Winter/Spring 2012 Volume XIX, Issue 1-2 President-Elect's Report Inside this issue: Robin Gordon Greetings from your President-Elect! President-Elect s Report Elite Conference Information 1 2 Summer Session Weird Science Experiments Region News 7-9 Extra Information 10 Recipes 11 Upcoming Events 12 This past November I attended the ACTE conference in St. Louis. It was a good conference that has a lot of information about how to be a self-reflective teacher and leader. It was unveiled at the ACTE State Leadership Luncheon that ACTE will be changing formats from a convention style to an international summit style. The next conference in Atlanta, Georgia, will be called ACTE Vision 2012, an International Summit on Excellence in Career Tech Education. You may ask, how does this affect us as ACTE FACS members and IFACSTA affiliates. At this time I do not have a full answer for you. However, I will say that the ACTE state affiliates, such as IACTE, seem to be encouraged and empowered by this change. The idea is to bring both the professional and educational worlds together so the professional world can help our educational settings. ACTE is changing and we need to be aware of the changes and encourage them with an open eye. On a different note, conference planning is going very well. We are in the full swing. I thought it would be nice for me to recognize our conference planning team, as they are truly the heart and sole of our planning! Please send them a letter or an of encouragement, because they truly are so great! Continued p. 2

Page 5 Weird Science mini experiments Mini experiments from 2011 IFACSTA Conference round tables Each mini experiment could be used as a teacher or student demonstration during class discussion or a mini experiment in appropriate lessons. Check Cells - This mini experiment could be used in Child Development in discussion of DNA. Scrape inside of check with a toothpick. Spread on microscope slide. Add one drop of iodine and a slide cover. Look at check cells under the microscope. OOLBLEC could be used in the discussion of science in foods lab (properities of a solid and liquid) or a fun activity for child development. Mix 1/2 cup cornstarch with 1/4 cup water. Store in a plastic bag. Roll in a ball. Hold in the palm of hand. Gak or Silly-putty Polymer could be used in a clothing lab discussion on polyester, nylon and rayon (a polymer) or a fun activity for child development. Dissolve 1 tbsp. borox in 1/2 c. water for the group. Put 1 tbsp. white school glue and 1 tbsp. water into a plastic cup and stir. Add 1 tbsp. borax solution and stir. Save in a baggie. Continued p. 6

Page 6 Weird Science mini experiments continued! Pudding in a Baggie shows the difference in heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures, a method of thickening without cooking, and sensory evaluation (science in foods). Each group - Mix 1 small box instant pudding with 2/3 cup dry milk. Observe heterogeneous mixture. Add 2 cups water. Knead in a baggie. Observe homogeneous mixture. Divide into cups and eat. (use sensory evaluation of pudding - taste, smell, sight, odor, mouthfeel) Surface Tension of Water could be used to discuss how detergent affects the surface tension of water allowing soap or detergent to work on clothes and hands when washed. Place 1 cup cold water in a clear glass bowl. Sprinkle paprika on top of the water in the bowl. The paprika stays on the top of the water due to the surface tension. Immediately add one drop of liquid dish detergent to the middle of the bowl and describe what happens. Thank you so much for your great ideas Carla Nilson!

Page 8 Region I News Jackie Fontillas Region IV Representative Our region has been focusing primarily on preparations for the 2012 IFACSTA conference. Our conference planning committee has been meeting about once a month to discuss plans and progress further with our planning duties. I m also taking ideas and suggestions for our Spring region meeting that will not involve the 2012 conference. Please me at with any suggestions you might have! It will be great to take advantage of the benefits of IFACSTA through regional networking! Region IV News Pam Furrer Region IV Representative Our Region IV Spring Meeting was Saturday, February 4 in Paxton. We were treated to a fascinating demonstration on the beginning steps of making hats at Simply Pat s Hats and Things. We were allowed to peak into her workspace and see her wide selection of one-of-a-kind hats and accessories. We toured the Baier Mansion which was built in the 1800s as a family home, was later used as a private nursing home, and now (after a much-needed renovation) is once again a private home. The mansion features five fireplaces and over 20 stained glass windows. While it has a gas furnace as backup, the Baiers continue heat their home with the original coal boiler. We ended our meeting with lunch at Tin Pan in downtown Paxton. It was great to get a chance to visit and network with other FACS professionals. Pam Furrer Region IV Rep

Region 4 Meeting!! Region V News Marie Kelting Region V Representative This year is going very fast! Region V meeting was rescheduled for Sat., Feb. 4 at the Lo-Cal Cafe in Edwardsville. The Topic "Health & Wellness" was presented by Evonne White, co-owner, and followed by a discussion on the topic. Areas covered: starting the business (& reasons making up the mission statement), goals of the business, business' work with the community organizations & schools; gluten free diets (& theories on why so many people are now on the diet), what does "organic" really mean; vegan; sugar the new bad ingredient; childhood obesity; & fat equivalents to common foods in test tube form (pretty gross!). Did you know that Nasco sends via letters lesson plans to teachers (free)! Our numbers were small (7), but we enjoyed the networking. 3 participants were from other fields in education! We discussed also how we might get more area FACS teachers to join IFACSTA. I also attended IACTE in Normal. It was a productive conference with tons of information to process. I found that I could not get to all the sessions that caught my attention! There's lots of changes happening and we all need to be informed and ready to comply! Spring meeting?? Working on it. If you have an idea, please let me know!

Page 11 RECIPE!! Chocolate Covered Pretzels 1/3 block of white chocolate 1/3 block of milk chocolate 12 pretzels 2 sheets of wax paper Directions: 1. Place the milk chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and the white chocolate in another. 2. Microwave one bowl on high for 1 minute. 3. Remove and stir with a rubber spatula. (The chips should melt while you are stirring, but if they don't, you can continue to microwave for 15 more seconds, then stir again.) 4. Microwave the other bowl on high for 1 minute, and stir until the chocolate is melted. 5. Once chocolate has melted, spoon about half a cup onto a waxed paper lined cookie sheet. Stir back and forth with a spoon until chocolate thickens a little. 6. Taking a pretzel rod by one end, dip the other end into the chocolate, rolling it back and forth until it is well covered. Leave the end you are holding uncovered. 7. Place on a separate sheet of wax paper and decorate. 8. Leave on wax paper to cool and harden. VARIATIONS: You can use sprinkles to decorate your pretzels. You may also use the colored chocolate melting chips to drizzle on your pretzels for added decoration. Thank you Jackie Fontillas for submitting this recipe!
