Ability to Output Layers to Photoshop Files Adobe Illustrator 8.0 now lets users preserve layers when they save Adobe Illustrator files as Photoshop files (PSD). With this capability, users can create superb graphics, save the files in PSD format with layers intact, and then open and manipulate these layers in Photoshop with outstanding results. Users can also drop these layered Photoshop files into Adobe ImageReady software and then animate the layers to produce animated GIF files for Web sites. In addition to opening files created in any version of Illustrator (including version 1.0), Illustrator users enjoy the following file format support: Graphics import Adobe Illustrator 8.0 can open any Adobe Illustrator (AI) file, EPS file, PDF file (one page at a time), and Photoshop 2.5, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 file. In addition, version 8.0 can open or place Macromedia FreeHand 5.0, 5.5, and 7.0 files and CorelDRAW 5.0, 6.0, and 7.0 files, as well as files saved in DXF, CGM, CMX, Amiga IFF, BMP, Filmstrip, GIF89a, JPEG, MacPaint, Kodak Photo CD, PCX, PX1, PXR, PNG, TGA, and TIFF format. Macintosh versions of Illustrator can open and place PICT files, while Windows versions can open and place EMF and WMF files. Graphics export Adobe Illustrator 8.0 exports AI, EPS, PDF, Amiga IFF, BMP, GIF89a, JPEG, PCX, PSD, PXR, PNG, TGA, and TIFF files. Macintosh versions can export PICT files, and Windows versions can export EMF files. Users can also drag and drop Illustrator graphics into other Adobe programs, such as PageMaker or Photoshop, or into other third-party applications, such as Microsoft Word. Text import/export Adobe Illustrator 8.0 imports and exports the following text formats: ASCII, MacWrite, RTF, Microsoft Word, and Corel WordPerfect. Productivity Tools for Meeting Impossible Deadlines with High-quality Results Like many people, Adobe Illustrator users constantly balance the need to meet hard deadlines with the desire to produce the highest quality results. For users looking to increase productivity and billable time without sacrificing standards, Adobe Illustrator 8.0 offers some compelling answers. This version delivers a number of powerful productivity features from a new Actions palette that automates routine tasks to the Links palette, which helps users monitor and update linked files. Actions Palette Adobe Illustrator 8.0 software introduces an Actions palette, which resembles the popular Actions palette first introduced in Photoshop 4.0. This palette includes a variety of preset actions that automate common illustration tasks and save valuable production time. With these preset actions, users can, for example, produce 3D buttons; create vertical text with a forward-casting shadow; add a drop shadow; emboss an object; apply a wood grain, stucco, metal, or other texture; and make a template with the click of a mouse. With the Actions palette, users can record and play back a series of steps to automate common illustration tasks. The Actions palette also includes preset actions that can instantly add special effects to artwork.

4 In addition, users can record actions of their own and then apply them to any illustration file. Actions can automate the application of fills and strokes, gradients, swatches, text attributes, and object transformations. Users can assign actions to function keys for easy access, and share actions with colleagues to streamline work processes across a group. Links Palette One of the keys to producing great final output quickly and cost effectively is making sure that linked files are included in the handoff to a service bureau or prepress house. To make this process easier, Adobe Illustrator 8.0 has adapted the Links feature from Adobe PageMaker. Through a handy new Links palette, users can monitor key status information for links (such as path and file type), update layouts by linking to new files, embed files, and check whether linked files are present before handing off to a service bureau. With the new Links palette, users can monitor their linked images with complete ease. Users can, for example, check the status information on any linked file by choosing a command from the Links palette popup menu. 4 The links information dialogue box The Links palette Adobe Illustrator also handles relinking files to new images with intelligence. If users apply transformations, such as rotation or skewing, to linked images and then relink those images to new files, Adobe Illustrator retains the exact transformations. For example, a user could link a Photoshop file to an Illustrator 8.0 file, rotate it in the layout, and then swap the Photoshop file for another one. The Illustrator file would retain and apply the rotation to the newly linked file. Smart Guides When precision matters, users can turn to the new smart guides in Adobe Illustrator 8.0. These guides appear temporarily to help users move, align, transform, and even create shapes and paths with the utmost exactness. Users specify whether smart guides appear, and they can set preferences for their behaviour. Now users can sample text attributes and apply them to other text objects. Enhanced Eyedropper and Paint Bucket Tools Adobe Illustrator 8.0 extends the capabilities of the eyedropper and paint bucket tools. Now users can sample text attributes with the eyedropper tool and instantly apply them to other text with the paint bucket tool. Users retain complete control over which text attributes they sample and apply. By default, the eyedropper and paint bucket tools pick up and apply fill, stroke, character, and paragraph attributes. Live Blends Adobe Illustrator 8.0 offers users flexibility and control in creating and editing blends. Now blends are live, which means that users can edit them freely. In particular, users can: automatically create blends along an editable path. (With other illustration programs, users have to perform the extra step of joining the blend to an editable path.) move, delete, resize, or transform any object in the blend. add, remove, or edit anchor points on the blend path to refine its shape.

