8 Safety precautions Using your ASUS Transformer Book This ASUS Transformer Book should only be used in environments with ambient temperatures between 5 C (41 F) and 35 C (95 F). Refer to the rating label on the bottom of your ASUS Transformer Book and ensure that your power adapter complies with this rating. Do not leave your ASUS Transformer Book on your lap or near any part of your body to prevent discomfort or injury from heat exposure. Do not use damaged power cords, accessories, and other peripherals with your ASUS Transformer Book. While powered on, ensure that you do not carry or cover your ASUS Transformer Book with any materials that can reduce air circulation. Do not place your ASUS Transformer Book on uneven or unstable work surfaces. You can send your ASUS Transformer Book through x-ray machines (used on items placed on conveyor belts), but do not expose them to magnetic detectors and wands. Contact your airline provider to learn about related inflight services that can be used and restrictions that must be followed when using your ASUS Transformer Book in-flight. 8 ASUS Transformer Book E-Manual

9 Caring for your ASUS Transformer Book Disconnect the AC power and remove the battery pack (if applicable) before cleaning your ASUS Transformer Book. Use a clean cellulose sponge or chamois cloth dampened with a solution of nonabrasive detergent and a few drops of warm water. Remove any extra moisture from your ASUS Transformer Book using a dry cloth. Do not use strong solvents such as thinners, benzene, or other chemicals on or near your ASUS Transformer Book. Do not place objects on top of your ASUS Transformer Book. Do not expose your ASUS Transformer Book to strong magnetic or electrical fields. Do not use or expose your ASUS Transformer Book near liquids, rain, or moisture. Do not expose your ASUS Transformer Book to dusty environments. Do not use your ASUS Transformer Book near gas leaks. 10 Proper disposal Do not throw your ASUS Transformer Book in municipal waste. This product has been designed to enable proper reuse of parts and recycling. 13 Touch panel display front camera The built-in camera allows you to take pictures or record videos using your ASUS Transformer Book. NOTE: To toggle between the front and rear cameras (on selected models) of the touch panel display, press the ASUS Transformer Book key then select Camera Rotation. Camera indicator The camera indicator lights up when the built-in camera is in use. Ambient light sensor This ambient light sensor detects the amount of ambient light in your environment. It allows the system to automatically adjust the brightness of the display depending on the ambient light condition. Touch panel display This detachable touch panel display provides excellent viewing features for photos, videos, and other multimedia files on your ASUS Transformer Book. The touch-enabled panel also allows you to operate your ASUS Transformer Book using touch screen gestures. NOTE: For more details, refer to the Gestures for the touch screen and touchpad section in this manual. Windows 8 touch button Touch this button to go back to the Start screen. 14 Touch panel display holder This holder allows you to connect the touch panel display to the ASUS Transformer Book s mobile dock. WARNING! Dock the touch panel display before adjusting the angle of the touch display panel holder. For more details, refer to the Undocking or docking the touch panel display section in this manual. Dock latch Move the latch to the left and hold it to detach the touch panel display from the dock. ASUS Transformer Book key Press this key to launch the ASUS Transformer Book App Launcher. NOTE: For more information, refer to the ASUS Transformer Book App Launcher section in this manual. Keyboard The keyboard provides full-sized QWERTY keys with a comfortable travel depth for typing. It also enables you to use the function keys, allows quick access to Windows, and controls other multimedia functions. NOTE: The keyboard layout differs by model or territory. Some selected models come with a backlit keyboard. Touchpad The touchpad allows the use of multi-gestures to navigate onscreen, providing an intuitive user experience. It also simulates the functions of a regular mouse. NOTE: For more details, refer to the Gestures for the touchpad section in this manual. 14 ASUS Transformer Book E-Manual

