July 2014 Dear Reader, Welcome to the latest edition of the AEA Summary of Traffic & Airline Results or S.T.A.R. S.T.A.R. is an unrivalled source for AEA member airlines traffic and yield data and therefore an essential source for researchers, analysts and planners. You will find a wealth of passenger and cargo data, by airline and by region. At the aggregate AEA level, yield and revenue information is also presented. Key figures are shown in historical time series. A further section of the report shows aircraft utilisation data, by type and by airline. Regular users will note that the yield time series data, corrected for exchange rate adjustments and inflation, has been re-based from this edition and is now using the year 2000 as base year, presenting a continuous time series of thirteen years. To assist with interpreting the figures, we have added detailed notes on data collection techniques, reporting methodologies and data coverage. These can be found under the headings General Notes and Definitions and Explanatory Notes. Data is also available in spreadsheet format, containing a longer time series dated back from The Excel spreadsheet can be purchased from the AEA website For more information, please contact us at aeasec@aea.be

Summary Page The summary page provides an at a glance review of the geographical region with some key indicators.the page starts at the top with a definition of the geographical region. Below, current year s Key Figures are displayed with, at the top, the number of carriers reporting and the percentage share the region constitutes in Total Scheduled RPKs, FTKs and Revenues. For the calculated regions, a pie chart displaying the composition of the route area is shown, as well as its weight in terms of AEA services. 113

AEA Historic Overview The AEA Historic Overview page gives a longer time-series of AEA figures for each region as early as 1975 for some regions. For each year, the number of carriers reporting the region is shown. Please bear this figure in mind when calculating growth rates from one year to another as changing participation to the annual data collection may have a major impact. The following traffic items are shown: Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs) Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs) Passenger Load Factor (PLF) Number of Passengers transported Cargo (Freight + Mail) Tonne Kilometres on All Services Revenue Tonne Kilometres (RTKs) on All Services Available Tonne Kilometres (ATKs) on All Services Overall Load Factor (LF) Passenger Traffic The Passenger Traffic page is the first of three pages showing detailed traffic statistics by carrier for current year. The first column indicates for each listed carrier the relative weight of the passenger traffic for this region in its Total Scheduled passenger traffic, measured in RPKs (for the regions Total Scheduled, Non-Scheduled Traffic and Systemwide, this measure is related to the Systemwide figure). The following traffic items are shown: Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs) Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs) Passenger Load Factor (PLF) Number of Passengers Transported % Share Economy Class Passengers In addition to the absolute figures, growth rates adjusted for constant memebership versus previous year s figures are also included. 114

Cargo Traffic The Cargo Traffic page focuses on the cargo traffic performed by each carrier on all services (passenger and all-cargo) in current year. The relative weight of the region for each carrier is calculated in function of Total Scheduled (or Systemwide) Freight Tonne Kilometres on All Services. The following traffic items are included on this page: Freight Tonne Kilometres (Freight TKms) Freight Tonnes Cargo (Freight + Mail) Tonne Kilometres (Cargo TKms) Cargo (Freight + Mail) Tonnes In addition to the absolute figures, growth rates adjusted for constant memebership versus previous year s figures are also included. Total Passenger & Cargo Total traffic for each carrier in current year is covered in the Total Passenger & Cargo page. The relative weight of the region for each carrier is calculated in function of Total Scheduled (or Systemwide) Revenue Tonne Kilometres on All Services. Next to the traffic items Revenue Tonne Kilometres (RTKs) Available Tonne Kilometres (ATKs) Overall Load Factor (LF), the operational items Number of Revenue Kilometres flown (KMS) Number of Revenue Hours flown (HRS) Number of Revenue Landings (LND) are displayed for all services (passenger and cargo). In addition to the absolute figures, growth rates adjusted for constant membership versus previous year s figures are also included, except for the operational data items. 115

Yield Data The Yield page is divided into two separate blocks of data. The first block shows the Passenger, Freight, Cargo and Total Revenues in current US dollars for all AEA carriers for a time period of ten years. The second block of data shows three types of yields current, constant and real for the same time period, covering Passenger, Freight, Cargo and Total yields. See Definition of listed data items, Revenue Items below for more about current, constant and real yield calculation. In both blocks, the number of carriers reporting revenues is also displayed; important when looking at growth rates from one year to another (see above). Systemwide Fleet Statistics In addition to the previous kind of pages, the Systemwide chapter has an extra section covering the Systemwide Fleet Statistics for AEA carriers. This section is divided into three parts: Passenger Aircraft Wide-Body Passenger Aircraft Narrow-Body Freighter Aircraft Wide- & Narrow-Body For each aircraft type in the AEA fleet the following items are displayed: Aircraft Name Aircraft Code (A/C code) and its Category (= number of Jet (J) or Turboprop (T) engines) Standard Minimum and Maximum Seating AEA carriers operating the Aircraft Type Yearly Average Number of Aircraft in service Revenue Hours per Aircraft Average Stage Distance 116