5 5 change the colour of any object in the blend. blend an unlimited number of objects. create blends using different types of objects, including paths containing gradients. These capabilities give users complete freedom in working with blends in their illustration files. Illustrator automatically blends objects along a path. Users can then modify the shape of the path with complete ease. Navigator Palette When users are working on complex illustration files, they often want to zoom in on key areas without having to scroll or wait for the screen to redraw several times. That s why Adobe has adapted the Navigator palette (also found in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere) to Adobe Illustrator 8.0. This palette makes it a breeze for users to instantly zoom in on any area of their illustration and then quickly zoom out again to see their edits in a larger context. With the Navigator palette, users can even specify a precise zoom of up to 6400 percent with decimal point accuracy to hundredths of a percent. The Navigator palette is also useful for quickly moving around a large illustration. The Navigator palette makes it a breeze for users to zoom in and out of complex illustrations. Free Transform Tool Adobe Illustrator 8.0 software now offers a free transform tool, which consolidates familiar scaling, skewing, rotating, and reflecting functionality in one tool (this tool is similar to the one in Adobe Photoshop). With the free transform tool, users can save time performing multiple transformations, while exercising fine control over the results. Users can even use this handy tool to simulate a 3D perspective with their objects.

6 Improvements to the Overall Interface One of the most important aspects of updating a software program is listening carefully to what customers want. Adobe Illustrator 8.0 delivers more than 100 user interface enhancements that directly respond to customer requests. For example, the program now: Automatically adds colour swatches to the Swatches palette when a file is imported. Merges identical spot colours automatically when importing images. Provides popular left-handed keyboard shortcuts for hiding, showing, locking, unlocking, moving, and copying elements. Includes fill and stroke controls on the Colour palette. Automates the creation of nonprinting, locked template layers. Italicises nonprinting layer names, so users can identify them as such at a glance. Adds a new Small Palette Rows command to the Layers palette, so customers who work with large numbers of layers can maximise the number visible at any one time. The Layers palette now gives users a choice about how many layers appear at once. Users simply select the new Small Palette Rows command to display more layers at one time. 6 New Registration Colour Adobe Illustrator now lets users define a registration colour that automatically prints on all separations. With this ability, users can print crop marks and other printer s marks on every printing plate. Bold New Creativity Tools that Help Users Express their Ideas Adobe Illustrator 8.0 delivers powerful creativity tools that users won t find in other illustration programs. These tools include two new live brushes, called the Art brush and the Scatter brush. Both of these tools let users paint a graphical object along a path the Art brush arranges the graphical object evenly along a path, while the Scatter brush applies the artwork randomly using settings that the user specifies. The new gradient mesh tool instantly blends multiple colours in any direction to create more painterly colour effects than ever before possible in computer artwork. Adobe Illustrator 8.0 also introduces to two new live brushes, the Calligraphic brush and the Pattern brush, which significantly enhance the calligraphic and path pattern functionality in previous versions. Now users can draw editable paths with the Calligraphic brush or paint patterns easily along a path with the Pattern brush. In addition, the Photo Cross Hatch filter debuts in Adobe Illustrator 8.0, giving users the ability to quickly turn scanned photographs into textured sketches. With these creativity tools, high-end designers can present their creative ideas more easily and effectively on screen and in print. In addition, business graphics users customers who appreciate the value of highquality graphics and want help making their ideas stand out can achieve professional-level results with the built-in libraries of predefined brush art.

7 Art Brush Imagine a user creating an eye-catching object in Adobe Illustrator 8.0 and then instantly transforming it into something that can be drawn along a path over and over again. That s the essential power of Art brushes. The object can be anything the user wants for example, a user could draw a leaf for a flower stalk. The user could then drag the object into the Brushes palette and set options for how the object is drawn along a path, including the orientation, scale, and colour of the artwork. With the leaf example, the user would use the Art brush to instantly draw multiple leaves on a stalk, each curving in slightly different ways. Art brush paths are fully editable, so users retain precise control over the all aspects of these design elements. In addition, users can import Art brushes into other illustration files for repeated use. Adobe Illustrator 8.0 provides built-in Art brush libraries, including clip art, tapered strokes, arrows, and natural media brushes that simulate charcoal and oil paint effects. 7 Users can save objects as Art brushes and apply that art to any paths created with the paintbrush, pencil, ellipse, and other tools. Users can then edit the shape of those paths with ease. Scatter Brush The new Scatter brush takes a different approach to arranging Illustrator objects along a path. Once again, users can create any object they want and transform it into a Scatter brush. This time, however, they specify randomisation options for dispersing the objects along a path. Users control the size, spacing, relative dispersion, and more, giving these paths a truly freeform look and feel. This type of brush also takes full advantage of pressure-sensitive tablets, allowing users to achieve different randomisation results depending on how much pressure they apply. Adobe Illustrator 8.0 offers a number of Scatter brush libraries, including leaves, flowers, stars, insects, food, and objects such as balloons, paper clips, and push pins. Scatter brush art The Scatter brush allows users to randomly distribute artwork along an editable path. Users can then reshape, transform, or move that path, and the artwork will reflow along the new path. With these brushes, users can create an object once and use it as a decorative element over and over again. The new Brushes palette lets users define individual brushes for each brush type with complete ease. For example, a designer could define numerous Art brushes that each use a different graphical element or multiple Scatter Brushes that randomise the same graphical element differently. Users can rearrange the brushes in the palette or add and delete brushes at any time.

