4 OBJECTIVES OF THE COMPETITION GISBURN AUCTION MART S objective is to encourage young people (under 27 years old), the future of our industry, to buy and sell cattle through the live auction ring and to gain experience and business skills in the art of showmanship in the tasks of selection, feeding and presenting animals for show and sale, which is essential for the future well being of the beef industry. Young people are offered the opportunity to purchase cattle (interest free) at any Gisburn August, September, October and November sales and feed them through the winter and offer them for show and sale at Gisburn Spring Store Cattle Sale. The Young Handler Competition is about keeping the skills of stockmanship alive and thriving. Without the youngsters we risk losing the future in agriculture. Putting young people at the forefront gives them the profile and credit they deserve. In the words of Bill Cowling, 10 years as honorary show director of the Great Yorkshire Show, it gives you great heart in the future of agriculture / gisburn@rturner.co.uk

9 GISBURN AUCTION MART REPORT YOUNG HANDLERS CATTLE OVER WINTERING COMPETITION Friday 4 th March and Sale on Saturday 5 th March 2016 HANNAH ORMEROD was crowned supreme champion of Gisburn Auction Marts Cattle Over Wintering Competition on Friday evening, 4 th March The pre-sale show was co-judged by Kelly Jowett of Thornton, Bradford and last year s show winner Jack Pickup from Roughlee. The judges selected 26 year old Hannah s 11mo Limousin x heifer as the winner having earlier in the evening picked up two first prizes in class 5 for the best presented and handled animal and class 15 for the best female animal shown by a competitor years old. Hannah should be an inspiration to others. This is her first time big win, having never entered a livestock show until Gisburn Auction s young handlers competition, other than as a little girl with lambs in the Young Shepherd class at Trawden show. An ex-myerscough student with an Equine Science degree she is a qualified riding instructor and endurance competitor at Endurance Great Britain level. Hannah has worked on different farms and helps her Grandad with his pedigree Limousin herd Limehill Limousins, Burnley alongside being a rep for Southwest Lancs Farmers (SWLF). Hannah never expected to win, she just wanted to get through without any problems. Through research and hard work Hannah transferred her existing skills and knowledge to produce a champion. Having bought the Limousin heifer as a 7-8mo through a Gisburn Thursday stirk sale from David Gott, Trawden, Hannah could see the animal had a nice shape, a good back end and it would do well, halter training at every opportunity. Mr Gott watched on with pride as Hannah went on to win not just two firsts but champion too. The heifer was bought for 775 and sold on Saturday for 1560, a gross profit margin of 785 which enabled Hannah to buy the heifer back as she intends to breed from her. The gross profit margin averaged at of all the competitors. TWELVE YEAR OLD BEN NUTTER of Pendle Young Farmers Club took reserve champion in show with his 10 month old Blonde heifer realising 1160 and leaving him a gross margin of 650. Ben is a keen stockman having his own flock of Dalesbred sheep which was funded from a previous year s win at the Gisburn Auction s show and sale. As well as doing stock judging with the Young Farmers Club he has shown sheep and cattle at local shows and was well placed with a homebred calf at the English Winter Fair at Stoneleigh. Ben was also the winner of the Young Farmers award trophy at Gisburn Auction s Christmas Prime Cattle Show When asked what he will do with this year s show winnings - he is looking to invest it back into his own livestock and perhaps buy another young animal for next year s show. PETER JACKSON recently joined Chorley young farmer s club late summer 2015 and was awarded the prestigious Young Farmers Club members George T Bargh Memorial trophy for his knowledge, stockmanship and presentation of his British Blue heifer. This award is kindly supported by Gisburn Young Farmers Club who are a massive help with stewarding of the show. Peter is 12 years old and has shown at county level for the Jackson family s young pedigree herd of Hereford cattle Eveter Herefords. A special award for the highest average daily liveweight gain went to a joint first place of 1.505kg to Imogen Threlfall s 8mo British Blue male and Robert Capstick s 13mo Limousin heifer. Second place of 1.497kg went to Ben Nutter s reserve champion Blonde heifer followed by eiight year old Hector Eccles first prize male in third place with 1.448kg. First prize under 8 year old went to Alfie Nutter with his British Blue and 2 nd in the best heifer class, realising 620. Fifteen year old sister Bethany Nutter also took first prize in her age group with a British Blue heifer realising Freddie and Henry Shorrock took first prizes in their age categories as did James Beresford and Ellie Forster. Freddie s Blue male went on to take a special prize society rosette and 30 from the British Blue Cattle Society for the best British Blue in show followed by a 20 prize and rosette to Bethany Duerdon s Blue heifer. Other breed societies offered rosettes and branded giveaways to their breeds in show. Well done to all who took part. A big thank you to all the show sponsors including The Farmers Guardian, Mr & Mrs J Woods of Bowland Foods Ltd, Armstrong Watson, Yorkshire Bank and Gisburn Auction Mart.
