2 Twin-track strategy of solar control and thermal insulation using the COMBI coating. Efficient COMBI coatings The thermally insulating selective COMBI coatings are a boon to modern architecture. A range of coating systems suitable for a wide variety of applications offers a tailored selection of solar control, thermal insulation and light transmission properties to planners and architects. The functions, combined in more respects than one, optimise in a cost-efficient way the overall energy management of the building. The task of reducing the heat transition to an absolute minimum is convincingly achieved. The results can be felt not only in the markedly lower heating costs, but also in the palpable gain in comfort. Thanks to outstanding solar control properties, heating up of the interiors is prevented, and incident solar energy is effectively reflected away. This represents a major contribution towards minimising the costs for cooling energy. But passive-solar energy gains are also possible, in line with legal regulations. This function unit is consistant in all COMBI coatings with unbeatable transparency. Rooms with good natural light achieve a balance between pleasant working conditions and reduced artificial lighting. Excellent selectivity is the key feature of modern solar control coatings. This balance in efficiency between light transmission and overall energy transmittance is the result of a complex coating system. The long-wave infra-red rays, mainly responsible for heating up interiors, are prevented from passing through they are effectively reflected by the coating. The shorter-wave visible rays by contrast can pass through almost unhindered. In dialogue with the surroundings A restrained appearance symbolises openness yet elegance. Thanks to its attractive transparency and a choice between excellent colour neutrality or defined colour nuances, the glazing blends harmoniously into any existing building environment. The stylistic device of colour reflections extends the architectonic design options. The entire outer surface of a building can be transformed into a single unit by the use of spandrel glazing. Wide range of COMBI coatings for a wide range of uses High performance in glass makes the latter usable in a wide range of applications. These multifunctional products are appreciated not only for the large area glass facades but in new housing projects, refurbishment work and for glass annexes, in particularly conservatories where the all round properties come into their own. Depending on where the products are used, the glass can be toughened safety glass or laminated safety glass. Light transmission COMBI coating 2

4 Everything's in favour of solar control with SUNSTOP T. Facing the sun effectively The building of contemporary glass structures is directly linked to environmentally compatible energy-saving concepts. This is why perfect interaction between energy transmittance and translucency is so highly rated. The low overall energy transmittance, or g value, contributes to a considerable reduction of the cooling energy requirement, since heating up inside the building is greatly reduced. The necessity to permanently reduce the energy costs for airconditioning systems and nevertheless maintain an agreeable temperature level in interiors can today be planned for individually. Highly effective solar control therefore allows full use of natural light. A high workplace quality with optimum use of daylight also reduces the need for artificial lighting. Effective play of colour with solar energy Intelligent solar control with SUNSTOP T solar control glazing is distinguished by an enormously low solar energy transmittance. The latter efficiently avoids an undesirable overheating of the premises while ensuring a high light transmission and a remarkable outside aspect. The exemplary nature of its reflection values helps to achieve lower energy consumption by air-conditioning equipment, and hence a marked reduction in costs. To give glass facades a specific character, accentuation by means of colour reflections is employed as an individual design aid. The colour aesthetics of a building encased in glass self-confidently assert a specific identity. Coloured glass reflections are an ideal way of influencing cityscapes or enhancing contemporary architecture. The impressive appearance can be complemented by spandrel glazing. Thanks to their neutral or colour-shaded reflections in the glass frontages, the SUNSTOP T glazings offer new creative prospects to the designers. The letter T stands for temperable, which means that the glass can be heated, i.e. tempered. The layer designs of the SUNSTOP T products range allow cutting them to size and, if necessary, printing and tempering them directly at the glass processor s premises. This ensures the planers and architects shorter and respected delivery deadlines. Showing its strength in bitter cold Light transmission SUNSTOP T coating thermal insulation coating In combination with a neutral thermal insulation coating that faces the solar control coating, an important contribution is made towards limiting heat losses. This is crucial not only in terms of environmental protection by reducing the output of the poisonous carbon dioxide harmful to the climate but also as a holistic approach to minimising costs. The highly effective thermal insulation coating makes itself felt in a greater feeling of comfort, even in the immediate vicinity of the glass surface. 4

