ANNUAL REPORT 2014 BI NORWEGIAN BUSINESS SCHOOL - LIBRARY More information:

LEADER From early morning until late at night, seven days a week, the main library is filled with diligent students. One Tuesday last November we had a record number of visits, 4447! The learning resource centre model, which laid the foundation of the building of the library in 2005, is continuously under development, and underlies the interaction between facilities and services that support student learning. The library in one of BI s most important academic services and a strong contributor to student satisfaction. We are open and can offer assistance after the rest of BI has gone home for the day. In 2014, the library took on the role of BI host by providing a meeting place for students, career service, BI student union, student partner, and the international office, and for open student guidance services. BI is more than Nydalen Campus, and with the opening of the library at BI Stavanger in August, BI now offers library services to students and faculty at all campuses. The local libraries are a window to the huge universe of information the library offers. As BI strengthens faculty recruitment, the local libraries have started focusing on developing their research support. Our vision for the next four years is that we are to be A Library to Count On. Happy Reading. STRATEGY During , the library s strategic focus areas were: A digital library our portal to information resources and services A library for learning an inspiring and attractive learning environment. A knowledge bank for research contribute to BI being at the forefront of research. «SKYROCKETING» 3000 visitors a day is usually considered a high number, but one Tuesday last November a record 4447 visits were registered. This is probably a record! This is how the visits were spread out that day. In order to achieve our vision for we aim to: Be visible Deliver quality services Leverage technology Interact with the organization and society Chat Every weekday between 10:00 and 15:30 a librarian is available on chat. Since we started this service in 2009 the number of chat sessions has quadrupled from 240 to 1024! 2

STUDENT LIFE Academic achievement is only one of many qualities an employer looks for in a prospective candidate. Personal qualities, experience, volunteer and extra-curricular activity, and international experience all play a part. In order to help BI students achieve these goals several information hubs have been set up in the library International office BI Student Union Student partner Career service have all created their own hubs in open areas in the library. These hubs make it easy for students to discover numerous activities available to them, both on and off campus. 3

SUPPORT/ASSISITANCE AREAS On floor 6 in the library in Oslo a variety of workplaces and a classroom for support services have been set up. The area includes: Open student guidance Open student guidance is a service for new students where they can ask questions about their courses, study tips, or questions about student life in general. The assistants are all students who have already taken the courses in question. The Bachelor department administers the service. Support for finance, statistics and survey programs. This area also hosts support services for Datastream, the statistics software SPSS, STATA and Eviews, and the survey software Qualtrics. The supervisors are all master students, with the Institute for Finance and Institute for Marketing responsible for the service. Support for students in Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger is offered via Skype. «BUNS AND BUSINESS» What? Buns and Business? Learn more about BI and enjoy a Norwegian sweet bun at the same time. The library strives to be a place where colleagues can meet in an informal setting, while at the same time be inspired academically. The library hosted two book launches in In September Yngve Kveine presented his debut novel Lyden av Asfalt and in November Espen Andersen presented his book Teaching with Cases, co-authored with Bill Schiano. These book launches were a great success and we would like to host similar arrangements in the future. 4

Boklansering CONTACT LIBRARIANS Did you know that there is a contact librarian associated with each of the eight research departments at BI? This assures us that faculty are acquainted with the library s information resources and services. All new faculty and PhD students are offered an orientation about the library s services with emphasis on their speciality. We provide support according to need, database searching assistance, and can answer questions about copyright, Open Access etc. Contact librarians also assist the Research management department with tasks related to research support. Contact with faculty is important for us in order to develop our library services. We communicate closely with faculty before acquiring new database subscriptions in order to ensure that our subscriptions are relevant both for BI s researchers and for teaching. Do you know who has published what, and where? The library promotes BI faculty s publications with exhibitions in the library, posters and bulletins on the digital billboards in each department. OPEN ACCESS Open access to published research is a policy supported by political authorities and major research funders and is something BI aims to facilitate. Since 2008, BI has had its own institutional repository, BI BRAGE, where researchers can archive and make accessible copyright cleared versions of published work. BI BRAGE is also an open archive for other publications at BI research reports, working papers, dissertations, master theses etc. BI established its own publishing fund in This newly established fund covers article processing charges, or publication fees, in quality controlled open access journals. Academic publication is undergoing huge changes, and publishers need to find new funding methods. Many journals are now published openly on the internet, and some publishers cover their costs by charging publication fees. The BI publishing fund enables BI researchers to choose where to publish regardless of costs. The library administers both BI BRAGE and the publication fund, in close collaboration with the Research Management department. 5

Biblioteket i BI Stavanger STAVANGER BI Stavanger began building a new library in Walls were set up, along with a glass door with the library s word cloud, a library counter, book shelves and a self-service loan machine, and a newspaper corner. Friday 9 May we had an informal opening for students and faculty at BI Stavanger with BI Stavanger director Ragnhild Wiik holding a short welcome speech. Autumn 2014, the library was officially opened. The library invited librarians from the region to a network building seminar. Associate professor Bernt Rønningsbakk spoke on networking and the library director Dagmar Langeggen spoke about the library model of the BI Library. The library has been actively in use since its opening. Feedback from students and faculty has been positive, and work with developing both the facilities and the services at BI Stavanger continues in ORIA A PLANET? Oria is not a planet in the universe, but rather our new library search tool. In December 2014 we moved from a beta version of ORIA which searched only electronic sources, to a full version which also includes printed material. Much work was put into interface design and mobile device compatability. In connection with the launch of the full version a new search box was developed for our homepage. Adaptations and changes can now be done by the library to a much greater degree than before. The IT department finalized work with FEIDE and students and faculty are now able to log onto ORIA with the same username and password used for other services at BI. In 2015 we will continue to integrate ORIA with the new library system ALMA (launches January 2016). Once ORIA and ALMA are working together, performance will improve. We are also in contact with our users in order to collaborate with testing and user surveys. 6
