1 Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh Upgrade Overview Overview Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh is the latest release of Symantec s awardwinning Norton AntiVirus product line. This document explains the features and benefits of upgrading from previous versions of Norton AntiVirus, including added capabilities provided by LiveUpdate and Norton Scheduler 2.1. Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh is completely compatible with Mac OS X 10.3 ( Panther ) and previous versions of Mac OS X to version Norton AntiVirus 7.0 for Macintosh is included as a separate installation option for OS 9 users on the installation CD. Relevant hardware requirements can be found later in this document. This document is most effective when used to support other marketing communication tools focused on Norton AntiVirus 9.0 Macintosh. 1

3 Though the number of significant Macintosh viruses and Trojans reported on Mac OS X (and no recent outbreaks on Mac OS 9) are few, antivirus protection is more important than ever. Corporations will often utilize Macintosh and Windows machines in their workforce, and while it is important that the Macintosh systems be protected from Macintosh-specific viruses, it is also imperative they do not spread PC viruses and worms to Windows machines across company networks. Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh scans and removes PC viruses from attachments and files, creating a more secure environment. Recently a proof-of-concept Trojan horse called MP3Concept generated a great deal of interest among the press. The file looked like a sound file, but was actually an application as well. This file basically highlighted a known aspect of Mac OS X, and was never actually in the wild. However, the media attention given to this threat was significant, with stories on CNN and newspapers around the world. Given this reaction, it is perhaps more likely than ever that Mac OS X-specific viruses and worms may be released. In May of 2004 another threat was revealed, the MacOS.MW2004.Trojan. This Trojan horse disguised itself as an application titled Microsoft Word 2004 OSX Web Install, and was apparently being distributed on peer-to-peer networks like Hotline and LimeWire. Once launched in Mac OS X, the Trojan attempted to delete the user's home directory and all of its contents. The actual files deleted depended on the user and file permissions, but this was another sign that Macintosh users are more prone to attacks than before. Symantec believes that individuals who access the Internet should be protected from attacks and given the proper tools to make sure their machines do not inadvertently spread malicious files. Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh is one such solution. 3

4 Key Features and Benefits The following features are specific to Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh and are not available in previous releases. Features Find and repair Windows/PC-compatible viruses. This is the first version of Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh to include this feature. Download more efficiently. LiveUpdate only downloads the virus definitions that customers need. Virus definition updates are delivered on a weekly basis, or more often as threats appear. Previous versions required the user to download the complete virus definitions file each time they were updated, creating longer download times and frustration for dial-up users. Place suspicious files in Quarantine for isolation and future action. Scan and detect viruses in archives. Auto Protect can detect viruses within file archives, including.zip,.tar and.sit files. Benefits Protects against the most common viruses, and prevents users from sending a PC virus to friends or colleagues. After the first major virus download, users only need to download additional virus definitions not on their system, rather than having to download one large file that contains every virus definition. This saves time, and makes it easier to stay up-to-date with current definitions. Ability to isolate suspicious files in order to find out more about them, like whether or not there is a virus, rather than allowing it to remain active on a system. Once the file is placed in quarantine, users can contact the source of the file to verify its legitimacy.
