Lesson 6: The Great City of Babylon Today Frightened by the torture that she experiences, they will stand far away and cry out, "How terrible, how terrible it is for that great city, the powerful city Babylon, because your judgment arrived in a single hour!" (Rev 18:10 ISV) The ancient city of Babylon was once a great city. Babylon s city was depicted as one of the most extravagant word powers in history in the Bible (Daniel 2). Once this great city ruled over ten dynasties in the surrounding regions. Today, due to years of plunder, neglect, and conflict, the Babylon of old lies in ruins today as pictured below. Figure 1 "Babylon, 1932" by American Colony (Jerusalem). Photo Dept., photographer. - United States Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs division under the digital ID matpc Babylon Back Then Ancient Babylon was an extravagantly great city. God portrayed the city as a gold head in Nebuchadnezzar II s dream, indicating Babylon was very grand. (If you like, read the Matthew Henry s commentary on Daniel 2 at for more information on this fascinating topic!). Babylon had existed for many years prior to Nebuchadnezzar s dream. However, it had become particularly wealthy, powerful,

and influential under this king, Nebuchadnezzar II, who was the founder of the Chaldean empire (or the New Babylonian empire). Nebuchadnezzar had played a significant role in beautifying ancient Babylon. He had built a city that covered over 200 square miles, with 250 watchtowers. The walls around the city were 87 feet thick, wide enough for two 4-horse drawn chariots to pass. Four-story houses, covered with blue, yellow, and white enamel, commonly lined avenues. Parks and gardens were popular and widespread in the city. There was an extravagant 30-foot wide bridge going over the Euphrates in the middle of the city. A 15 x12 wide tunnel under the river also connected the two banks. The Ancient Babylonians worshiped over 4,000 gods. These gods were thought to need many temples and shrines. Thus, Babylon had 53 temples and 1,327 shrines. Babylon s famous ziggurat rose 650 feet into the air (this is pretty tall, considering there are only around 70 buildings in the world today over that height). The ziggurat was probably a temple to the resident god of Babylon, Marduk. Some think this was the famous Tower of Babel mentioned in the Bible. Nebuchadnezzar II knew the city he had built was incredible. He boasted, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built, (Daniel 4:30 KJV). But, he mistakenly thought it would last forever (Isaiah 47:8). Soon God humbled him by making him live like a wild animal for seven years. He was also given the mind of an animal. After seven years, the king recovered and gave the glory to God (Daniel 4). How Babylon Fell An engraving on an eye stone of onyx with an inscription of Nebuchadnezzar II."Nebukadnessar II" by User Hedning on sv.wikipedia - Anton Nyström, Allmän kulturhistoria eller det mänskliga lifvet i dess utveckling, bd 2 (1901). Licensed under Public Domain via Commons. Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. It shall never be inhabited... but wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures. (Isaiah 13:19-21 KJV) As prophesied in Isaiah 13:19-21, Babylon fell. It was a gradual process, starting with the Persian king Cyrus. He conquered the neo-babylonians (the Chaldeans) in 539 BC. Babylonia was conquered with little or no resistance from the people. Then the Persian kings, Darius I and Xerxes also destroyed Babylon slowly. Darius settled a sizeable rebellion by Nebuchadnezzar III during his reign. The Babylonians had locked their rulers, the Persians, out of the city and taunted them for a year and a half as Darius tried to retake the city. And as punishment for a rebellion, Xerxes (Darius son), in 484BC, upset many Babylonians by seizing a golden statue of Marduk (also called Bel, Merodach) and melting it down. Consequently, the Babylonians rebelled again and were crushed afresh (in BC).