Definition of Listed Data Items Traffic Items Reporting coverage: As of 2001 data, all operational and traffic items in this data collection are reported by the operating carrier, including those performed as code-shared, franchised, pooled, blocked-off charter, blocked-space arrangements, joint services and leased aircraft services. In this context the term operating carrier refers to the carrier whose flight number is being used for air traffic control purposes (according to new ICAO definition). Note that data for year 2000 and earlier, before the implementation of the new ICAO definitions, was collected on the following basis: The submitting carrier reports all services offered under the flight number, and at the risk of, their company. With regard to codeshared, franchised, pooled, blocked-off charter, blocked space arrangements, joint services and leased aircraft services, each carrier reports its share of traffic. Scheduled Services: Are defined as Scheduled services : Flights scheduled and performed for remuneration according to a published timetable, or so regular or frequent as to constitute a recognisably systematic series, which are open to direct booking by members of the public. Extra flights occasioned by overflow traffic from scheduled flights and preparatory revenue flights on planned air services are also considered to be scheduled services. This definition includes, inter alia: part charters, blocked space purchased for charter traffic, inaugural flights, extra sections, special flights operated on rare occasions, e.g. special scheduled service to an annual trade fair. Are defined as Non-Scheduled Services : charter flights ( inclusive tours ) and special flights performed for remuneration on an irregular basis, including empty flights related thereto and ad-hoc blocked-off charters, other than those reported under scheduled services. Revenue Passenger: Passengers for whose transportation an air carrier receives commercial remuneration. a) This definition includes according to the new ICAO definition, for example, (i) passengers travelling under publicly available promotional offers (for example two-for-one ) or loyalty programmes (for example redemption of frequent flyer points); (ii) passengers travelling as compensation for denied boarding; (iii) passengers travelling at corporate discounts; (iv) passengers travelling on preferential fares (government, seamen, military, youth, student, etc); b) This definition excludes according to the new ICAO definition, for example, (i) persons travelling free; (ii) persons travelling at a fare or discount available only to employees of air carriers or their agents or only for travel on the business of the carriers; (iii) infants who do not occupy a seat. Note that data for year 2000 and earlier, before the implementation of the new ICAO definitions, was collected on the following basis: All passengers counted on a point-to-point basis, as carried at 25% or more of the normal applicable fare for the journey. 117

Percentage Share Economy Class Passengers (% Econ): The percentage of total revenue passengers carried in the economy class compartment of the aircraft. The remainder share of total revenue passengers (100 - % Econ) is carried in the first or business class compartment of the aircraft. The passenger split shown is therefore not based on the fare paid, but on the seat occupancy in the aircraft. Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs): The product of the total number of revenue passengers on all routes under consideration and the corresponding stage distances. Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs): The product of the total number of seats offered on all stages of the routes under consideration and the corresponding stage distances. The calculation of the aircraft seating capacities is the one applied internally by the reporting airline, but only the number of seats actually available for sale is taken into consideration. Passenger Load Factor (PLF): The percentage of seating capacity which is actually sold and utilised. Computed by dividing Revenue Passenger Kilometres by Available Seat Kilometres on passenger services. Revenue Freight Tonnes: All air freight counted on a point-to-point basis (in metric tonnes) covered by air waybills for which any tariff charge was made. The weight of containers is treated as revenue freight when travelling on a commercial air waybill. Freight carried on Trucking Services is not included. Revenue Freight Tonne Kilometres (FTKs): The product of the revenue tonnes of air freight on all stages of the routes under consideration and the corresponding stage distances. Revenue Cargo Tonnes: The sum of all air freight counted on a point-to-point basis (in metric tonnes) covered by air waybills for which any tariff charge was made (= Revenue Freight Tonnes, see above) and all air mail carried on a point-to-point basis (in metric tonnes) including letters, printed matter, parcel and troop mail for which revenue was received. Revenue Cargo Tonne Kilometres (CTKs): The sum of the revenue tonnes of air freight and air mail on all stages of the routes under consideration multiplied by the corresponding stage distances. Revenue Tonne Kilometres (RTKs): One tonne of revenue traffic transported one kilometre. RTKs are the product of the total revenue traffic (passenger, freight and mail) in metric tonnes on all stages of the routes under consideration and the corresponding stage distances. Passenger Tonne Kilometres is calculated according to the standard weights used internally by each airline. If no such standard exists, the IATA standard of 100 kgs average weight, including free and excess baggage is used. 118

Available Tonne Kilometres (ATKs): The product of the total number of metric tonnes available for the transportation of passengers, freight and mail on all stages of the routes under consideration and the corresponding stage distances. Overall Load Factor (LF): The percentage of total capacity available for passengers, freight and mail which is actually sold and utilised. Computed by dividing Revenue Tonne Kilometres (RTKs) actually flown by Available Tonne Kilometres (ATKs). Distances: Airport-to-airport great circle distances are used throughout. Number of Revenue Landings: The total number of aircraft landings including operational/fuel stops in scheduled revenue services and extra sections. Revenue Aircraft Kilometres: The product of the number of revenue flights and the corresponding stage distances. Revenue Aircraft Hours: The total number of revenue hours flown block-to-block. Block-to-block time is defined as the total number of hours (and minutes) measured from the time the aircraft moves from the loading point until it stops at the unloading point. Average Stage Distance: The Revenue Aircraft Kilometres divided by the Number of Revenue Landings. Average Number of Flights/day: The number of Revenue Landings divided by 365. Average Number of Seats: The Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs) divided by the number of Revenue Aircraft Kilometres. Passenger Services: Services which are predominantly aimed at transporting passengers. Any freight and/or mail is usually carried in belly-hold. All-Cargo Services: Services which are aimed at transporting cargo (freight and/or mail) only. The whole capacity of the airplane is reserved for that purpose only. All Services: The sum of Passenger and All-Cargo Services 119

