The Olive and Olive Oil Museum of Pelion Current contents and resources Athina Argyropoulou
Mount Pelion A mountain at the southeastern part of Thessaly in central Greece, forming a peninsula in hook-shape between the Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea. The western part of mount Pelion is full with olive trees
Ano Gatzea winter Agios Georgios summertime among the famous 24 villages of Mount Pelion «Agios Georgios ~600 m altitude is divided into two villages : 1. Ano Gatzea for the winter (as there a lot of secondary houses named kalivia were built for the period of olive harvest that finally became the winter centre of the village) 2. Agios Georgios for the summertime
End of 19 th century The train line* Cultural and economic development of Pelion Lack of transport infrastructure. Only ways to travel were mule-tracks, footpaths and cobbled paths Usual mean of transport was the pack-animals In 1889 it was decided to construct a railway network to directly connect the city of Volos to the Mount Pelion One of the urgent needs for this network was the olive-crop production that needed to be transported fast and in a reliable way to the port Construction began in 1892 and in 1896 the first part of the line, Volos - Ano Lehonia had been delivered The rest, all the way up to Milies would have to wait for 1903 The chief engineer of the project was Evaristo De Chirico, father to the well known painter and sculptor Giorgio De Chirico, who was born in Volos. * 60cm gauge line, one of the narrowest in the world
20 th century A little train named Mountzouris The train was known as Mountzouris, common Greek nickname reserved for someone who turns things black, obvious choice in the days of steam The railway reduced the operational cost and made the transportation of products secure Pelion agriculture turned into a competitive market in Greece and abroad olives de Volos The post-war years, as the road network on Pelion was completed the train started to decline In 1951, the only settlements still dependent to the train were the Ano Gatzea and Pinakates The train was finally abolished by the dictatorship on 21st of June 1971, because it was considered uneconomical
Today The train line From Ano Lehonia to Milies Normally operates from spring till autumn (weekends) Every day from 15 th July 31 August During this period one cyclical trip is made in the mountainous part of the line, which is the only segment currently in operation. The running time is 1h 30m (including a 15m stop at the scenic station of Ano Gatzeae)
The Olive and Ano Gatzea Train Station
The Olive and Olive Oil Museum small museum on the theme of the olive about the olive and its oil, rural life and folklore occupies the ground floor of a traditional stone building, built in 1924 by Ioannis Bogiatzis at Ano Gatzea train station the first floor was the family s winter home the ground floor, known as the cellar was used for various agricultural activities, principally centred on the olive groves in the house, until 1991, lived Ioannis only daughter, Foula in 2007, the ground floor of the building was restored and converted into a museum. It is run by the N.G.O. Pelion Oros as a non-profit making enterprise.
The Olive and Olive Oil Museum Houses a collection of restored artefacts which were found in the building where olives were sorted and processed. These are displayed inside the building and outside in the grounds. There is an impressive olive barrel 2.2 m in diameter and 3 m high which was taken from inside the building and re-erected outside. Its reconstruction is the subject of a short film.
The Olive and Olive Oil Museum Inside the building there are two levels. One is the main museum and the other, which was once the oil storage depot with four built-in amphoras has been converted into an audio visual facility.
The Olive and Olive Oil Museum The main hall contains information on how olives were gathered, processed and prepared for market. The displays take you through the process of olive cultivation: ploughing the ground; caring for the trees by pruning and spraying, and harvesting, using long sticks to knock the fruit from the trees.
The Olive and Olive Oil Museum In the main hall you can see how olives were prepared for sale and cured in huge barrels. A barrel converted to a biblioteque
The Olive and Olive Oil Museum Thee are also other artefacts from the rural life of former times: different kinds weighing machines and bread-making equipment (from the wood-fired bakery that used to be immediately opposite the main museum). There is also a small collection of domestic appliances which were used in days gone by.
The Olive and Olive Oil Museum Importantly, the oil produced from olives it is also used to make soap and you can see how it is made. Soap construction is the subject of another short film