15 Touch panel display features The ASUS Transformer Book comes with a detachable touch panel display that works like a Tablet PC to suit your mobile needs. The touch panel display is also equipped with its own features for work and play. NOTE: For more details on detaching or reattaching the touch panel display, refer to the Undocking or docking the touch panel display section in this manual. Top view Power button Press the power button to turn your ASUS Transformer Book on or off. You can also use the power button to put your ASUS Transformer Book to sleep or hibernate mode and wake it up from sleep or hibernate mode. In the event that your ASUS Transformer Book becomes unresponsive, press and hold the power button for about four (4) seconds until your ASUS Transformer Book shuts down. Microphone The built-in microphone can be used for video conferencing, voice narrations, or simple audio recording. ASUS Transformer Book E-Manual 15

16 Bottom view MicroSD card slot The touch panel display comes with an additional builtin memory card reader slot that supports microsd and microsdhc card formats. Hinge holes Align and insert the latch hooks into these holes to securely attach the touch panel display to the dock. Magnetic power connector When the touch panel display is detached from the dock, connect the bundled power adapter into this connector to charge the battery pack and supply power to the touch panel display. WARNING! The adapter may become warm to hot while in use. Ensure not to cover the adapter and keep it away from your body while it is connected to a power source. IMPORTANT! Use only the bundled power adapter to charge the battery pack and supply power to your ASUS Transformer Book. Dock connector The dock connector connects the touch panel display to the dock. When connected, you can enjoy a standard QWERTY keyboard and a host of featured ports including two USB 3.0 ports, an SD/SDHC memory card reader, an RJ-45 LAN port, and a mini DisplayPort for a digital audio/video interface. 16 ASUS Transformer Book E-Manual

17 Rear view Touch panel display rear camera (on selected models) The built-in camera allows you to take pictures or record videos using your ASUS Transformer Book. NOTE: To toggle between the front and rear cameras (on selected models) of the touch panel display, press the ASUS Transformer Book key then select Camera Rotation. Air vents The air vents allow cool air to enter and warm air to exit the ASUS Transformer Book s touch panel display. 18 Right Side LAN port Insert the network cable into this port to connect to a local area network (LAN). USB 3.0 ports These Universal Serial Bus 3.0 (USB 3.0) ports provide a transfer rate of up to 5 Gbit/s and are backward compatible to USB 2.0. Mini DisplayPort Use this port to connect your ASUS Transformer Book to a DisplayPort or VGA external display. NOTE: This mini DisplayPort does not support DP++ (Dualmode DisplayPort) functions. 18 ASUS Transformer Book E-Manual

19 Left Side Magnetic power connector This power connector allows you to magnetically attach the power connector of your AC adapter to your ASUS Transformer Book. Connect the bundled power adapter into this connector to charge the battery pack and supply power to your ASUS Transformer Book. WARNING! The adapter may become warm to hot while in use. Ensure not to cover the adapter and keep it away from your body while it is connected to a power source. IMPORTANT! Use only the bundled power adapter to charge the battery pack and supply power to your ASUS Transformer Book. Memory card reader This ASUS Transformer Book has a single built-in memory card reader slot that supports SD and SDHC card formats. Two-color battery charge indicator (dock) The two-color LED provides a visual indication of the battery s charge status. Refer to the LED Color Table in the next page for details. 20 LED Color Table Color Solid Green Status The ASUS Transformer Book s mobile dock or touch panel display is plugged to a power source, charging its battery, and the battery power is between 95% and 100%. Solid Orange The ASUS Transformer Book s mobile dock is plugged to a power source, charging its battery, and the battery power is less than 95%. The touch panel is connected to the mobile dock, charging its battery, and the touch panel display s battery power is less than 30%. NOTE: This charging process is automatically enabled even while your system is on sleep mode or turned off. Blinking Orange Lights off The ASUS Transformer Book s touch panel display or mobile dock is running on battery mode and the battery power is less than 10%. 21 Drive activity indicator This indicator lights up when your ASUS Transformer Book is accessing the internal storage drives. Headphone output/microphone input combo jack port This port allows you to connect your ASUS Transformer Book to amplified speakers or headphones. You can also use this port to connect your ASUS Transformer Book to an external microphone. Micro HDMI port This port is for a micro High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) connector and is HDCP compliant for HD DVD, Blu-ray and other protected content playback. Two-color battery charge indicator (tablet) The two-color LED provides a visual indication of the battery s charge status. Refer to the LED Color Table in page 20 for details. Manual reset hole If the system becomes unresponsive, insert a straightened paper clip into the hole to force-restart your ASUS Transformer Book. WARNING! Forcing the system to restart may result to data loss. We strongly recommend that you back up your data regularly. Volume button Press this button to increase or decrease the volume. 24 Getting started Charge your ASUS Transformer Book. A. Plug the AC power adapter into a 100V~240V power source. B. Connect the DC power connector into your ASUS Transformer Book s power (DC) input. Charge the ASUS Transformer Book for 3 hours before using it in battery mode for the first time. IMPORTANT! Ensure that your ASUS Transformer Book is plugged -in to a grounded power outlet before turning it on for the first time. When using your ASUS Transformer Book on power adapter mode, the socket outlet must be near to the unit and easily accessible. Locate the input/output rating label on your ASUS Transformer Book and ensure that it matches the input/output rating information on your power adapter. Some ASUS Transformer Book models may have multiple rating output currents based on the available SKU. Refer below for the ASUS Transformer Book power adapter information: - Input voltage: Vac - Input frequency: 50-60Hz - Rating output current: 3.42A (65W) - Rating output voltage: 19V 24 ASUS Transformer Book E-Manual

