2 Graduate program Computer Science Innovative software systems are the driving force behind many exciting developments in society, industry and science. A thorough knowledge of computer science is necessary to design such systems, to make sure they function correctly, efficiently and securely, to analyze their properties, and to understand their possibilities and limitations. A degree in computer science from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) offers you an excellent starting point for a career as a computer science engineer or researcher in this exciting and fast-moving field. Our educational programs are based on our research excellence in four areas: Algorithms and Visualization, Information Systems, Model-Driven Software Engineering, and Security and Embedded Networked Systems. We have strong ties with industry and with other departments within and outside TU/e, leading to a variety of master s and post-master s degree programs that offer ample opportunities to both application-oriented and theoretically-inclined students. Within the Computer Science graduate program the following programs are available: Master s degree programs Computer Science and Engineering Information Security Technology* Business Information Systems Embedded Systems (3TU) Honors programs EIT Service Design and Engineering* EIT Embedded Systems** * special master s degree track within Computer Science and Engineering ** special master s degree track within Embedded Systems PhD program Computer Science Master s degree programs Computer Science and Engineering This master s degree program gives a broad view of computer science from both a scientific and an engineering perspective and provides ample opportunities for specialization. The program offers four different streams: Data Science, Software Science, Systems Science and Web Science. Each stream has a core program of five courses, and a large list of stream electives from which you can choose. There is also ample room in the program to choose electives from outside your stream. The room for electives can be used for a program leading up to a (high-school) teaching degree. Information Security Technology * * This special master s degree track is formally a track of the Computer Science and Engineering master s degree program offered by the Kerckhoffs Institute, a collaboration between the computer science departments of TU/e and Radboud University of Nijmegen. The protection of electronic data against all kinds of threats, ranging from unauthorized access to malicious manipulation, is of ever-increasing importance. This program provides essential tools for secure communication and data protection, with subjects ranging from cryptographic ciphers to operating systems, and from tool-assisted protocol verification to laboratory attacks on networks. The program addresses the significant and increasing need for experts in security. You will get a broad theoretical and technical view taking into account organizational, legal, and ethical aspects. Business Information Systems Modern organizations such as banks, insurance companies, ministries, hospitals, travel companies and web stores are critically dependent on their information system: when it falters, all the other processes come to a standstill. This program unites the competencies of the computer scientist and the industrial engineer. Through a balanced selection of

I used Random Forest analysis and found ways to visualize the results, making it easier to draw conclusions. Everyone in my project group was enthusiastic, innovative and supportive, and I got to work with great people in my field. Education at TU/e is very different than in Russia. Deadlines are more firm here, and I had to get used to that. Professors are eager to help you with any problem you have. I was really surprised by the borrels you don t drink beer with your professor in Russia! I also enjoy the endless opportunities at the university campus, such as a huge library with a lot of study facilities. I d like to work in software development. Eindhoven, the technological center of the Netherlands, is a great opportunity for that, and a degree from one of the best Dutch universities is attractive for employers. computer science and industrial engineering courses, you get a solid foundation to be able to design and realize secure and reliable information systems. You can specialize in one of the three streams: business process intelligence, information management and logistics. Embedded Systems Embedded systems are found in numerous products, ranging from television sets, mobile phones and copiers to cars and medical devices. The interaction between software (computer science) and hardware (electrical engineering) in these products requires an integrated approach to the design process. This interaction demands a new type of engineer who can draw on knowledge of both software and hardware. The emphasis in this program is placed on the design of efficient and reliable embedded systems. The program consists of mandatory courses from both computer science and electrical engineering. A large number of electives allow you to shape the program to you own interests. This program is a 3TU master s degree program from the three leading universities of technology in the Netherlands. The final project of each master s degree program accounts for a quarter of the program and can be carried out in the department(s), possibly in collaboration with an industrial partner. 4 Honors program PhD PROGRAMS This challenging program, aimed at excellent students from one of our master s degree programs, provides the opportunity to participate in and contribute to the research being done at the department. The core of the program consists of two research projects, to be done in addition to the regular master s degree program you are enrolled in. EIT ICT Labs Master School * EIT Embedded Systems and EIT Service Design and Engineering * The two special master s degree tracks Embedded Systems and Service Design and Engineering are offered by TU/e and EIT ICT Labs Master School. EIT ICT Labs Master School offers an international two-year master s degree program on ICT Innovation, combining technical majors with a minor on Innovation and Entrepreneurship. You get fundamental knowledge and skills on a technical topic, and you learn how to drive your innovative ideas to the market. You will study at two top-notch universities in two different European countries. You learn about cultural and language differences from other students and professionals. After completing the program you will receive a double degree from both universities and the EIT ICT Labs certificate. The PhD program in Computer Science enables holders of a masters degree in computer science or a closely related topic to perform an in-depth study and research project leading up to becoming an independent researcher in computer science. The Eindhoven University of Technology is located in a hightech region in which computer science plays an extremely important role. The region has been named the smartest region in the world, partly thanks to the large number of PhD graduates working in the region. Computer science is at the core of research in companies such as Philips, ASML, NXP and also many small and medium enterprises that create technologies and applications for the future. Former PhD graduates from our university have also been hired later as (often part-time) professors to strengthen the link between university and industry research and to bring their industrial experience back into the university education and research. Service Design and Engineering: provides the technical competence and entrepreneurial and innovative skills needed for a successful business in service design and engineering.
5 I m helping companies stay in control of their documents Kritika Maurya Master s degree student, Business Information Systems Every company has to deal with thousands of paper documents. I help make sure this doesn t turn into a mess. For my master s thesis, I m working at a printing and document management company. We re researching how information system architecture can keep everything structured and well-organized. It s my dream project, because it combines two things I m passionate about: business and information technology. I chose to study at TU/e because of its strong ties with major technology companies in the region. After graduating, I hope to stay here. There s a great international community here that makes me feel at home, and I ve grown to appreciate the Dutch culture a lot. PDEng program Software Technology Following your master s graduation, you can continue on to the Software Technology (ST) PDEng program within the Computer Science graduate program. High-tech industry needs experienced technological designers able to design complex new products and processes. A master s degree can give you the requisite theoretical knowledge but it does not provide a lot of practical experience. A PDEng program gives you that practical experience, which boosts your market value for industry. You will have the status of a TU/e employee. That means you will receive a salary and have excellent secondary conditions of employment. You graduate with a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree. The Software Technology program begins with a 15-month series of short courses and workshops and short industrial design projects. This is followed by a major in-company design assignment of nine months. The development of software for advanced systems covers a wide range of different aspects. The Software Technology program devotes a lot of attention to the project-based design and development of software for resource-constrained, software-intensive systems such as real-time embedded systems. School for Technological Design, Stan Ackermans Institute. The institute represents the three universities of technology in the Netherlands and was established in mid-2006.