When a new city was built across the river from Babylon, only a little ways away, many of Babylon s residents deserted to the newer, more comfortable city. By the first century BC, few residents were left in Babylon. Mankind had all but left Babylon. As residents left, animals began inhabiting the ruins in Babylon, and Babylon turned into a hunting park. By AD 1200, the ruins themselves had created a strange chemical reaction with the soil so that few plants were able to grow among them. Babylon became a foul-smelling place to visit, inhabited by wild beasts and too many scorpions and poisonous snakes for people to even visit. I read this account on Christian Assemblies International: Dr. C. Hamlin, an American missionary in Constantinople, tells of this incident: "The ruins of Babylon abound in game, and I once engaged a sheikh and his group to take me there for a week's shooting. At sundown, the Arabs began to strike their tents ready to leave. I went to the Sheikh and protested, but nothing I could say had any effect." Babylon today "It is not safe," he said, "No Arab has ever seen the sun go down on Babylon!" Babylon is a two-hour drive from Baghdad. Because of Babylon s rich history, the Iraq government had been hoping to revive the interest in ancient Babylon. It has cleaned up Babylon a little and opened the site to tourists. Indeed, a renewed Babylon would likely bring in a lot of revenue for the poor government. But, while the site has been opened, it has drawn relatively few people, despite its beautiful views and rich archaeological history. The site of ancient Babylon still shows signs of attempted renovation by the late dictator Saddam Husain. But Saddam s improvements were mostly careless, and it s hard to know if Saddam appreciated ancient Babylon for its history or only for its worth as a possible tourist attraction. "Saddam Hussein 1979" by INA (Iraqi News Agency) - Dar al- Ma'mun. Licensed under Public Domain via Commons. Saddam plundered the city of many valuable remains but then began trying to archaeologically renovate it. Most agree his renovations were a spectacular failure. In the 1980s, he began building a replica of Nebuchadnezzar II s palace, on top of the ruins of the old palace. Like proud Nebuchadnezzar II, Saddam wrote his name on many of the bricks he used to rebuild the palace, writing, "This was built by Saddam, son of Nebuchadnezzar, to glorify Iraq." 1. Why would Saddam have thought this about himself? (HINT: read and watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goejmrzfulc. Please use extra care to view this video on the full screen setting as there are vulgar comments beneath the video.) SchoolhouseTeachers.com note: Parents should closely monitor children s use of YouTube and Wikipedia if you navigate away from the videos and articles cited in these lessons. We also

recommend viewing the videos on a full screen setting in order to minimize your students' exposure to potentially offensive ads and inappropriate comments beside or beneath the video. After the Gulf War (1991) Saddam began excavating the old city. But, he soon got bored waiting for the excavations, so he flattened 90% of it, and made a replica on top. This horrified many historians because the replica was built so poorly that it began to crumble in only a few years. Soon Saddam began building his own palace on top of the Babylonian ziggurat. His new palace was built more solidly and with much more extravagance. It had gold toilets, crystal chandeliers, and intricately carved doors. Even so, he only spent one night in it. Soon after the dictator was thrown out of power, locals stripped the temple of its riches (including the gold toilets) and left graffiti in its place. Saddam's Babylon Palace Saddam Hussein was eventually executed by hanging, after being convicted of crimes against Iraq s people, especially the murder of 148 Iraqi Shi ites in retaliation for an assassination attempt toward him. The subsequent government videotaped his execution and released the video to the people. It showed him being led to the gallows and ended with Saddam s head in the noose. He was buried in Iraq. But, what happened to Saddam s palace? When US forces occupied Babylon in 2003, they occupied Saddam s palace, which was opposite the Nebuchadnezzar II s old palace. These US troops left their own unique branding on the ancient city of Babylon. Today, basketball hoops can still be seen attached to ancient Babylonian remains (there s even one pictured in

the palace!). Razor wire left by the military also prevents visitors climbing over the 2,500- year-old lion statue which represents the ancient city (Dan 7:4). Fast Fact The old Babylonians were known as the Babylonians; the new Babylonians were known as the Chaldeans. After old Babylonia was conquered by Assyria, Babylon payed tribute to the Assyrians. After a while it became stronger and conquered Assyria again. This new and stronger Babylon people were called the Chaldeans. It gets a bit confusing, but if you remember this, it should help! Questions 1. How many square miles did Babylon cover? 2. How many watchtowers did it have? 3. What river ran through Babylon? 4. How many gods did the Babylonians worship? 5. How many temples did Babylon have? 6. What was a ziggurat used for? 7. Who was the famous Babylonian king mentioned in this lesson? 8. What was the above king famous for? 9. What is Babylon like today? 10. Where is Babylon in relation to Baghdad? 11. What happened to Saddam Hussein after he was deposed? 12. Was King Nebuchadnezzar a Chaldean or not? Hint: find out when Nebuchadnezzar lived. Then find out when the Chaldeans lived.

Answers: (Question in the text itself) 1. A: In a way, Saddam is a descendant of Nebuchadnezzar. But, Saddam is also thought to have modelled a lot of his life from the ancient king s life. For example, Nebuchadnezzar II was a great architect and builder; Saddam likewise wanted to be a great builder and architect. Saddam built more in Babylon than anyone has built since the fall of the kingdom.) (Questions following the lesson) The Euphrates River 4. Over 4, It was a temple used for worship. It was also for observing the stars. 7. Nebuchadnezzar II 8. Building the hanging gardens of Babylon 9. Like the Bible says: It shall never be inhabited... but wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures. 10. Two hours away, 85km south of Baghdad 11. He was publicly executed by hanging. 12. Yes. Nebuchadnezzar was the founder of the Chaldean (New Babylonian) empire.
