Lajjitaadi Avasthas Brihat Parashara Hora Sastras Method of how Grahas influence Grahas By Ernst Wilhelm Each Graha craves the fulfillment of its goals as signified by its inherent nature and by the Bhavas it rules. Grahas, however, have different natures and thus different goals and different ways in which they try to realize their goals. Sometimes these goals and ways are supportive of each other, and sometimes they are not, for which reason a Graha is friendly, unfriendly or neutral towards another Graha. Due to their being friendly Grahas there is almost always some supportive influence that each Graha is getting. Similarly, due to their being unfriendly Grahas there is always an element of conflict within each individual that requires an individual or fate to make the choice of taking one Graha s agenda as a priority while sacrificing another s. Thus even in the most powerful charts where all Graha s are in good dignity, there will be disappointment, lack of fulfillment and loss as the individual pursues some aspects of life at the expense of others. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra provides a very involved method of determining the effects of the influences between the Grahas through the Lajjitaadi Avasthas. The Lajjitaadi Avasthas are the most useful and accurate method of accessing planetary influences upon each other, much better than the commonly used method of simply looking at the influences from benefic and malefic Grahas. If you want to know if a planet is really capable of producing so that you can make accurate predictions, Lajjitaadi Avasthas are critical. Lajjitaadi Avasthas are also the best way to analyze a Bhava Lord. Lajjito garvitazcaiva ksudhitastrsitastatha, muditah ksobhitazcaiva grahabhavah prakirtitah. Lajjita, Garvita, Kshudhita, Trishita, Mudita and also Kshobhita are called the states of the Grahas. Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra: Graha Avasthas, 11 Lajjitaadi Avastha means, ashamed, etc. condition. The Lajjitaadi Avasthas are named thus because the first Avastha in the group is called Lajjita, ashamed. There are six Avasthas in the Lajjita group: Lajjita ashamed, Garvita proud, Kshudhita starved, Trishita thirsty, Mudita delighted and Kshobhita agitated. An individual will feel ashamed, healthily proud, starved, thirsty, delighted or agitated with their life, in accordance with these six Avasthas. When considering Lajjitaadi Avasthas, it is the natural relationships between the Grahas which must be considered. LAJJITA ASHAMED AVASTHA putragehagatah kheto rahuketuyuto thava, ravimandakujairyukto lajjitto graha ucyate. A Graha in the 5 th or joining Rahu or Ketu, and conjunct the Sun, Saturn, or Mars, such a Graha is spoken of as Lajjita. Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra: Graha Avasthas, 12
Lajjita Avastha is in effect when a Graha that is joined with the Sun, Saturn or Mars is in the 5 th or joined with Rahu or Ketu. The stronger the Sun, Saturn or Mars, the greater is the shame of the Lajjita Graha. While the Graha in Lajjita Avastha can produce, but it will never feel good about itself and so while possibly being productive, the Lajjita Graha will never be happy. GARVITA PROUD AVASTHA tuggasthanagato va pi trikone pi bhavetpunah, garvitah so pi gadito nirvizamkam dvijottama. Being in exaltation place or also Trikona causes Garvita, which is also known as Nirvishamka, Dvijottama. Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra: Graha Avasthas, 13 Garvita Avastha is in effect when a Graha is in exaltation or Mulatrikona. The Graha in Garvita Avastha feels a healthy sense of pride and confidence in respect to its accomplishments. Garvita Avastha is also known as Nirvishamka fearless/confident Avastha. KSHUDHITA STARVED AVASTHA zatrugehi satruyukto ripudrsto bhavedyadi, ksudhitah sa ca vij~eyah zaniyukto yatha tatha. In enemy s Rasi, enemy joining, enemy aspecting, in that case Kshudhita is caused; and so it is also known when Saturn joins. Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra: Graha Avasthas, 14 Kshudhita starved Avastha is in effect when a Graha is in an enemy s Rasi, joined with an enemy, planetary aspected by an enemy or when joined by Saturn, thus there are four distinct possibilites that form Kshudhita Avastha: A Graha in an Enemy s Rasi A Graha in an enemy s Rasi becomes inauspiscious it is in Sushupti sleeping Avastha and unable to do manage any of its affairs. This leaves it wide open to being destroyed by other Grahas. A Graha joined by an Enemy The enemy of a Graha, as it goes about fulfilling its goals, will always disrupt the goals of the Graha that it is an enemy towards if it joins that Graha. The stronger the enemy, the greater its focus on its goals and thus the more the Kshudhita Graha is starved. A Graha Aspected by an Enemy The enemy of a Graha, as it goes about fulfilling its goals, will also disrupt the goals of the Graha that it is an enemy towards if it aspects that Graha. The stronger the enemy, the greater its focus on its goals and the stronger its aspect the more those goals detract from the goals of the aspected Kshudhita Graha.