8 Gradient Mesh Tool One of the great pleasures of software design is introducing an innovative new feature that opens a new world of creative possibilities for customers. In Adobe Illustrator 8.0, that unique feature is the gradient mesh tool, which performs an astonishing task: It instantly blends multiple colours in multiple directions in a single object to create painterly washes of colour. The effect is akin to dropping a dot of watercolour paint on wet paper and watching it spread. However, users have a much finer level of control over the direction, shape, and combination of colours involved in the blend. In Adobe Illustrator 8.0, users create smoothly shaded results by selecting the gradient mesh tool and clicking in different parts of the object to overlay a nonprinting mesh. Each point the user clicks becomes an anchor point from which a colour originates and blends with another colour on another anchor point. The user can specify different tints of a single colour at each anchor point or entirely different colours for each point. The mesh can be as simple or complex as the designer requires to produce the desired effect. The designer also has complete control over the shape of the blend and can manipulate the results by adjusting anchor point handles, adding and deleting anchor points, or using the transformation tools on anchor points. The artwork updates immediately to give designers instant visual feedback. 8 With the gradient mesh tool, users can quickly create complex gradations of colour, such as the blends that give this tulip its shape. While it is difficult to predict all the creative ways that designers will apply this tool, it s clear that it offers: Ease of use. Users can create smoothly blended colours in seconds a process that can be simulated in previous versions of illustration software only by laboriously creating multiple blended objects and overlaying them. Even then, the results are rough and often challenging to print. With the gradient mesh tool, the experience is closer to that of working with traditional media, such as oil painting or watercolour. A completely new style of vector artwork. The gradient mesh tool expands the range of shading, lighting, and tonal transitions that users can create in Adobe Illustrator. In the past, users typically moved their vector-based illustrations to a paint program, such as Photoshop, to create these effects. The gradient mesh tool essentially bridges these worlds, allowing Illustrator users to produce painterly or even airbrushed effects directly in their illustration program. Users create these complex colour blends by laying down a nonprinting mesh, and then specifying the colours that blend between each anchor point. Users control the shape of the blend by pulling out and manipulating the handles associated with each anchor point on the nonprinting mesh.

9 9 Note: It s important to note that there are some clear distinctions between the blends created with the gradient mesh tool and gradients that users create now. For example, gradients can be defined in a palette, stored for future use, and created using colours in any combination of colour spaces, while colour blends created with the gradient mesh tool are unique to particular objects. Small file sizes. The great news is that no matter how complex the artwork created with the gradient mesh tool, it s still vector-based artwork so the file sizes are much smaller than comparable work saved in paint programs. This makes these files easier to transport or store. Outstanding printed results. This new feature is designed to take advantage of the smooth shading support built into PostScript 3 devices, printing stunning results with relatively fast print times. However, it also produces great results on PostScript Level 2 or Level 1 devices. Basically, the smoothly shaded artwork prints as resolution-independent vectors on PostScript 3 devices, as JPEG files on PostScript Level 2 devices, and as bitmaps on PostScript Level 1 devices. (The JPEG file format is specifically designed to handle smooth gradations of colour in photographs.) Improved Calligraphic Brush Adobe Illustrator 8.0 reinvigorates the Calligraphic brush, allowing users to specify that the brush stroke produce fixed, random, or varied widths. (Users can vary the width using pressure-sensitive tablets.) The beauty of this implementation is that Calligraphic brushes now create paths rather than filled shapes, making it easier to resize, adjust, move, and work with them. Users can define any number of finely tuned variations on these calligraphic path types. The new Calligraphic brushes create paths now, so users can resize, edit, and move calligraphic elements more easily. Pattern Brush This brush type replaces the current path patterns feature and offers users an easy way to customise and apply patterns in Adobe Illustrator 8.0 to paths. Users can design pattern tiles to apply to the sides, corners, and endcaps of paths and control how these tiles fit the path (whether they re stretched to fit it or not). Sample Pattern brushes in Illustrator 8.0 include ornate borders, ropes, vines, train tracks, and more. Photo Crosshatch Filter The Photo Crosshatch filter makes it a snap for users to turn scanned photographs into textured or crosshatched sketches like those that appear in the Wall Street Journal. Users simply select an imported photograph, choose the Photo Crosshatch filter, specify options for to how to apply the hatch layers, and instantly produce the sketched result. Users can determine the density, dispersion, thickness, maximum line length, and rotation of the hatch layers. These hatch layers create shaded sketches based on the light and dark gradations within the photograph. Accessible Tools for a More Intuitive Creative Process Adobe Illustrator 8.0 delivers some clever features that make the program easier to learn and more intuitive to work with every day.
