1 Admission regulations of the University of Hohenheim for the consecutive master s course in Agricultural Economics (July 2008) Please note: only the original admission regulations in German language are legally binding. 1 Scope The University of Hohenheim grants the studyplaces available for the master s course Agricultural Economics, as specified by the relevant regulations of the Ministry for Science by means of the following rules.. 2 Selection Quotas The study places available in accordance with 1 Clause 2 are allocated as follows out of a hundred to - German applicants, - citizens of other EU member states, - foreign or stateless applicants who hold a German university entrance qualification, - children of parents who live in the Federal Republic of Germany and are citizens of countries that have signed the Agreement on the European Economic Area but are not member states of the European Union, provided that these citizens are or have been employed in the Federal Republic of Germany, and out of a hundred to other foreign applicants. For each of these two quotas a separate order of priority is established. Study places that have remained available shall be added to another quota. 3 Application Deadline and Form (1) Applications shall be submitted to the University of Hohenheim in writing. Applications according to 2 clause 1 figure 1 must be received at the university no later than July 15 th, applications according to 2 clause 1 figure 2 no later than March 15 th for commencement of a degree course in the following winter semester at the university. (2) The following documents must be enclosed with the application provided that they are not already at the disposal of the examination office, a) Proof that the admission requirements mentioned in 4 have been met, b) a statement and/or evidence saying the applicant has not forfeited his/her right to sit examinations in a master s course listed in Appendix 3 or is not currently engaged in examination procedures in one of these study courses. 4 Entry Requirements (1) Entry requirements are: 1. Certificate proving the university entrance qualification or a certificate regarded equivalent and 2. an attained above-average bachelor s degree in c) Agricultural Sciences, or d) According appendix 1, or 1

2 2 e) A subject whose contents corresponds to at least 50% of a bachelor programme in agricultuiral sciences and 3. an evidence of a good command of English, generally by means of a TOEFL test with at least 550 points in the paper and pencil test or at least 213 points in the computer based test or at least 79 points in the internet based test. The proof has to be presented in the original and can alternatively be done by one of the language testes mentioned in appendix 4. Number 3 does not apply to applicants whose native language is English or who have already completed a course of studies in English. (2) The following factors can be taken into consideration for the above-average result for the first degree course. a) Degree grades ot at least good (2,5 under the German grading system) from universities or from comparable course of study, b) Grades from specific subjects that convey information on the student s suitability for this master s study course, c) Letters of recommendation preferably by professors from the university which has awarded the degree relevant for admission; references in other than German or English language have to be accompanied by a true certified translation into German language; d) Evidence of the applicant s specilisation classification within the university from which the relevant degree has been obtained (ranking). (3) The admissions committee will decide upon the equivalence of educational backgrounds and the comparability of university degrees. The acknowledgement of foreign degrees shall be done in accordance with the recommendations of the German Conference of the Secretaries of Education as well as the agreements within the framework of university cooperation. In case of doubt, advice from the Centre of Foreign Education (ZAB) shall be taken into account. If applicants hold an above-average intermediate diploma and can prove that they have completed a total of six semesters of full-time study in one of the study courses listed in appendix 2, the requirement for an equivalence test is waived. 5 Admission Requirements (1) Should the number of applicants qualified in accordance with 4 exceed the total number of places available, a ranking order shall be drawn up and selection shall occur on the basis of the following criteria: a) Character, orientation and overall grade of the degree which according to 4 is an admission requirement for this master s study course, b) Result of the language test which according to 4 Section 1 No. 3 is an admission requirement for this master s study course, c) Special specialist qualification proved by study and examination achievements, d) Vocational training, practical experience or other achievements that show the student s suitability for the chosen study programme, e) Letter of motivation in English. If the documents listed in Fig. a) to d) are not written in English, a true certified translation into English must be submitted additionally. (2) The criteria listed in Section 1 shall be evaluated by the admissions committee on the basis of a set of criteria drawn up in advance. Each individual criterion shall be evaluated on a scale from 1-10.

3 6 Admission Procedure 3 (1) The rector shall decide on the admission upon the recommendation of the admissions committee. (2) Admission to the master course in Agricultural Economics is to be refused if a) the prerequisites mentioned in 3-5 are not met, and / or b) the applicant has forfeited his/her right to sit exams at a German university in one of the master s courses listed in appendix 3 or is currently engaged in examination procedures. (3) The general regulations concerning the admissions procedure in the admissions and matriculation regulations of the University of Hohenheim are not affected. 7 Admissions Committee (1) The admissions committee consists of five members from the full-time academic staff of the university, at least three of whom must be professors as well as a student member with advisory vote. (2) The chairperson, his or her representative and the members of the admissions committee shall be appointed by the faculty council of the Faculty for Agricultural Sciences. Members shall be appointed for a period of two years, the student member for a period of one year. Reappointment is permitted. 8 Commencement of Admission Regulations These terms of admission come into effect on the day of their public announcement in the Official Announcements of the University of Hohenheim. It shall come into force for the first time for the admission procedure for the winter semester 2004/2005.
