Cerazette Keeping a record How do I find out more? You can ask for more information on Cerazette at your doctor s surgery or at family planning clinics. A diary card is attached. We suggest you keep a record of your bleeding pattern and, if you have any concerns, discuss them with your doctor or family planning trained nurse if bleeding becomes heavy or prolonged. Diary Card Reporting of side effects: If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in the package leaflet. You can also report side effects directly via the Yellow Card Scheme at By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine. 2 Introducing Cerazette Your oral contraceptive You have been prescribed a contraceptive called Cerazette. This leaflet is designed to answer many of the questions you may have about Cerazette and your doctor, nurse or the family planning clinic can also help to explain Cerazette to you. How oral contraceptives stop pregnancy To understand Cerazette, you need to know a little about how oral contraceptives work. Combined oral contraceptives (COCs) contain two hormones, an oestrogen and a progestogen. Progestogen only pills (POPs) contain just one hormone, a progestogen. There are two main ways oral contraceptives can prevent you becoming pregnant: They can prevent eggs being released from your ovaries (and if there is no egg for the sperm to fertilise, you cannot get pregnant). They can thicken fluid at the entry to your womb (the cervix) preventing sperm reaching an egg. 1 WOMN Diary Card(2).indd /04/ :26

How Cerazette works Cerazette is a POP and contains the progestogen desogestrel. It works primarily by preventing eggs being released from your ovaries which is the main way that combined pills (COCs) work. Most progestogen-only pills (POPs) work primarily by thickening the fluid in the cervix. For reliable contraception, it is very important that you take Cerazette at approximately the same time each day. If you forget to take Cerazette and are more than 12 hours late in taking any tablet, you may not be protected against pregnancy. How to take Cerazette When you start taking Cerazette: If you are not using contraception at present, start taking Cerazette at the beginning of your period on the first day of your monthly bleed. If you start Cerazette in this way, you will be protected from pregnancy as soon as you begin taking it. Until this time, an additional form of contraception (e.g. condoms) should be used to prevent pregnancy. If you are switching either from a combined oral contraceptive ( the Pill ) or another form of contraception, please read your in-pack information leaflet or speak to your doctor or family planning nurse before starting Cerazette. Take one tablet at the same time every day. When you finish the pack, start your next pack on the next day (unlike some combined oral contraceptives, there is no need for a pill-free week each month). You must take Cerazette at about the same time each day. It helps to have a regular routine for example when you brush your teeth (in the morning or at night), take your pill. 2 3 WOMN Diary Card(2).indd /04/ :26

Remember! If you forget to take your Cerazette pill If you are LESS THAN 12 HOURS LATE * Take your missed pill as soon as you remember and the next one at the usual time. You are still protected against pregnancy. If you are MORE THAN 12 HOURS LATE * You may not be protected against pregnancy. Take your missed pill as soon as you remember, and the next one at the usual time, even if this means taking two pills on the same day. Continue to take your tablets at the usual time and use an additional method of contraception such as condoms for the next 7 days. Cerazette and your periods Changes in your bleeding pattern Because Cerazette is taken every day, and there is no pill-free break, your bleeding patterns may change. Some women will have slight staining, while in others it may be prolonged or heavy. Over a few months, however, some women find their bleeding becomes lighter and less frequent with Cerazette. Although these changes in bleeding pattern may be inconvenient, they do not mean that Cerazette is not working. Making a note of the days you have bleeding may help you monitor your bleeding pattern over time. A diary card to help you record your bleeding patterns is attached at the back of this booklet. If your bleeding is heavy or prolonged you should see your doctor. If your periods stop Some women taking Cerazette will stop having periods altogether. If you miss a period remember that Cerazette has been shown to be highly effective. If you have taken your pills correctly (see opposite), have not had a stomach upset (see the following section, Questions about Cerazette ) or taken any drugs which might affect your pill (see Questions about Cerazette ), it is unlikely that you are pregnant. So continue taking your pill as normal but ask your doctor or family planning trained nurse if you are concerned. *See your in-pack information leaflet for further details. 4 5 WOMN Diary Card(2).indd /04/ :26

Some questions about Cerazette I m already on the pill how do I change to Cerazette? You can easily switch to Cerazette from most forms of contraception. The patient information leaflet in each pack of Cerazette tells you how to switch from other pills. You can also ask your doctor or family planning nurse to explain this to you. Are there any side-effects? As with all medicines, some side-effects have been reported. Side-effects for some women include headache, nausea, acne, breast pain, mood changes, libido changes and weight gain. Please see the information pack in each pack of Cerazette for other possible side effects, warnings and precautions. It is important to tell your doctor if you develop any side-effects or reactions. Can I drive while taking Cerazette? Yes. Cerazette will not affect your ability to drive. I ve just had a baby. When can I start Cerazette? You should discuss when to start Cerazette with your doctor or nurse. If more than 28 days have elapsed since delivery, an additional barrier method of contraception (condoms for example) should be used for the first 7 days of tablet taking. However, if intercourse has already occurred, pregnancy should be excluded before Cerazette is started or you should wait for your first menstrual period. I am breastfeeding, can I take Cerazette? Cerazette can be used by breastfeeding mothers. You should check with your doctor whether it is okay for you. Could Cerazette affect my fertility? Cerazette is quickly removed from your body after you stop taking the tablets and you should return to your normal level of fertility depending upon your age. Do other medicines affect Cerazette? Some medicines can affect Cerazette, for example St John s Wort and certain treatments for epilepsy, tuberculosis and HIV. You must let your doctor know you are taking Cerazette before being prescribed any other medicines. Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure. What if I have an upset stomach? If you vomit within 3 4 hours of the usual time of taking your Cerazette tablet or have severe diarrhoea, it may not work. It s just like missing a tablet follow the advice for missed tablets. So take another tablet as soon as possible after vomiting, and take the subsequent tablets at the usual time. If you are able to take another tablet within 12 hours of the usual time (i.e. within 36 hours after the last tablet taken), and haven t vomited again, you will still be protected against pregnancy. If the next tablet is taken more than 12 hours after the usual time (i.e. more than 36 hours after the last tablet taken), or if the vomiting lasts for more than 12 hours, you will not be protected. Use a condom too, for the next 7 days of tablet taking. Can I use Cerazette after a miscarriage? Yes, but see your doctor for further advice. 6 7 WOMN Diary Card(2).indd /04/ :26

Cerazette Is Cerazette for me? Cerazette may be suitable for many women, though your doctor or family planning nurse may choose to prescribe Cerazette specifically when the use of a non-oestrogen-based contraceptive is preferred. There are certain medical conditions that mean you shouldn t use hormones, but your doctor or family planning nurse will have chosen Cerazette because it is right for you. If you have any new medical conditions diagnosed while taking Cerazette you should speak to your doctor or family planning nurse. Cerazette Bleeding means that you need to use two or more pads or tampons per day. Spotting means that you use only one pad or tampon per day.