27 Docking NOTE: When docking the touch panel display while the system is turned on, Windows 8 automatically detects the available storage drives in the dock and launches their respective storage drive windows via Autoplay. To disable this feature: 1. Go to the Windows 8 Control Panel. 2. Select Small icons under View by then select Autoplay from the list of icons. 2. Under Removable drives, select Take no action from the Removable drive option list. 3. Tap Save to save the new settings then exit. ASUS Transformer Book E-Manual 27

28 Gestures for the touch screen and touchpad Gestures allow you to launch programs and access the settings of your ASUS Transformer Book. Refer to the following illustrations when using hand gestures on your touch screen and touchpad. Using the touch screen Left edge swipe Right edge swipe Swipe from the left edge of the screen to shuffle your running apps. Zoom out Swipe from the right edge of the screen to launch the Charms bar. Zoom in Bring together your two fingers on the touch panel. Spread apart your two fingers on the touch panel. 28 ASUS Transformer Book E-Manual

29 Top edge swipe Finger slide In the Start screen, swipe from the top edge of the screen to view the All Apps bar. In a running app, swipe from the top edge of the screen to view its menu. Tap and hold Slide your finger to scroll up and down and slide your finger to pan the screen left or right. Tap/Double tap To move an app, tap and hold the app tile and drag it to a new location. To close an app, tap and hold the top side of the running app and drag it down to the bottom of the screen to close it. Tap an app to launch it. 31 One-finger gestures Tap/Double tap In the Start screen, tap an app to launch it. In Desktop mode, double-tap an application to launch it. Drag and drop Double-tap an item, then slide the same finger without lifting it off the touchpad. To drop the item to its new location, lift your finger from the touchpad. 32 Left-click Right-click In the Start screen, click an app to launch it. In Desktop mode, doubleclick an application to launch it. In the Start screen, click an app to select it and launch the settings bar. You can also press this button to launch the All Apps bar. In Desktop mode, use this button to open the rightclick menu. NOTE: The areas inside the dotted line represent the locations of the left mouse button and the right mouse button on the touchpad. 32 ASUS Transformer Book E-Manual

