1 Introduction 1 Introduction Hello everybody, this is Sabrina and Bensh alias Benjamin. We want to tell you some facts about our stay in Budapest in summer semester 2009 at the Budapest Tech. We hope to raise your interest into the pearl at the Danube, the wonderful city of Budapest! In the following we are going to tell you about our particular experiences concerning our studies, the Erasmus programme and the city. We hope you enjoy our information and maybe you ll be the next to enter this world of impressions... Best, Sabrina and Bensh 2
2 Studying in Budapest 2 Studying in Budapest My name is Bensh Tang, I m 24 years old and I m studying electrical engineering at the Applied Scince in Hamburg. I never really left my home town that s why I decided to study one semester abroad. After a short time of research I decided to do an exchange semester in Budapest. I started to look for some information and therefor contacted Mrs. Dudás who gave me all the useful information. Mrs. Dudás is a very kind person, who helped to solve any problem while the stay in Budapest. I m studying in the 7th semester in Hamburg and therefor I needed to find courses which are comparable. When I arrived in Budapest this problem was not solved yet, so I used the first day to find my courses. In the end I found 3 projects. 2 of them were in the laboratory of Mr. Kucsera. The first project was about a mobile robot. The lab has a few mobile robots. These mobile robots are controlled by Phoenix contact PLCs. The robots are designed by the students. The students get different tasks, which have to be solved. The main task for the mobile robot was to drive around an exhibition without hitting someone and something. The second project was about a machine in the lab. The machine is also controlled by a PLC, but this PLC is from the company Schneider. The main task in this project was to make the machine work and to create a useful interface between the human and the machine. For these two projects, I did three presentations during the semester. At the end of the semester I wrote a report for each project. The work for these two projects was different from what I expected as a university work. I would prefer these two works as a project in an internship. Most of the work was new, so nobody in the lab did it before and can help me. Trying and asking the different companies was one of my works. Next to these two projects, the lab offers a lot of other projects. 3
2 Studying in Budapest One project dealt with a race. The students had to create a go-kart. The machine of the go cart was 4 hand drilled. Another project dealt with a competition in Germany. The students got a package with different things. They had to create a boat out of these things and make the boat solving different problems, like pick up an object and bring it to another place. The 3rd project dealt with software instead of hardware. At the beginning I created a software in cooperation with Mr. Schuster. At the end I used this software to learn about the behaviour of a non linear pendulum and how to solve this problem. This project was very good, because I was really free in the project. If there were any interesting problems, it was possible to discuss the problems with Mr. Schuster. He has very good knowledge for nearly every problem. All three projects were very good. Although both teachers were very busy, they took their time to help, if it was necessary. I made a few new experiences in this Erasmus semester. The most important one is that the Hungarian teachers are very flexible. The project can be changed, until it is interesting for the student and the home university. My name is Sabrina Mändle, I m 24 years old and I m studying textile technology in the 3 rd semester (Master) at Reutlingen University. I ve been already abroad twice, the first time in Canet de Mar and the second time in Valencia. Travelling became some kind of addiction to me, so I decided to take my chance and do it one more time. As I ve already been studying and doing an intership abroad I decided to try something new in a totally new country with a unknown language. Then there was Budapest... My main task in Budapest was to do a project work at the Innovatext Institute. Therefor I spent 4 days a week at the institute to do a literature research on a totally new topic in textile technology. Alongside I visited the lessons of product and garment design on Fridays as well as the Hungarian classes on Thusdays at the university. If I had any question concerning my studies Mrs Kokas and Anna Mihalyffy were kindly helping me. The work at the institute was really interesting. As I was the first student it was also very exiting for the people there. As the topic, which is still confidential, was very new there existed almost no literature. So I had to browse all the research homepages and databases in the internet. Finally I found a lot of information, not only for the topic but also for myself. I really learned a lot during this work and I hope I can use it later in my professional life. 4