A Graha Joined by Saturn Saturn always starves the Graha that it joins. The stronger Saturn, the more Spartan he becomes and so the more he starves the Graha he joins. Kshudhita Avastha is the most comman way in which a Graha will be caused to fail in the production and fulfillment of its goals. If a Graha has only Kshudhita influences upon it and no Garvita or Mudita influences, then it will not be able to realize any of its goals. TRISHITA THIRSTY AVASTHA jalarazau shtitah khetah zatruna ca valokitah, zubhagraha na pazyanti trsitah sa udahrtah A Graha standing in a water rasi and aspected by an enemy with no auspiscious Graha aspecting is said to be Trishita. Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra: Graha Avasthas, 15 Trishita Avastha is in effect whenever a Graha is in a water Rasi and Graha aspected by an enemy. Additionally, a Saumya Graha aspecting combats the Trishita. An inimical Graha joining a Graha in a watery rasi will cause Kshudhita, it is only the aspecting enemy that will cause Trishita. Trishita Avastha lets us know that a Graha in a watery Rasi can still be productive even when aspected by enemies, though it will not be happy. As the name Trishita thirsty implies, Trishita Avastha indicates the lack of emotional fulfillment that a Graha experiences. Unlike Kshudhita Avastha, however, a Trishita Graha can be productive, but never fulfilling of happiness. MUDITA DELIGHTED AVASTHA mitragehi mitrayukto mitrena ca vilokitah, guruna sahito yazca muditah sa prakirtitah. In friend s Rasi, joined with a friend and aspected by a friend, and that joined with Jupiter is called Mudita. Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra: Graha Avasthas, 16 Mudita Avastha is in effect when a Graha is in a friend s Rasi, joined with a friend, Graha aspected by a friend or joined by Jupiter, thus there are four distinct possibilites that form Mudita Avastha: A Graha in a friend s Rasi A Graha in a friend s Rasi is productive, and the stronger it s ruling friend the more productive it will be. A Graha joined by a friend The friend of a Graha will naturally support the Graha that it joins when it is friendly towards that Graha as it goes about fulfilling its own goals. The stronger the joining friend, the more support the Mudita Graha gains.
Important Note: Saturn joining is never treated as a friend in respect to this Avastha, since Saturn joining forms the previously mentioned inauspiscious Kshudhita Avastha. Important Note: Like Saturn, the Sun joining does not form Mudita Avastha even when it is a friend; instead, the Sun forms the inauspiscious Kshobhita Avasthas mentioned below. A Graha planetary aspected by a natural friend The friend of a Graha will naturally support the Graha that it is friendly towards to the degree of its aspect and strength. The stronger the aspecting friend and the stronger its aspect, the more support the Mudita Graha gains. A Graha joined by Jupiter Jupiter always supports the Graha that it joins. The stronger Jupiter, the more support it grants the joined Graha. Mudita Avastha is the most comman way in which a Graha becomes capable of fulfilling its goals and responsibilities. If a Graha has only Mudita influences upon it and no Lajjita, Kshudhita Trishita or Kshobhita influences, then it will provide a great degree of internal and external fulfillment. KSHOBHITA AGITATED AVASTHA ravina sahito yazca papa pazyanti sarvatha, ksobhitam tam vijaniyacchatruna yadi viksitah. Joined by the Sun and that aspected by Paapas should always be known as Kshobhita if the aspecting is an enemy. Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra: Graha Avasthas, 17 Kshobhita Avastha is in effect when a Graha is joining the Sun or aspected by a Kruura Graha who is also an enemy, thus there are two possiblities for Kshobhita Avastha: A Graha joining the Sun. The Sun is the Graha of sacrifice and purification, thus any Graha joined with the Sun suffers the same way that grains thrown into the the fire during a Puja are destroyed. And in the same way that a live sacrifice may be disturbed and feel fearful upon being sacrificed, so feels the agitated Graha who is with the Sun. The stronger the Sun, the greater the sacrifice of the other Graha. A Graha planetary aspected by an inimical cruel Graha. An inimical Kruura Graha aspecting causes Kshobhita in accordance with its strength. As the inimical Kruura Graha ruthlessly goes about fuflilling its responsibilities it cares not for the suffering of the neglected Kshudhita Graha. Kshobhita means agitated in the sense of being frightened and alarmed. It is similiar in effect to Kshudhita Avastha in that it destroys the Grahas capability to produce and support its indications and goals. However, it does so with greater fear and dread attached.
