The 1920s A BOOMing economy!

Post-war economic boom During WW1 production increased, and unemployment decreased! And yet.. Americans could not buy normal items because Following the war rationing and government control over the economy lifted - American families had purchasing power! People wanted to live in the here and now rather than live according to means - Americans showed no interest in being thrifty! Rapid industry growth and technology boom increased American confidence in buying so more people borrowed and using credit Late 1920s more than half American families lived on the edge or right below the barely making it level - as a result their food, car, other goods were bought with CREDIT!

There s more than meets the eye. Before 1920s people either paid full price or did not buy the item - borrowing money was looked down upon and embarrassing Banks gave easy credit and retailers offered irresistible deals through installment buying! Installment plans - people made initial payment and then paid balance in series of payments with interest + s People afford goods never able to before Take good home immediately Economic boom! More products, more workers, more money in economy - s Buying products can t afford Lose job? False sense of security

Before 1920 why did American s not borrow money from banks? A. Illegal because of the war - the government needed money for the war effort B. People did not have money because all their money was going to liberty bonds C. Borrowing money was not seen as ok according to society D. Banks were not established until the 1920s

Everything now can be bought in easy, little payments With people able to buy things for the first time - consumer spending went through roof which means economy went through roof! BUY, BUY, BUY!! Businesses realized using installment plans and credit more people would buy - they were competing with other stores to outsell their goods soo.. People spent to demonstrate social standing Americans made 75% of car purchases on installment plans - Ford Model T cost $290!!!

Reaching all Americans Mail order catalogs set up to help rural farmers - trip to town sometimes cost hours or days Sears and Roebuck and Montgomery Ward selling $200 million goods every year Catalogs over 1,000 pages offered tools, clothing, stoves, everything! 1925 Sears sold $243 million, 95% by mail

How did mail order catalogs in the 1920s connect all Americans? A. For the first time all Americans were able to buy the same goods B. Farmers farther from cities had the ability to stay in their home and purchase goods available to everyone C. They were free to every household and the goods were very cheap D. All Americans could buy the same item so houses, cars, everything looked identical

Reaching all Americans Companies turned to advertising to help promote goods - planned elaborate campaigns to sell products Advertisers able to use radio, magazines, billboards, movies - reach out to Americans more than ever before Advertisers had the high responsibility of inspiring and ennobling (influencing) the commercial world For the first time advertisers studied consumers and what they wanted - opinion polls, market research, tested products

Reaching all Americans Macy s, Marshall Fields, Macy s spent thousands on window displays - persuade people to enter store and the importance of dressing in the latest fashions

Ahhh.. The new products!!!! Did you know people used to take their rugs outside, beat them, and bring back in however.. Think about all the junk outside trash, horse poo, outhouses Movement in 1880s that household dust, dirty clothes and bodies was transmitter of disease shocker! Laborsaving devices operated by foot prior to /7 lived with electricity end 1920s 7/10 lived with electricity! Electricity leads to electric products!

Were labor saving devices really helpful? Explosion of new products because of cost-effective production vacuums, refrigerators, irons, toasters, electric stoves, dishwashers, tumble dryers 1927 Americans spent $667 million on electrical appliances laborsaving devices improved lives of American wives time cut in half to do chores!

OR did they tie women down more to the house? The Home of a Hundred Comforts Hygiene: Freedom from dust and germs, and ultimate disease manufactures spent money convincing women their products would safely, and efficiently decrease the amount of housework - electrical appliances were necessary tools for modern living Celebrities endorsed specific products to convince ordinary people they too could be famous!

1928 ad featured a fashionably dressed woman leaving to play golf during the day caption said she was no longer tied down by housework since she spring cleans with electricity which was readily available at the flip of a switch Use of electricity and labor saving devices will allow the housewife to keep her home clean, her appearance neat, and enjoy leisure activities!

Advertising slogans Woodbury facial soap - A skin you love to touch American Tobacco Company which made Lucky Strike cigarettes - Reach for a Lucky instead of a sweet Goodyear built first blimp in 1925! Businesses started sponsoring radio shows - Colgate Comedy Hour, Palmolive Hour, Maxwell House Concert

Why did the advertising industry explode during the 1920s? A. Radios, billboards, magazines, and catalogs were central to American homes B. The industry was just lucky Americans wanted to spend money C. Government ran out of money due to the war D. Because advertisers spent millions on television ads Senteo Question To set the properties right click and select Senteo Question Object->Properties...

THE GRASS ISN T ALWAYS GREENER BY END OF 1920S, 90% OF GOODS BOUGHT ON CREDIT FARMERS, BLACKS, LABORERS, FACTORY WORKERS DID NOT BENEFIT FROM ECONOMIC BOOM EVEN THOUGH THEY SPENT MONEY LIKE THEY WERE BUSINESS OWNERS BECAME RICHER AND RICHER 42% OF AMERICANS WERE LIVING BELOW POVERTY LINE

THE GRASS ISN T ALWAYS GREENER BUREAU LABOR SAID DECENT STANDARD OF LIVING WAS $2,500 A YEAR BUT 65% OF AMERICANS EARNING LESS THAN $2,000 A YEAR! 40% EARNED LESS THAN $1,500 A YEAR!

What economic changes impacted traditional beliefs in the U.S.?
