1 Catholic Prayers A TREASURY OF CATHOLIC PRAYER Prayer and worship are at the heart of our Catholic faith. It is important that our students know and pray the traditional prayers of the Church, as well as give voice to prayer in their own thoughts and words. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us, The wonder of prayer is revealed beside the well where we come seeking water. There, Christ comes to meet evey human being. (CCC 2559) This booklet includes texts of many traditional prayers of the Catholic Church for use with your family and indicates the grade level when children should know these prayers. May God richly bless you and your family as you pray these prayers together in your home. FOR YOUR FAMILY
2 Act of Contrition (Contemporary) (Grades 2-8) O my God, I am sorry I have sinned. Please forgive me. I know you love me. I want to love you and to be good to everyone. Help me make up for my sins. I will try to do better from now on. Amen. Angel of God (Grades K - 8) Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom God s love commits me here. Ever this day, be at my side, To light, to guard, to rule and guide. Amen. Act of Contrition (Traditional) (Grades 2-8) O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You and I detest all my sins, because of Your just punishments; but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen. Act of Faith (Grades 6-8) O my God, I firmly believe that You are the one God in three Divine Persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I believe that Your Divine Son became man and died for our sins and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches, because You revealed them; You who can neither deceive nor be deceived. Act of Hope (Grades 6-8) O my God, relying on Your infinite goodness and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of your grace and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Act of Love (Grades 6-8) O my God, I love you above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because You are all good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of You. I forgive all who have injured me and I ask pardon of all whom I have injured. Angelus (Grades 5-8) The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Mother of God... Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done to me according to your word. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Mother of God... and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Mother of God... Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts, that we to whom the incarnation of Christ, your Son, was made known by the message of an angel; may by his passion and cross, be brought to the glory of His resurrection, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
3 Apostles Creed (Grades 5-8) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day, he rose from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence, He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen. Divine Praises (Grades 3-8 be exposed to this prayer) Blessed be God. Blessed be His Holy Name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man. Blessed be the name of Jesus. Blessed be His Most Sacred Heart. Blessed be His Most Precious Blood. Blessed be Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete. Blessed be the Great Mother of God, Mary most holy. Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception. Blessed be her glorious Assumption. Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother. Blessed be St. Joseph, her most chaste spouse. Blessed be God in His angels and in His saints. Come Holy Spirit (Grades 7-8) Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your divine love. V. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. R. And You shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray: O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of your faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in your consolation, through Christ our Lord. To you we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to you we send up our sighs, mourning, and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, O most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Amen.

Magnificat My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord, My spirit finds joy in God my savior, For he has looked upon his servant in her lowliness; all ages come shall call me blessed. God who is mighty has done great by me, holy is His name; His mercy is from age to age on those He has shown might with his arm; He has confused the proud in their inmost thoughts. He has deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places. The hungry He has given every good thing, while the rich He has sent empty away. He has upheld Israel His servant, ever mindful of his mercy; even as He promised our father, promised Abraham and his descendants forever. Memorare Remember, most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen. Morning Offering (Grades 7-8) O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You all my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day; for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, in reparation for my sins, for the intentions of all our associates, and for the general intention recommended this month.
9 Nicene Creed (Grades 4-8) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation, He came down from heaven. By the power of the Holy Spirit, he was born of the Virgin Mary, and become man. For our sake, He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day, He rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right had of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Our Father (Grades 1-8) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name; your Kingdom come; your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