2 Studying in Budapest The people at the institute were very kind. They helped me whenever I had a question. Not only concerning the project but also concerning my problems with the language. Every day we had lunch together and they supported me in learning Hungarian the same way I helped them to improve their English. They even took me out for leisure time activitites, e.g. once we went to Kiskunhalas to visit the Levi s factory and the Halas csipke museum as well as we went to a water polo game. As I m going to be a textile engineer my studies are very technical. So I was really happy to be able to choose a design course at the university. The lessons of product and garment design were held by Mrs. Kisfaludy. My topic was Budapest as an inspiration source, I had to deal with the architecture of the city and convert my impressions into textile desings. As I had no restrictions this was a lot of fun. I also had the possibility to use the hand flatknitting machines at the university therefor I was able to make some real patterns. Mr Zoles was always in the laboratory to teach me a lot about flat knitting. The Hungarian lessons with Mrs Bayerné Mérei were quite good. Bensh and me visited them togehter. As Hungarian is a very complicated language we already knew that we won t be able to speak fluently after only one semester, but our teacher was very flexible, so we could decide which topics and which phrases we wanted to learn. The only disadvantage was the time as it started at 8 in the morning... 5
3 Living in Budapest - day 3 Living in Budapest - day First of all you have to separate the daylife and the nightlife, even though for both it s worth to be in Budapest! The city offers many tourist sights. Even if we are Erasmus students, we are some kind of tourists. If you stay for a few months, you don t need a tour guide to get to know the sights and the most beautiful places in Budapest. You will find them on your own by the time! You can find all the sights in a tourist guide, but we have some places to recommend. Do not miss the basilica, the hero s square and the Margit island. If you go to the hero s square, you have to take the metro line 1, which is the oldest metro line in the centre of Europe. If you take the metro you feel like being in a museum instead of being in a working metro. Everybody should try it at least once! If you want to have a great view over the city you have to go to the Gellert hill with the Citadella on top of it. You will have a great view to the Pest side by day, but the view at night is amazing and incredible. Do not miss it! There are many interesting museums, e.g. directly at the hero s square. If you are interested in photography you have to go to the house of photography in the Nagymezö ut 20. The Ludwig museum of modern art is located next to the new theater. Not only the exhibitions but also the houses themselfes are worth to be seen. Usually there are student discounts on the tickets. 6
3 Living in Budapest - day If you live in the town, you need different daily stuff, like food and cosmetic. When we were in Hungary in 2009 they did not have the Euro yet. The national currency, the Hungarian Forint, was really instable. The rate changed between 310HUF to 270HUF for 1. When the rate was 310HUF all the things seems to be really cheap, but with the rate of 270HUF it wasn t cheap anymore compared to Germany. If you want to have food with international brands you have to pay for it. For example brands like Kinder or Nestlé. The products of these brands are expensive like in Germany and sometimes even more. If you don t care about the brand, you can buy the national brands. The advantage is definitely the price, but you can t read the descriptions, because they used to be in the Eastern Europe languages. Budapest has a lot of small ABC shops, which sell daily things. These shops are opened 24/7. Even on holidays they open. The prices in these shops are higher than in normal shops. Besides the ABC shops you have Match, Spar and Interspar supermarkets. These supermarkets are cheaper than the ABC shops. You can also get your daily stuff there. Normally the Match supermarkets have a very good rate if you want to change your Euro money in HUF. If you buy cheap things, you can pay with Euros. The change will be in HUF. Next to these supermarkets you will find Tesco. Tesco is also a 24/7 supermarket, but this supermarket is cheaper compared to the other supermarkets. The problem with this supermarket is that you will not find any Tesco in the city centre. According to the rate it is worth to go shopping in Budapest. The cloths were cheap compared to Germany when the rate was up to 310HUF. When the rate fell to 270HUF all the cloths became expensive. If you like to go shopping it is worth to check the Vaci utca and all the malls. The most modern and interesting mall is the arena plaza near the keleti train station. In our Erasmus term, this mall had special offers. One Wednesday a month half of the shops in the mall gave 20% discount. To get this discount you have to check the homepage of the mall and get the coupons. If you like flew markets or second hand shopping you are also well served in Budapest. There s one very huge flew market, the Ecseri market, but usually people don t recommend to go there, because it s very touristical and therfor expensive. So if you want to go to a real one you should e.g. visit the flew market close to the metro station Stadionok (red line). Another interesting market is the chinese market. You can reach it with the tram 28 which leaves at the Blaha Lujza tér. This market has a real special ambient. You can find any kind garment, shoes, jewelry and toys there. But take care of your stuff! 7