33 Top edge swipe In the Start screen, swipe from the top edge to launch the All Apps bar. In a running app, swipe from the top edge to view its menu. 34 Two-finger gestures Tap Rotate Tap two fingers on the touchpad to simulate the right-click function. Two-finger scroll (up/down) To rotate an image, place two fingers on the touchpad then turn one finger clockwise or counterclockwise while the other stays still. Two-finger scroll (left/right) Slide two fingers to scroll up or down. Zoom out Slide two fingers to scroll left or right. Zoom in Bring together your two fingers on the touchpad. 35 Drag and drop Select an item then press and hold the left button. Using your other finger, slide down the touchpad to drag and drop the item to a new location. Three-finger gestures Swipe up Swipe down Swipe three fingers upward to show all running applications. Swipe three fingers downward to show the Desktop mode. ASUS Transformer Book E-Manual 35

36 Using the keyboard Function keys The function keys on your ASUS Transformer Book s keyboard can trigger the following commands: Puts the ASUS Transformer Book into Sleep mode Turns Airplane mode on or off NOTE: When enabled, the Airplane mode disables all wireless connectivity. (on selected models) Decreases keyboard brightness for ASUS Transformer Book models with a backlit keyboard (on selected models) Increases keyboard brightness for ASUS Transformer Book models with a backlit keyboard Decreases display brightness Increases display brightness Turns the touch panel display off Activates the second screen NOTE: Ensure that the second display is connected to your ASUS Transformer Book. 37 Turns the speaker on or off Turns the speaker volume down Turns the speaker volume up (on selected models) Toggles the ambient light sensor on or off Function keys for ASUS Apps Your ASUS Transformer Book also comes with a special set of function keys that can be used to launch ASUS apps. Toggles the ASUS Splendid Video Enhancement Technology app to switch between these display color enhancement modes: Gamma Correction, Vivid Mode, Theater Mode, Soft Mode, My Profile, and Normal. 38 Windows 8 keys There are two special Windows keys on your ASUS Transformer Book s keyboard used as below: Press this key to go back to the Start screen. If you are already in the Start screen, press this key to go back to the last app you opened. Press this key to simulate the right-click functions. Using the ASUS Transformer Book key Pressing this key launches the ASUS Transformer Book App Launcher inside Windows 8. 40 Starting for the first time When you start your computer for the first time, a series of screens appear to guide you in configuring the basic settings of your Windows 8 operating system. To start your ASUS Transformer Book for the first time: 1. Press the power button on your ASUS Transformer Book. Wait for a few minutes until the setup screen appears. 2. From the setup screen, pick a language to use on your ASUS Transformer Book. 3. Carefully read the License Terms. Tick I accept the terms for using Windows then click Accept. 4. 41 Windows UI Windows 8 comes with a tile-based user interface (UI) which allows you to organize and easily access Windows apps from the Start screen. It also includes the following features that you can use while working on your ASUS Transformer Book. Start screen The Start screen appears after successfully signing in to your user account. It helps organize all the applications you need in just one place. User account Zoom in/out button Windows App These are apps pinned on the Start screen and displayed on tiledformat for easy access. Position your mouse pointer over the app then left-click or tap once to launch it. Press twice then use the arrow keys to browse through the apps. Press to launch an app. Customizing apps You can move, resize, or unpin apps from the Start screen using the following steps: Moving apps Tap and hold the app tile then drag it to a new location. 55 Connecting to wireless networks Wi-Fi Access s, surf the Internet, and share applications via social networking sites using your ASUS Transformer Book s Wi-Fi connection. IMPORTANT! Ensure the Airplane mode is turned off to enable the Wi-Fi function of your ASUS Transformer Book. For more details, refer to the Airplane mode section in this manual. Enabling Wi-Fi Activate Wi-Fi in your ASUS Transformer Book using the following steps on your touch screen touch panel display or touchpad. 1. Launch the Charms bar. 2. Tap and tap. 3. Pairing with other Bluetooth-enabled devices You need to pair your ASUS Transformer Book with other Bluetoothenabled devices to enable data transfers. To do this, use your or touch screen touch panel display or touchpad as follows: 1. Launch the Charms bar. 2. Tap then tap Change PC Settings. 