3 W HAT M AJOR S HOULD I C HOOSE? The CIS department offers several majors dealing with computer related areas but in different ways. The following table points out the basic differences between Computer Science (CS), Computational Science, and Computer Information Technology (CIT) and it should help in deciding which major to pursue. Computer Science Computational Science Computer Information Technology Emphasis Study, design, and construction of efficient computing systems. Computer science applied to a specific professional discipline. Configuration, integration, and application of information technology (IT). Functions Building software and hardware. Integrating computing solutions Using software and hardware. Skills Workplace Degree Comprehensive theoretical foundations with practical applications through laboratories. Software or hardware development and research jobs in businesses, industry, education and IT. Students obtain an Associate of Science (AS) in CS after completing course work equivalent to two years of study. The Bachelor of Science (BS) in CS is obtained by the fourth year. BS CS graduates can, in two more years, complete a Master of Science (MS) in CS or a MS in Interdisciplinary Studies (MSIS) in CS. in a specialization field. Skills of two different disciplines, one in computer science and the other in a second academic major. Specialized computer science jobs in specialized niches provided by the second major Students obtain an Associate of Science (AS) in CS after completing course work equivalent to two years of study. The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Computational Science (CMS) is obtained by the fourth year. BS CMS graduates can, in two more years, complete a Master of Science (MS) in CS or a MS in Interdisciplinary Studies (MSIS) in CS. Practical focus with essential theoretic aspects introduced through laboratories. IT jobs in businesses, industry, education, government, or anyplace where computers are used. Majors can obtain a Certificate Level-1 (CL1) in IT or in Computer Web Development (CWD) after completing course work equivalent to one year of study. An Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Computer Information Systems (CIS) or in CWD is obtained by the second year. The Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) in CIS Technology () is completed by the fourth year. BAT graduates can complete, in two more years, a MS in Interdisciplinary Studies (MSIS) in CS. The following analogy may be of further help in distinguishing between CS and CIT. The engineer in charge of designing and building a plane is different from the pilot who flies it. The pilot must know about the functionalities of the plane and so does the engineer in order to be successful in their jobs. Similarly, CS majors design and build the software while CIT majors are the ones who set it up and use it. C LUBS The CIS Department has two academic clubs that students can join in order to broaden their experience and connect with colleagues: Academic Computing Machinery (ACM) Brownsville Unix User Group (BUUG) Computer and Information Sciences Department Page 2

4 T HE P ATHWAY T O A D EGREE IN C OMPUTING F IELDS Associate of Science Computer Science Bachelor or Science Computer Science Master of Science Computer Science CL1 CIT CL1 CWD AAS CIS AAS CWD Bachelor of Science Computational Science Bachelor of Applied Technology Computer Information Systems Master of Science Interdisciplinary Studies Computer Sciences 1 st Year 2 nd Year 3 rd Year The entire pathway to a bachelor degree in computing fields is shown in the figure above. It is important for students to contact an advisor in order to make informed decisions. COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY Students interested in a bachelor degree in Computer Information Systems Technology start with a Certificate Level-1 (CL1) in Computer Information Technology (IT) or a CL1 in Computer Web Development (CWD). The CL1 is designed to be completed in one year. Once the certificate degree is earned within one year, students may continue with an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Computer Information Systems (CIS) or an AAS in CWD. The CL1 credits are transferred to the AAS; therefore, completing the AAS would require only one additional year after the CL1. Notice that CL1 CWD transfers to AAS CIS; however, CL1 CIT may not transfer to AAS CWD. 4 th Year 5 th Year 6 th Year Once the associate s degree is earned within two years, students may continue with a Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) in Computer Information Systems Technology (). The credits from the associate s degree are transferred to the BAT ; therefore, completing the BAT would require only two additional years. COMPUTER SCIENCE AND COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE Students interested in a Computer Science (CS) or Computational Science (CMS) bachelor degree start with an Associate of Science (AS) in Computer Science (CS). Once the AS is earned within two years, students may continue with either a Bachelor of Science (BS) in CS or a BS in CMS. Earning a BS degree is expected by the fourth year of study. BS graduates may continue a Master of Science (MS) in CS or Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (MSIS) in CS which typically requires two years of study. E MPLOYMENT AND S ALARY Computing degrees are in high demand and expected to stay this way. Salaries in the field depend on several factors such as degree, certifications, and experience. The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) estimated recently around 265,030 employees in computer and information science occupations in Texas [TWC. (n.d.). Wage Information Network. Retrieved August 10, 2010, from The same report estimates that the entry, median, mean, and expected wages in Texas are respectively $43,104, $72,688, $75,695, and $91,990. The highest expected wage in the field is $135,603 for computer scientists in research while the lowest expected wage in the field is $89,889 for computer support specialists, according to the report.