EFFECTS OF LAJJITAADI AVASTHAS yesu yesu ca bhavesu grahastisthanti sarvatha, ksudhitah ksobhito vapi tadbhavaphalanazanah. In whichever Bhava (Rasi) a Graha is standing that is in Kshudhita or Kshobhita in every respect, the effects of that Bhava (Rasi) are lost. Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra: Graha Avasthas, 18 The two Avasthas: Kshudhita and Kshobhita are the two most damaging Avasthas. When a Graha has only Kshudhita and Kshobhita influences, and no Garvita or Mudita influences, it will not only be completely unproductive, it will entirely destroy the Rasi in which it is placed and thus any Bhava cusps falling in that Rasi. If it has more Kshudhita and Kshobhita influences than Mudita and Garvita influences, it will be productive at times only to loose everything at other times and significantly damage the Rasi it is placed in, though not destroy it completely. On the other hand, a Graha with only Garvita and Mudita influences will reveal a most healthy Rasi and be extremely prodcutive. If the Garvita and Mudita influences are greater than the Kshudhita and Kshobhita influences, then the Rasi will fare relatively well and the Graha itself be relatively productive. evam kramena boddhavyam sarvabhavesu pinditaih, bala balavicarena vaktavyah phalanirnayah. anyonyam ca muda yuktam phalam mizram vadetpunah, balahine tada hanih sabale ca mahaphalam. The certain effects the informed should declare thus by the proceeding minglings in the Bhavas, considering the strengths and weaknesses. Mudita and different, endowed with mixed effects; in deficient strength, then deficient; and with strength, great effects. Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra: Graha Avasthas, The Lajjitaadi effects are almost always mixed and thus it becomes very important to consider the strengths of the different influences in order to determine if the constructive Mudita and Garvita influences outweigh the destructive Kshobhita and Kshudhita influences. Lajjitaadi Avasthas work hand in hand with the three Jagraadadi Avasthas: Jagrad Awake Avastha, Svapna Sleepy Avastha and Sushupti Sleeping/Unconscious Avastha. The Jagraadadi Avastha indicates the strength of the Graha to produce and the strength of its friends to support it, and the strength of its enemies to take away from it. Jagrad awake Avastha A Graha in exaltation or own Rasi also include Mulatrikona. Effect: Full A Jagrad Graha has its full strength to affect its own affairs as well as to affect the affairs of the Grahas it joins or aspects. Svapna sleepy Avastha A Graha in a natural friend s Rasi or in a natural neutral s Rasi. Effect: Half A Svapna Graha has half its strength to affect its own affairs as well as to affect the affairs of the Grahas it joins or aspects. Sushupti sleeping/unconscious Avastha A Graha in debilitation or natural enemy s Rasi.
Effect: Empty A Sushupti Graha has no strength to manage its own affairs as well as no strength with which to affect the affairs of the Grahas it joins or aspects. Many permutations of this will be found, but there are two extremes which once understood one will easily understand the remaining permutations: 1. A Graha in Awake Avastha can be stifled by a Kshobhita or Kshudhita causing Graha if that Graha is also Awake, but not if that Graha is Sleepy or Sleeping. 2. A Graha in Sleeping Avastha can be somewhat productive if influenced by a Mudita causing Graha if that Graha is Awake, but not if that Graha is Sleepy or Sleeping. Lajjitaadi Avasthas also work hand in hand with the Balaadi Avasthas (taught in the Judging Bhavas Course) and whether the Graha is in the beginning, middle or end of a Varga is also important. karmasthane sthito yasya lajjitastrsitastatha, ksudhitah ksobhito vapi sa naro duhkhabhajanam. The person partakes of sorrow when Lajjita, Trishita, Kshudhita or Kshobhita are in the Karma place. Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra: Graha Avasthas, 21 The 10 th Rasi from the Lagna is the Karma Sthana, the place where one s actions are concentrated and manifested. To have these ill Avasthas destroy the 10 th Rasi and thus spoil one s capacity for significant fruit bearing actions is very disheartening. A Graha in one of these ill Avasthas in the 10 th Rasi indicates a source of sorrow and pain that destroys the person s capacity to actively be productive. sutasthane bhavedyasya lajjito graham eva ca, sutanazo bhavettasya ekastisthati sarvada. And also a Lajjita Graha in the child place causes loss of children though always one remaining. Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra: Graha Avasthas, 22 Lajjita Avastha in the 5 th Rasi is considered to cause greater trouble than in most other Rasis. The wellbeing and successful raising of children was considered very important, and is still considered as the most important duty for a householder to fulfill. Inability to do so, whether through bad luck or simple negligence, was considered a stigma. Lajjita Avastha in the 5 th Rasi indicates the unsucceful or improper use of one s intelligence and creativity. ksobhitastrsitazcaiva saptame yasya va bhavet, sriyate tasya nari ca satyamahurdvijottama. Kshobhita and also Trishita in the seventh cause that to the wife, I tell you truly, Dvijottama. Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra: Graha Avasthas, 23 Kshobhita Avastha destroys which Rasi it is found in, but it particularly causes loss of the spouse when found in the 7 th Rasi. Trishita Avastha generally causes lack with respect to the Bhava in which
it is found but without destroying the effects of the Bhava. In the 7 th Rasi, however, Trishita Avastha indicates lack that is the result of loss. RASIS FROM KARAKAS The twelve Rasis as counted from each Karaka have importance relevant to the Karaka. Thus the 2 nd from Jupiter is relevant for wealth while the 9 th from Jupiter is relevant to one s Guru. For judging these different Rasis from the Karakas it is the Lajjitaadi Avasthas that are to be used. The Lajjitaadi Avastha of a Graha in these Rasis will dictate the favorable or unfavorable effects of these Rasis.
USING LAJJITAADI AVASTHAS The 6 types of Lajjitaadi Avasthas are very rarely seen pure usually there is an overlap of three or more Avasthas, which is why most things in life have their ups and downs. This makes judging the Lajjitaadi Avasthas a bit tricky at times. The following steps can make the process easier and allow you to avoid missing something. 1. Look for Sun and Saturn conjunctions to the Graha. Sun and Saturn will always take away from the Graha s ability to produce the Sun through Kshobhita agitated and Saturn through Kshudhita starved. 2. Look for Jupiter conjuncting the Graha. Jupiter will always assist the Graha he joins through Mudita delighted Avastha. 3. Determine if the Graha is in a Water Rasi (Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces). If it is, remember that aspects from enemies will only reduce the level of fulfillment that the individual receives from the Graha but not destroy the Graha - it becomes Trishita thirsty instead of Kshudhita starved. Similarly, if the Water Rasi is a natural enemy s rasi it is only thirsty and not starved. 4. Determine the Grahas Natural Dignity: a. Determine if the Graha is in Own Rasi, Exaltation or Mulatrikona all of which will serve the Graha well, especially Exaltation and Mulatrikona which can withstand a lot of abuse and still produce thanks to Garvita proud Avastha. b. Determine if the Graha is in a natural friend s Rasi, in which case it will become productive through Mudita delighted Avastha. The stronger its friendly lord, the more productive it will become. c. Determine if the Graha is in a natural enemy s Rasi, in which case it will have no strength to produce through Kshudhita starved Avastha. The stronger its inimical lord, the more emphasis on its lord and the less on the Graha in question. 5. Examine conjunctions to the Graha: a. Natural friends joining support the Graha through Mudita delighted Avastha. The stronger the friend, the greater the support. (Jupiter is always helpful in this case, even if not a friend and the Sun and Saturn are always harmful in this case, even if a friend.) b. Natural enemies joining take away from the Graha through Kshudhita starved Avastha. The stronger the enemy, the greater the disruption. (The Sun and Saturn joining always take away even if not an enemy.) 6. Examine aspects to the Graha: a. Natural friends aspecting support the Graha through Mudita delighted Avastha. The stronger the friend and the stronger its aspect, the greater the support. b. Natural enemies aspecting take away from the Graha through Kshudhita starved Avastha. The stronger the enemy and the stronger its aspect, the greater the disruption. If the enemy is also a Kruura cruel Graha (Sun, Saturn, Mars, Waning Moon or Mercury joined with a malefic) than the pain is greater through Kshobhita agitated Avastha. 7. If the Graha is in an Water Rasi then the aspect of a Saumya gentle Graha that is not an enemy will remove any thirst created by an enemy aspect though Trishita thirsty Avastha. 8. If the Graha is in the 5 th and joined with Sun, Saturn or Mars, or if the Graha is joined with Rahu or Ketu and also with the Sun, Saturn or Mars then the Graha may be able to produce through other favorable Avashtas, but its happiness will be much less on account of Lajjita ashamed Avastha.
