Code Type + 8 * ] Center Tab 1. Move Mode Selector to Type Mode. 2. Position the print hammer to desired tab location using Code +, Code +, Spacebar, or Back Space. 3. Press Code + Spec Tabs (8) twice. The symbol T C appears on the typing scale. A beep is heard. Type Position Print Hammer Code + 8 * ] Flush Right Tab 1. Move Mode Selector to Type Mode. 2. Position the print hammer to desired tab location using Code +, Code +, Spacebar, or Back Space. 3. Press Code + Spec Tabs (8) three times. The symbol F T appears on the typing scale. A beep is heard. 4. 4 Using Special Tabs Decimal Tabs 1. Press Tab (Tab C) to move cursor to the Decimal Tab location. The display prompt identifies the type of tab and the location. For example: Decimal Type the numbers preceding the decimal point. The numbers appear on the display. Use Correct to correct errors. To cancel a Decimal Tab, press Return. 3. Type the decimal point. In Type and Line Modes, the number prints to this decimal point. In Mem Mode, the number is shown on the display preceded by the decimal tab symbol D T and will print in this format when the document is printed. 4. Type the numbers following the decimal point. Center and Flush Right Tabs 1. Press Tab (Tab C) to move the cursor to the tab location. The display prompt identifies the type of tab and the location. For example: Tab Type text. The text appears on the display preceded by the tab symbol T C or F T. Use Correct to correct errors. To cancel and exit Special Tabs press Tab (Tab C). 3. Press Return. The text will print in Type and Line Modes. In Mem Mode, a return ( ) symbol appears to indicate the end of tab aligned text. 4. Press Tab (Tab C) again to move to the next tab position. Changing Tabs You can change tabs already set for one format to another. Settings can be changed in Type Mode or you can change them for a specific document in Mem Mode when you recall the document. Changing a Regular Tab to a Special Tab 1. Select Type Mode. 2. Position print hammer on the Regular Tab to be changed. 3. Press Code + Spec. Tab (8). The tab will change to a Decimal Tab (DT), and the unit will beep once. 4. Press Code + Spec. Tab (8) again for a Centered Tab ( T C ), and press Code + Spec. Tab (8) a third time for a Flush Right Tab ( F T ). NOTE: This can also be done in Mem Mode when you are recalling a saved file (see Memory Mode ). 2-4 Page Layout Smith Corona Corporation
5 Changing a Special Tab to a Regular Tab 1. Select Type Mode. 2. Position print hammer on the Special Tab to be changed. 3. Press Tab S. The tab will change to a Regular Tab, and the unit will beep once. NOTE: This can also be done in Mem Mode when you are recalling a saved file (see Memory Mode ). Changing All Tabs to One Special Tab 1. Select Type Mode. 2. Position the print hammer on left margin. 3. Press Code + Spec Tabs (8) until all tabs on the typing scale change to the tab desired. Changing All Special Tabs to Regular Tabs 1. Select Type Mode. 2. Position the print hammer on left margin. 3. Press Tab S. All Special Tabs are changed to Regular Tabs. Removing One Tab Setting 1. Select Type Mode. 2. Position the print hammer on that tab location by pressing Tab (Tab C). 3. Press Code + Tab C (Tab). Release immediately. The tab symbol disappears from the scale. One beep is heard. Clearing All Tab Settings In Type Mode, press and hold Code + Tab C (Tab) until 2 beeps are heard. If you are positioned at a tab stop you will hear 3 beeps. All tab symbols disappear from the scale. The display prompts: All Tabs Clear Smith Corona Corporation Page Layout 2-5
6 Settings The Settings feature allows you to set End of Page warning, Pitch, Line Spacing, Impression Control, and the number of lines to be displayed in Mem Mode. The settings remain until changed. Note that the current settings are always shown on the display in Type and Line Modes. End of Page Warning, Pitch, Line Spacing and Impression Control are all set using the display and the setting indicators printed on the unit case above it. They can be set and/or changed in any mode using the instructions below. IMPORTANT: If you change any of these settings in Mem Mode while you are creating a document, reformat the text before printing. End of Page Warning An End of Page Setting alerts you when you are approximately one inch from the bottom of the page in Type Mode and Line Mode by beeping 3 times. After you hear this warning, do not attempt to add additional lines of text. In Mem Mode, the unit will halt printing at approximately one inch from the bottom of the page for you to insert a new sheet of paper. End of Page can be set for 11 or 14 paper or can be turned off unless you are in Mem Mode. 1. Press Code + Settings (7) to activate Settings. The display prompts: Set End of Page 2. Press Spacebar until the correct setting (11, 14 or OFF) appears on the display. OFF is not available in Mem Mode. 3. Press Return to select a setting and move to the next setting option. 