5 What is so special about SafeLED IQ? SafeLED IQ offers possibilities that have never been seen before in airfield lighting. It is an advanced lamp fitting built in one solid, well-designed piece, including all the intelligence you could wish for. This all-in-one revolution gives you an AFL system that you will not have to worry about for many, many years. With SafeLED IQ you can centrally monitor and control your LED application without any further hardware, ensuring high availability, great power savings and superior cost-efficiency. How is SafeLED IQ more efficient? The power consumption is not drastically decreased when only changing from halogen to LED, since the large savings are at 6.6A (normally only 10% of the time): 13% savings when changing directly from halogen to LED. But by controlling light intensity through software at the light rather than at the CCR and the CCR constant at 2A, combining lamp Total functions and using software based segments for lamp control, savings your airport could save: 85% 55% in power consumption in an existing system. How is SafeLED IQ safer than other lamps? To gain valuable safety benefits, the most important thing is the system perspective. By installing a LED with system perspective, like SafeLED IQ, your airport can upgrade the safety level in the AFL application, and get large power savings, and without problems. When using other LED lamps, without a system perspective, the power savings are not large. The output intensity is mostly 3 10% and a lot of problems occur. Halogen lights are easy to put into a system, but when using a LED light without system perspective it is difficult to detect LED lamp failure, as required by ICAO Annex 14, through the CCR.

8 These incidents could have been prevented: Norway 23 October 2005, report nr: SL 20/2006 Incident: The aircrew was confused and tried to use the TWY for take-off. Reason: Intensity of RWY guard lights and TWY centre line lights were adjusted simultaneously. This resulted in RWY guard lights being subdued to low intensity during periods of good weather conditions during darkness, and their conspicuousness was partly lost. Solution: The airport was recommended to install separate light intensity control for RWY guard light. Sweden 19 September 2006, report nr: RL 2007:10 Incident: The aircraft s wheel hit a lamp during landing, and this wasn t noticed until next technical routine inspection. Reason: The side light fittings were not individually monitored, and there was no information given that the lamp was broken. Solution: The airport was recommended to have the RWY side lamps individually monitored and lit during check-ups in darkness and/or limited visibility. 8

9 Is your airport ICAO compliant? In order to be ICAO compliant and provide optimal safety by continuity of guidance, the allowable percentage of unserviceable lights shall not be permitted in such a way as to alter the basic pattern of the lighting system. Additionally, an unserviceable light shall not be permitted adjacent to another unserviceable light, except in a barrette or a crossbar where two adjacent unserviceable lights may be permitted. A traditional installation with CCRs cannot detect adjacent lamp failure. To be compliant, there is need for increased status awareness. 10 Technology that makes a difference LAMP CHARACTERISTICS Low protrusion SafeLED offers only 6,35 mm protrusion, which is very low. The problem with high protrusion is that the light fitting will suffer more impact from aircraft and vehicles driving over the lamp. High protrusion increases the risk of breaking light fittings and prisms. No negative slope In order to get the correct light output most light fittings are designed with a negative slope in front of the prism. The negative slope collects dust and particles, which negatively affects the light output, resulting in violation of ICAO recommendation. SafeLED has no negative slope and offers fully compliant light output, both right after production and equally after years of operation. Moulded and protected electronics If the inside of the light fitting is not protected, there is a risk for increased earth fault and malfunction. Exposed electronics decrease the component s life cycle and operational life span. SafeLED has moulded and protected electronics and the degree of protection is IP 68. parts for a lamp increases the risk for earthing fault and malfunction. SafeLED has integrated electronics and include fail open technology. Fit into all bases Safegate Group produce light fittings with the shortest overhaul depth in the industry. Valve for water tightness test Each inset SafeLED light fitting include a valve for water tightness test and each fitting is tested before delivery. We perform these tests to guarantee the best result and we recommend all our customers to test each light after maintenance. Quality and warranty All SafeLED light fittings are fully compliant with FAA, ICAO, STAC and MOS139, and individually checked before delivery. Everything we do before delivery is aiming at guaranteeing the best results while in operation. Integrated electronics and fail open technology For monitoring lights through the CCR, external and additional parts are needed. A number of different 10

11 SYSTEM CHARACTERISTICS Follows the halogen intensity curve LED does not follow the halogen intensity curve and the types cannot be combined. LED will consume additional electricity when not following the intensity curve. SafeLED IQ follows the same light intensity curve as the halogen lamp. Resistive load LED need capacitive load and halogen lights need resistive load. LED on resistive load causes serious problems such as pulsating light output and the CCR cannot handle the current. With SafeLED this is no problem, since it acts like resistive load. Intensity control at the light Today very often the intensity of the light fitting is controlled by the CCR. This results in large cable losses, high power consumption and increased CO 2 emissions. SafeLED IQ controls intensity at the light and can be run at a low fixed current. Segments defined by software Today segments are often defined by cables and CCRs. Hardware based segments are inefficient, costly and allow no room for flexibility. SafeLED IQ can define segments by software. Monitor status of each light The CCR can only give the percentage of lights in operation. By not knowing the status of the lights and if two adjacent lights are out, ICAO recommendations are violated. SafeLED IQ offers the possibility to monitor the status of each light separately. Addressable light control By not being able to address each LED light, no monitoring is possible without additional investments in equipment for each light. SafeLED IQ has an integrated function for monitoring each light. Combination of lamp functions Different lamp functions demand different light intensity. With traditional solutions different lamp functions cannot be combined, and extra CCR, cables and digging is needed. SafeLED IQ controls intensity at the light and different lamp functions can be combined.