3 Living in Budapest - day There are quite a lot second hand shops in Budapest. Most of them are the so-called Angol Használtruha s whose clothes are from England. There are also usual ones which are called Garderobe, Ruhagaléria and Humana. If you come to Budapest and you never cooked before, don t be afraid to starve. The city centre of Budapest possesses a lot of fast food restaurants. Budapest has a ring street. Nearly at each tram station on this ring street, you will find a Mc Donald s, Burger King and a Subway. But if you re afraid of these common fast food brands, you can get some pizza at Pizza Hut, some Chinese food from the microwave or some gyros sandwiches. Next to the fast food restaurants you will find some good restaurants in the city centre. The prices of the food at the restaurants are cheap compared to Germany. If you like to you can get a menu with a drink and a desert for 10. Most of the Hungarian people are really friendly and helpful. We didn t speak any Hungarian at the beginning, but most of the Hungarian spoke German or English. 8
4 Living in Budapest - night 4 Living in Budapest - night The nightlife in Budapest is amazing. There are two different types of nightlife, which are both worth to get to know. The first are the bars. You will find all the bars around the Oktogon on the Pest side. If you stay in Budapest longer you will find your own favourite bar. You should try the Szimpla and the Instant at least once. These are really famous and nice bars. You can find a lot of Hungarians and Erasmus students there. Both bars are really worth to visit it. If you have luck you can get a concert in the Instant for free or you find a live band at the Szimpla. Both bars have very good prices for the drinks. On Wednesdays and the weekends you will find a dance floor at the basement of the Instant. If you like to find a place to dance, you should go to the Morrisons. If you want to get to know other Erasmus students, you should go to the Morrisons 1 on Monday and to the Morrisons 2 on Thursdays. These are some unofficial Erasmus parties, because you will find a lot of Erasmus students there. At the beginning of the term most of the universities have their own welcome parties. You can use these opportunities to get to know students from other universities. We really don t know how many students Budapest has, but for me it seemed, that Budapest is a city with a lot of students. The Erasmus network is very active here. You can find a lot of students from everywhere in this city. We met different students from Spain, Portugal, Greece, Ireland, England, Germany, France, etc. If you are open minded you won t have any problems to get to know people from different countries. The BMF organised an Erasmus dinner at the beginning of the term. This event gives the students the opportunity to get to know the other students from the same university. Next to this event the BMF organised some other trips, for example the excursion to the parliament and an excursion to other cities in Hungary. If you like some exclusive parties, you also find it in Budapest. Most of the exclusive clubs are on the Buda side. These are e.g. Play, White Angel or Studios. These clubs have, compared to the bars and clubs on the Pest side, expensive admission fees and the drinks are much more expensive than the bars. According to the money it is not worth but according to the party it is worth to visit one of these clubs. Benshs favourite club is the Studios. This club has a capacity for more than 4000 people and there are more than 100 dancers, who do different shows. 9
4 Living in Budapest - night All of the exclusive clubs play house music. These clubs just open during the winter. During the summer the owners of these clubs open the beach clubs. You will find the beach clubs around the Danube. During the weekdays the admission is free. You will find the exclusive beach clubs on the Hajógyári Island, where also the Studios is. If you like some R n B music, you should visit the Rio on Thursdays. This beach club is also very good. Next to the Rio you have the Zöld Pardon. This beach club has a restaurant in it. If you are hungry, just go in and get a piece of pizza or a burger. You will find this clubs at the Petöfi bridge. If the night is not long enough for you to party, just visit the after club Coronita. This club opens at the weekend from 5 a.m.. But there are also many possibilities to go out at the Pest side, e.g. the Merlin, Trafo, Kupplung, Mono...as you can see: you won t get bored! 10
5 Travelling around Budapest 5 Travelling around Budapest If once you need to escape the city there are many possibilities. Not too far away along the Danube you can find the cities Szentendre, which you can reach by boat or train, Esztergom and Vac. In Gödöllö you can visit the Sissi castle. You can also go to the Balaton Lake, especially in summer it s very beautiful there. You can do almost every kind of water sports there or just relax. You can nearly reach every big city in Eastern Europe from Budapest in a few hours. If you like to travel you can go to Prague, Krakow, Zagreb, Bratislava or any other cities for a weekend. Budapest offers the students very cheap tickets to travel. Every student gets a 50% discount on the tickets by train. 11
6 Résumé 6 Résumé It is worth to do the Erasmus program in Budapest. The city is very nice with that special ambiente; we both fell in love with it during our stay. There are so many things to be discovered and so many places to be seen that you ll never be bored! It s a perfect possibility to practice your English and to open up yourself to a new culture and language. If you are still not convinced to go to Budapest, just watch the follow link: 12