4. Press Code + Settings (7) to deactivate Settings. 5. Automatically insert paper by pressing Code + Shift (Paper In). IMPORTANT: Do not use the platen knob to adjust the paper while using the End of Page feature. If you do, the line count will be inaccurate. Use the Automatic Paper Insert feature to insert paper. To adjust the typing position, use Code +, Code +, or Return. The line counter is reset each time you use Automatic Paper Insert. 2-6 Page Layout Smith Corona Corporation
7 Pitch Your typewriter has been designed with triple pitch capabilities: 10 characters per inch (Pica), 12 characters per inch (Elite), and 15 characters per inch (Micro). When pitch is changed, margins and tabs may need to be adjusted because the number of characters per inch varies depending on pitch. Use the scale below for comparable positions PICA ELITE MICRO 1. Press Code + Settings (7) to activate Settings (if not already activated). 2. Press Return until the display prompts: Set Pitch 3. Press Spacebar until the selection you want is displayed. 4. Press Return to select a setting and move to the next setting option, or press Code + Settings (7) to deactivate Settings. 5. Change printwheels if you select another pitch. NOTE: You can select an alternative pitch at any time while typing text. If you change pitch in Mem Mode, you may wish to enter a Stop Code so that printing halts to allow you to insert another printwheel. In Type Mode, correction memory is erased when you change pitch. 8 Line Spacing You can select single line spacing, line spacing, or double line spacing. 1. Press Code + Settings (7) to activate Settings (if not already activated). 2. Press Return until the display prompts: Set Line Spacing 3. Press Spacebar until the setting you want is displayed. 4. Press Return to select a setting and move to the next setting option, or press Code + Settings (7) to deactivate Settings. NOTE: If you change line spacing in Mem Mode, the entire document prints in the new setting. Impression Control Impression Control adjusts the force used by the print hammer to strike the typing paper. You can select Light, Medium, or Heavy print impression. It is recommended that you select Heavy impression when typing carbons or using a Script or Orator printwheel. For normal typing, use medium impression. 1. Press Code + Settings (7) to activate Settings (if not already activated). 2. Press Return until the display prompts: Set Impression 3. Press Spacebar until the setting you want is displayed. 4. Press Return to move to the next setting option, or press Code + Settings (7) to deactivate Settings. NOTE: Standard bond paper stock is recommended for best quality. Copier paper, erasable bonds and very heavy textured bond papers do not print well with Correctable Film Ribbon. For these paper types, we recommend High Density Correctable Film or Multi-Strike Ribbons. If typing stencils, use those specifically designed for daisywheel printers. 2-8 Page Layout Smith Corona Corporation
9 Number of Lines When you are in Mem Mode, you can view either one or two lines of text. If you elect to view one line of text at a time, the file name and the cursor position will appear on the top line of the display, and the text on the second line. End of Page Pitch Line Impression Keyboard File: Document 35 One line of text is on the display If you elect to view two lines of text at one time, the your text will be on both lines of the display. End of Page Pitch Line Impression Keyboard Two lines of text are on this display. To change back to one line, access Settings. 1. Press Code + Settings (7) to activate Settings (if not already activated). 2. Press Return until the display prompts: Set Number of Lines to Display in Memory. 3. Press Spacebar to change the setting. 4. Press Return to select a setting and move to the next option, or press Code + Settings (7) to deactivate settings. Smith Corona Corporation Page Layout 2-9
