8 8 Key Concepts: Alterna9ves Assessment and Informed Subs9tu9on Consider the environmental and human health impacts of alterna0ves to restricted or undesired substances to ensure that the new materials represent a move to safer chemical or nonchemical alterna0ves. Know what you know and what you don t know Don t replace a chemical of concern with an unknown

Risk = the probability of an adverse effect in an organism, system or (sub) popula0on caused under specified circumstances by exposure to a substance. Risk = ƒ(hazard x Exposure)

22 Making Informed Decisions Consider the chemical s specific applica0on & use Use the full GreenScreen TM hazard table, not just the Benchmark e.g., a BM 3 chemical with moderate eye irrita0on would not be a good choice for an eye wash!! e.g., Deciding between two chemicals with the same BM score Apply Risk Management All Chemicals Need Risk Management, but it s a lot easier with inherently safer chemicals 22
