Hypothesis The taller a person is the larger lung capacity they will have. People who are taller have larger lungs; therefore their oxygen intake is bigger than shorter people. Variables Independent- The age of the samples from which the data is being collected is important in order to get the best result. Although this experiment is meant to determine whether a person s height has a relationship with their lung capacity, their age, gender and lifestyles should also be taken into consideration. Dependent- A person s total air flow from out of their lungs according to their height. Control of Variables- This experiment will only be tested on people from ages 16 to 18. Materials- Peak Flow Meter- this device will be used to measure the sample s total air flow from their bodies. Tape Measure- This device will be used to measure the sample s height in feet. Calculator- Used to calculate the mean. Notebook and Pencil- used to record the data collected. 15 people- This experiment will be performed on 15 people. Their gender does not matter but their age should be Procedure- Step 1. First I will need to measure our 15 subjects in feet using a measuring tape. Step 2. After measuring the subjects, hand them a Peak Flow Meter. Step 3. The person should then inhale deeply and place their mouth on the mouthpiece and blow as hard as possible. Have the same person do this three times
and record their 2 highest results. It is very important that after every person the mouthpiece is replaced with a new one to avoid spreading viruses. Step 4. The Meter will then measure the person s maximum airflow. Step5. Then I will record the data Step 6. These steps will be performed on 15 different people 2 times Data Collection and Presentation 1 st Trial Peron s Height Maximum Air Flow (L/MIN)
2 nd Trial Height Air Flow (L/MIN)
Sample Calculations- Averages Person 1: =717 2= Person 2: =738 2=369 Person 3: =715 2=357.5 Person 4: =807 2=403.5 Person 5: =913 2=456.5 Person 6: =972 2=486 Person 7: =1,095 2=547.5 Person 8: =1,005 2=502.5 Person 9: =1,089 2=544.5 Person 10: =1,149 2=574.5 Person 11: =1,158 2=579 Person 12: =1,267 2=633.5 Person 13: =1,369 2=684.5 Person 14: =1,375 2=687.5 Person 15: =1,353 2=676.5
Trial 1 Trial Summary of Results After looking at these results, I have come to the conclusion that taller people have a considerably higher air flow from their lungs than shorter people. People under 5 5 had an average below 500 (L/MIN) and people taller than that had anything above 500. Taller people regardless of their age or gender usually have a higher lung capacity than shorter people. This is because their diaphragm is larger and the total oxygen intake is also larger. Conclusion and Evaluation The Results of my project showed that the taller a person is, the larger flow of air or lung capacity they have. This is proven by the data I collected. It s possible for a shorter person to have a larger lung capacity than a taller one, but it s probably due to the two person s lifestyles like if one is a smoker and the other is an athlete. The averages show that a taller person is more likely to have a larger lung capacity. Limitations of Procedure
Everything in this experiment was done with precaution in order to get the best and most accurate possible. The only limitation was not asking the people who participated in the experiment whether they lead a healthy lifestyle or if they smoke and how often. Procedure Modifications For better results next time this experiment is performed again, to get better results it should be done on people with similar lifestyles. Either on a group of people who smoke regularly or people who are involved in any sports activities. This way we can see if height is truly a factor in the lung capacity of people without worrying about any variables that might affect our results.