Revenue Items Passenger Revenues: GROSS revenues, being revenues before any deduction for COMMISSIONS [interline rate, credit card commisiion, front-end ( usual ) commission, back-end ( kick-back ) commission] earned from the transportation of the revenue passenger traffic reported including excess baggage and excluding (1) taxes on sale of passenger transportation, (2) revenue arising from persons not regarded as a revenue passenger (see definition of a revenue passenger above); (3) capacity equalisation payments arising from pooled services and from the sale of blocked space to other carriers on an aircraft operated by the reporting carrier; (4) no-show and cancellation fees, (5) revenues from the sale of food, drinks and in-flight entertainment and ground transportation not included in the ticket price; (6) royalties earned from franchises. From the 2006 Ed. ALL surcharges (fuel, security ) are also included (2004 data onwards). Freight Revenues: GROSS revenues earned from the transportation of the revenue air freight traffic reported, including express revenues and revenue from the carriage of diplomatic bags. It excludes (1) revenue from airline staff personnel consignments at reduced rates, (2) excess baggage; (3) rentals received for sale of capacity on joint freighter services, (4) revenue related to freight carried on trucking services ; (5) royalties earned from franchises. From the 2006 Ed. ALL surcharges (fuel, security ) are also included (2004 data onwards). Cargo Revenues: Freight revenues increased with any GROSS revenues earned from the transportation of the revenue mail traffic reported. Total Revenue: The sum of Passenger Revenues and Cargo Revenues. Passenger Yield: The average amount of passenger revenue received per Revenue Passenger Kilometre (RPK). Freight Yield: The average amount of freight revenue received per Freight Tonne Kilometre (FTK). Cargo Yield: The average amount of cargo (freight and mail) revenue received per Cargo Tonne Kilometre (CTK). Total Yield: The average amount of total (passenger, freight and mail) revenue received per Revenue Tonne Kilometre (RTK). 120

Current Constant Real Yields: - Current Yields: Yields without any exchange rate or inflation adjustments. - Constant Yields: Yields adjusted for exchange rate fluctuations versus the US dollar. The exchange rate effect is extracted from the revenues of selected carriers, using OECD Exchange Rates, fixing as base year the latest reporting year (2011). These constant revenues are then aggregated and used to calculate a general index that is then applied to original AEA Totals. The reason for using only a basket of carriers to calculate the general index lies in the fact that not all AEA carriers belong to OECD member countries, and that some countries suffer exchange rate flucturations too extreme to be included in the calculation. - Real Yields: Yields adjusted for exchange rate fluctuations and inflation. The constant revenues (see above) are deflated (base year 1991), based on OECD Consumer Price Indices for the same basket of countries and are then aggregated and used to calculate a general index that is then applied to original AEA Totals. Fleet Items Passenger Aircraft: An aircraft that carries any person other than a crew member, an operator s employee in an official capacity, an authorised representative of an appropriate national authority or a person accompanying a consignment or other cargo. Freighter Aircraft: Any aircraft, other than a passenger aircraft, which is carrying goods or property. Wide-Body Aircraft: A large transport aircraft with internal cabin width sufficient for normal passenger seating to be divided into three axial groups by two aisles (in practice this means not less than 4.72 metres). Narrow-Body Aircraft: An aircraft having only one aisle in the cabin with passenger seating divided into two axial groups. Seating: The minimum and maximum seating capacity of an aircraft type, based on different class configurations. The standard seating capacity provided by the aircraft manufacturers are shown. Number of Aircraft: The average number of aircraft for the year, calculated on a days-in-service basis. Aircraft are considered part of the fleet from the date of the first, to the date of the last revenue service, except: a) for days out of service due to major accidents or conversions; b) for days when an aircraft is in the possession of others; 121

c) when the aircraft is not available because of government action such as grounding by government regulatory agencies. At all other times, for example during maintenance and overhaul, aircraft are considered as part of the fleet. Data covers aircraft normally considered part of the fleet (see above) and used on the carrier s own operations. In other words, aircraft on long-term and medium-term finance leases are included, while aircraft on operating leases probably are not, unless the period of lease is a substantial one, accounting for more than half an aircraft/year. Aircraft leased to third-party carriers are also included if such leases are short-term; excluded if the owner does not have use of the aircraft for more than half the year. Revenue Hours per Aircraft: The total number of revenue hours flown block-to-block. Block-to-block time is defined as the total number of hours (and minutes) measured from the time the aircraft moves from the loading point until it stops at the unloading point. Average Stage Distance: The Revenue Aircraft Kilometres divided by the Number of Revenue Landings. 122
