1 THE FRONTIER NEWS July 2014 Diocese of Peshawar Church of Pakistan Group photo of the Youth Summer Camp Youth Summer Camp, Donga Gali Individual Highlights Youth Desk of the Diocese of Peshawar, Church of Pakistan with the collaboration of Friends of Pakistan, Thailand organized a 'Youth Summer Camp' from 21st to 26th of July 2014, at the Diocesan Retreat and Training Centre, Donga Gali. Theme of the Camp was "Faith & Persecution". Around 80 youth members from all over the Province were among the participants and felt blessed with biblical teachings. The campers were taught and involved in Bible studies through various teaching sessions. The keynote speakers included Mr. Insar Gohar, the Youth Officer, Ms. Lubna Younas, a young Theologian, Whereas, Dr. Asher Imran from Friends of Pakistan, Thailand also led a session on 'Persecution in General'. Ms. Sarah Asghar, the President, Youth Council led an activity/sports based session to motivate the youth to join and empower their Church Youth Groups. The Revd. Shahzad Murad, Secretary Mission & Ministry in his session talked about history of the persecution in early Church. The Rt. Revd. Humphrey S. Peters, Bishop of Peshawar especially visited the Camp and spent two days with the youth for their encouragement. On the last evening of the Camp, a Talent night show was also arranged, and the youth entertained themselves and others at the camp through various skits, dramas, songs and poetry. 2 Interdenominational Evangelism Training Camp Free Bible Ministry Reaching the unreached! Summer Camp,Thandiyani Free bible distribution in progress Revd. Fayaz Channa while teaching July, 2014: The Diocese of Peshawar, Church of Pakistan organized an Interdenominational Evangelism Camp at St. Xavier Church, Thandiyani, which is 9600 feet above sea level, the highest peak/hill station of the area. Around participants from different Parishes of the Peshawar Diocese participated in the camp, including Priests, Deacons, Catechists, and Librarians. Whereas, young boys and girls from the Assembly of God Church/Ministry also participated in the programme. Thus, their biblical knowledge have been enhanced through various sessions, talks and group discussions. Revd. Shahzad Murad, Revd. Shahid Younas, Revd. Fayaz Channa The Revd. Fayaz Masih Channa, Priest Incharge Swat/Malakand, and Associate Priest All Saints Church, Peshawar was the main organizer, coordinator and the keynote speaker, whereas Mr. Amir William, a graduate from Lahore Seminary, the Revd. Shahid Younas, Priest Incharge St. Augustine Church, Kohat and Mr. Vicky Pervez, a local Evangelist were also among the speakers. The Revd. Rashid Nazir and the Revd. Shahzad Murad, Secretary Mission & Ministry Board Diocese of Peshawar also paid a visit to the camp. The most published book of all times is still The Holy Bible, however people living in far flung inaccessible areas of the world, including the Churches with limited resources are still unable to acquire the Holy Book in the numbers required. Therefore, keeping the need and situation in view the Free Bible Ministry of Sweden is trying its best to fulfill that need. Brother Alex, key person of his ministry has appointed Mr. Vicky Pervez, Youth member, Peshawar Diocese as their representative for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (KPK), Pakistan. MR. Vicky is actively reaching out to the Christian community and churches in the remote areas of Swat, Malakand, Dir, Tank, DIK, etc. thus reaching the unreached as per the Great Commission; And he said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.(mark 16:15) Page 2
3 Developing youth of the small Parishes Pics of various activities of youth from Terbella and Swabi Peshawar Diocese has its parishes at Swabi and Tarbella. Swabi is a small town with conservative Pushtoon culture, and the Christians of the area have totally adopted their local culture. Sometimes it is difficult to tell one from the other. The Christian community is trying its best to develop socially and economically by providing good education to their children. On the other hand, the town of Tarbella is famous for its hydro-electric mud Dam, most of the Christian community members are employees at the Dam, but doing the menial work. The youth groups of Swabi and Tarbella parishes, with the collaboration and cooperation of the Diocesan Youth Council, organized special youth seminars for their spiritual growth and social uplift, and motivated the youth to join and assist their parishes for the service of God. A team from the Diocesan Youth Council, under the leadership of Mr. Insar Gohar, the Diocesan Youth Officer visited both the parishes and led various sessions at the seminars. Mr. Gohar in his sessions about spiritual and social development advised the youth to develop their Trust in God and follow His ways. Whereas, Mr. Sonu Peters in his activity-based session motivated the youth to promote sports activities to lure more youngsters towards religion through sports. Youth s group sports activity of youth at Terbella Youth celebrated Father's Day at Charsadda The St. Peter's Church youth especially invited Mr. Insar Gohar, the Diocesan Youth Officer and Ms. Sarah Asghar, the Diocesan Youth President to witness the event. Both of them admired and encouraged the youth to carry on with the good work. Mr. Gohar in his motivational speech talked about 'Obedience of Heavenly Father', as well as the earthly fathers. Group photo of participants on Father's Day 15 June 2014: The youth group of St, Peter's Church, Charsadda celebrated Father's Day. After the worship service, the youth organized various entertaining activities such as, music shows, skits etc; dedicated to Fathers for their loving care. The youth members also presented gifts as a token of love, to their fathers. All the fathers present at the occasion felt overwhelmed by the love of their children. Page 3
4 Beautician s Course for the blast affectees A random act of kindness Beautician s Course in progress Distribution of Cheques by Salvation Amry s Staff The Diocesan Development & Relief sector s ongoing 2 months Beautician s Course for the female bomb blast affectees will end in the month of August Around 30 trainees attend the classes on regular basis. Hopefully, after the training most of them will be able to make a living out of this professional training.. It is heartwarming to learn that different organizations think and act alike; such as, the Church of Scotland has provided funds for the training, and the Diocese of Peshawar is providing the training, whereas the US Aid intends to provide finances for business. All these above mentioned efforts of various organizations will ultimately enable the affectees to become financially self reliant and will uplift their self esteem. The Salvation Army Pakistan is a partner organization of the Diocese of Peshawar and is jointly running a few projects for the uplift of the Christian community. Recently a few employees of the Salvation Army provided a small time financial help to the top ten victims (the most severely injured and financially very poor, with no family support at all.) of the All Saints Church bomb blast victims from their personal pockets. Their contribution is to reassure them that they are not forgotten, neither abandoned. It rather reminds the community to come forward to console the injured bodies and souls who have only been victimized because they believed in Jesus Christ. Page 4