6 COMBI coating The technical data at a glance. Two in one The capability to combine solar control, thermal insulation, light transmission, transparency and appearance is one of our core competences. The COMBI coatings therefore meet both functional specifications for a wide range of planning tasks, and the aesthetic requirements of the planners. Insulating glasses with COMBI coatings for the pane structure COMBI 6 mm / Cavity 16 mm argon / Float 4 mm have the following technical values: COMBI Neutral 41/21 COMBI Neutral 51/26 COMBI Neutral 61/32 COMBI Neutral 70/35 SELEKT 1) COMBI T Silver 48 2) Light transmittance 41 % 51 % 61 % 70 % 72 % 48 % Light reflection outside 18 % 16 % 13 % 14 % 12 % 46 % Direct radiation transmission 20 % 25 % 31 % 35 % 39 % 33 % Radiation reflection 32 % 35 % 28 % 33 % 28 % 45 % Radiation absorption 48 % 40 % 40 % 32 % 33 % 22 % Secondary heat reflection interior 3 % 3 % 3 % 2 % 3 % 3 % Overall energy transmittance as per EN % 28 % 34 % 37 % 42 % 35 % b factor (g value to EN 410 / 0.8) Shading coefficient (g value to EN 410 / 0.87) Selectivity characteristic Colour reproduction index Ra in transmission Ug value as per EN W/m 2 K 1.1 W/m 2 K 1.1 W/m 2 K 1.1 W/m 2 K 1.1 W/m 2 K 1.1 W/m 2 K Recommended spandrel glazing BD 70 BD 70 BDBD 62 S?? 10 Seeing to architectonic ideas. b factor (SC = Shading Coefficient) The b factor is the quotient from the overall energy transmittance of a glazing system and the overall energy transmittance of an uncoated insulation glass. The b factor is therefore a measure of the solar control effect. The g value of the uncoated two-sheet insulation glass is here set at 80 % as a constant. Example: SUNSTOP T Blue 30 has an overall energy transmittance of 22 % as per EN b factor = = Radiation absorption The radiation absorption or energy absorption is understood as that proportion of radiation in the entire range of the solar spectrum that is absorbed by the glazing. High radiation absorption Incident solar energy 100% For glass combinations with a radiation absorption factor of more than 50 %, the solar control glass should generally be tempered. UV transmission Radiation reflection Light transmission Radiation absorption Light transmission Natural daylight is not only more agreeable than artificial light to the human eye, it also affects our metabolism and hormone balance. The light transmission of a glazing system is the percentage of sunlight in the visible light range that is allowed to pass from the outside into the interior. The LT value is partly dependent on the coating systems. COMBI coatings in particular are optimised to select between light and heat energy from the sun's rays. COMBI and SUNSTOP T solar control glasses have unlike normal glass - considerably lower UV transmission values. Colour reproduction index Ra in transmission The colour reproduction index compares colour changes in objects located behind the coated thermal insulation glass. For the technical test, a normal light source is used, The scale for Ra goes up to 100. The maximum Ra value attainable with a glazing system is 99. Saturn-Tower, Wien (A) COMBI Neutral 50/25 10

11 Selectivity characteristic S The selectivity characteristic indicates the ratio of translucency to overall energy transmittance. This characteristic S evaluates the solar control glasses in respect of the required high translucency relative to the low overall energy transmittance aimed at. A low selectivity characteristic expresses a favourable ratio. Light transmission degree S = Overall energy transmittance Spandrel glazing We recommend, for a well-harmonized glass frontage, the SWISSPANEL spandrel glasses.these glasses are suitable for warm and cold facade structures. The spandrel glazing is as a rule tempered, their minimum size is therefore 30 x 80 cm. Chameleon effect The reflection colour of coated solar control glasses is mainly affected by the incident light, so differing light conditions for example overcast or clear skies can alter the colour development Incident solar energy 100% of the glass. The colours of the surroundings also play an important role. Tender documents To draw up a precise quotation for solar control glasses, we keep detailed tender documents for architects and planners. These Radiation reflection Secondary heat emission Radiation transmission Secondary heat emission Total energy transmittance documents are available from us on request. Overall energy transmittance The g value states how much energy of the incident solar energy passes through the glass into the interior. The value is made up of two parts: direct radiation transmission and secondary heat emission. Secondary heat emission results from the fact that the glass heats up as a result of the sunlight and then in turn emits heat both inwards and outwards. ABB Baden (CH) SELEKT 11
