2 FM & CSA Approved Emergency Shutoff Valves for Fuel, Oil and Gas Service Sometimes Things Go Wrong It s why we have safety goggles, airbags and lifeboats. And it s why oil, gas and other critical media processing industries require flow control solutions that include reliable, safe and efficient emergency shut down (ESD) valves. Process line elements can fail for a number of reasons: errors in product specification, selection and sizing; corroded valves and other inline assemblies; gas leakage due to a faulty seal, the list goes on. But how can engineers be assured that the ESD valves they specify are indeed reliable, safe and efficient? Well, just as goggles, airbags and lifeboats have to comply with strict construction and performance standards to be acceptable for service, so do ESD valves perhaps even more so given the often prolonged catastrophic circumstances in which they are being asked to operate. There is an exhaustive battery of rigorous testing procedures that ESD valve manufacturers must follow in order to ensure their product will work as intended in the event that something goes wrong in the process lines. As technology evolves, so do the guidelines governing acceptable ESD valve components, materials, construction and performance. Setting The Standards For ESD Valves Two North America testing agencies provide standards to ensure ESD valve assemblies will live up to their critical job description. One of these agencies is Factory Mutual (FM). The other is the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Overview Factory Mutual Factory Mutual, known today as FM Global, helps ensure the quality of a company s products by giving them the opportunity to obtain third-party certification from FM Approvals. Industrial and commercial companies around the world rely on products and services that are FM Approved and specification tested to protect their properties from loss. The FM Approved mark, which is backed by scientific research and testing, tells customers that a certain product conforms to the highest standards. FM Approvals certifies products and services with a unique focus on objectively testing property loss prevention products and services, and certifying those that meet rigorous loss prevention standards. The organization also encourages the development and use of FM Approved products and services that improve and advance property loss prevention practices. Factory Mutual has approved a range of Jamesbury ESD ball valve assemblies from Metso. These include supervisory cock valves, gas and oil shut-off valves and emergency shut-off and firesafe valves. Jamesbury valves are built and qualified by FM for approval according to FM Spec 7400 for liquid and gas safety shut-off. The valves undergo a rigorous cycle endurance test over a wide temperature range. Jamesbury ESD ball valves with Fire-Tite seat and sealing are built to API-607 specification for fire-safe service and submitted to FM, where they must retain their Fire-Tite sealing integrity at temperatures of up to 1800ºF for at least 30 minutes in order to be granted approval. Specific valves are rated for fail-safe performance in a range of critical ESD service applications, as detailed in this article. 2 Emergency Shutoff Valves for Fuel, Oil and Gas Service

3 Jamesbury Supervisory Cock Valves & Electric Interlocking Fuel Gas and Fuel Oil Cocks Figure 1051 These are FM approved to provide shut-off and position indication for proper fuel light-off of either fuel oil or gas burners. Developed for use with semi-automatic or manual safety interlock burner management systems, these electric interlocking cocks indicate the burner cock is closed before the light-off sequence can begin. Figure 1051 supervisory cocks have low turning torque and feature reliable, tight-sealing for critical fuel control applications. Should the valve be accidentally moved out of the full closed position, the not closed condition is signaled to the safety interlock system. For added protection, the position of the valve handle gives visual at-a-glance indication of open or closed position. Valve body materials include carbon steel or 316 stainless steel. Jamesbury Gas and Oil Shut-off Valves Figure 1052 Consisting of a valve, actuator, limit switch and solenoid pilot valve, these valve assemblies are FM approved for providing protection against fire and explosive hazards during light-off and operation of fuel burning equipment. When the electrical signal is interrupted, or when there is a loss of air pressure, these fuel line valves will close rapidly to give positive shut-off of fuel flow. This action may be initiated either by safety trip or normal shut down sequencing. Valves have either a carbon steel or a 316 stainless steel body. Jamesbury Shut-off and Fire-Safe Valves Figure 1075 FM approved for use with all types of media including flammable gases, liquids and toxic fluids. These assemblies consist of a Jamesbury Fire-Tite valve and Torq-Handle. They provide automatic closure of a normally open valve in the event of fire or excessive temperature. Figure 1051 Figure 1052 Figure 1075 Overview Canadian Standards Association The Canadian Standards Association is an association serving business, industry, government and consumers in Canada and the global marketplace. As a solutions-oriented organization, CSA operates in Canada and around the world to develop standards that address real needs, such as enhancing public safety and health, advancing the quality of life, helping to preserve the environment, and facilitating trade. Accreditation of a Standards Development Organization (SDO) is the formal recognition of their competence to develop standards, and comply with specific accreditation criteria as determined by the accreditor. The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) has responsibility for coordination of the National Standards System (NSS) in Canada and has accredited CSA as one of four nationally accredited SDOs. Metso s Jamesbury valve manufacturing facility conducts testing in an in-house CSA-certified lab. This allows shorter design-to-market periods while ensuring adherence to increasingly stringent safety and performance standards for ESD valve assemblies. Valves undergo a 100,000 cycle endurance test over a wide range of temperatures to ensure they will operate consistently in the harsh extremes of the Canadian environment. Among the assemblies CSA tested for ESD service are Figure 1056 and 1057 gas shut-off and vent valves. Shut-off can be initiated by either a safety trip or as part of normal shut down sequencing. Both Figure 1056 and Figure 1057 valve assemblies consist of an actuator, limit switch and solenoid pilot valve. Actuators can be either a Jamesbury Quadra-Powr spring-diaphragm actuator, or a Jamesbury Series VPVL doubleopposed piston actuator, which combines high cycle life and rugged construction with an extremely compact and symmetrical design. Figure 1056 valves additionally are equipped with an Emission-Pak Assembly a doublepacked, live-loaded V-ring stem seal design that utilizes stacked and guided spring washers to maintain a constant packing force without over-compression. A Stonel Switch is also part of Figure 1056 and 1057 valve assemblies. Stonel Quartz options include a single pole, double pole, and mechanical or proximity switch type. The Jamesbury Figure 1058 Automatic Safety Gas Valves Figure Bulletin B131-5 The Jamesbury Figure 1058 Automatic Safety Gas Valves are EN-161/EN (formerly EN264) approved for providing protection against fire and explosive hazards during light-off and operation of gas-burning equipment. When the electrical signal is interrupted or when there is a loss of air pressure, these gas-line valves operate rapidly to isolate or allow gas flow. This action may be initiated either by safety trip or normal shutdown sequencing. The units consist of a valve with actuator and solenoid pilot valve, and are approved as an assembly. Full and reduced bore valves through 6" are available in ANSI Class 150/300 and DIN PN Three piece valves 1/2" 2" are also available with screwed or weld ends.