3. 59 Airplane mode The Airplane mode disables wireless communication, allowing you to use your ASUS Transformer Book safely while in-flight. Turning Airplane mode on 1. Launch the Charms bar. or 2. Tap and tap. 3. Move the slider to the right to turn the Airplane mode on. Press. Turning Airplane mode off 1. Launch the Charms bar. or 2. Tap and tap. 3. Move the slider to the left to turn the Airplane mode off. Press. NOTE: Contact your airline provider to learn about related inflight services that can be used and restrictions that must be followed when using your ASUS Transformer Book in-flight. 60 Connecting to wired networks You can also connect to wired networks, such as local area networks and broadband Internet connection, using your ASUS Transformer Book s LAN port. NOTE: Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for details or your network administrator for assistance in setting up your Internet connection. To configure your settings, refer to the following procedures. IMPORTANT! Ensure that a network cable is connected between your ASUS Transformer Book s LAN port and a local area network before performing the following actions. Configuring a dynamic IP/PPPoE network connection 1. Launch Desktop. or 2. From the Windows taskbar, right-click the network icon Center. then tap Open Network and Sharing 3. Type the IP address, Subnet mask and Default gateway from your service provider. 4. 65 Turning your ASUS Transformer Book off You can turn off your ASUS Transformer Book by doing either of the following procedures: Tap from the Charms bar then tap > or Shut down to do a normal shutdown. From the log-in screen, tap > Shut down. You can also shut down your ASUS Transformer Book using Desktop mode. To do this, launch the desktop then press alt + f4 to launch the Shut Down window. Select Shut Down from the drop-down list then select OK. If your ASUS Transformer Book is unresponsive, press and hold the power button for at least four (4) seconds until your ASUS Transformer Book turns off. Putting your ASUS Transformer Book on Sleep mode To put your ASUS Tranformer Book on Sleep mode, press the power button once. You can also put your ASUS Transformer Book to Sleep mode using Desktop mode. To do this, launch the desktop then press alt + f4 to launch the Shut Down window. Select from these power saving modes. Use these options to customize your power saving mode. Allows you to hide the desktop icons onscreen and turns the presentation mode on or off. Performance mode Use this mode when doing high-performance activities like playing games or conducting business presentations using your ASUS Transformer Book. 71 Instant On Save battery power while your ASUS Transformer Book is on deep sleep mode (Deep S3) using Instant On. NOTE: Deep S3 is a technology that lets you save more battery power while your ASUS Transformer Book is on sleep mode. IMPORTANT! The standby time varies according to your ASUS Transformer Book's remaining battery capacity, computer model, configuration, and operating conditions. Performance mode This mode is default-enabled in your ASUS Transformer Book. It allows the system to return to its last working state in two seconds, even after your ASUS Transformer Book has entered into deep sleep mode. Battery saving mode This mode enables longer standby times allowing the battery to last for up to thirty (30) days or more. When enabled, the ASUS Transformer Book returns to its last working state in as fast as seven seconds, four hours after entering into deep sleep mode. or Tap this to activate the battery saving mode. 82 The Power-on Self Test (POST) The Power-on Self Test (POST) is a series of software-controlled diagnostic tests that run when you turn on or restart your ASUS Transformer Book. The software that controls the POST is installed as a permanent part of the ASUS Transformer Book s architecture. Using POST to access BIOS and Troubleshoot During POST, you can access the BIOS settings or run troubleshooting options using the function keys of your ASUS Transformer Book. You may refer to the following information for more details. BIOS The Basic Input and Output System (BIOS) stores system hardware settings that are needed for system startup in the ASUS Transformer Book. The default BIOS settings apply to most conditions of your ASUS Transformer Book. Do not change the default BIOS settings except in the following circumstances: An error message appears onscreen during system bootup and requests you to run the BIOS Setup. You have installed a new system component that requires further BIOS settings or updates. WARNING: Using inappropriate BIOS settings may result to system instability or boot failure.
