1 European Council of Civil Engineers was created in 1985 out of the common concern of the professional bodies for Civil Engineers in Europe that the Civil Engineers working together across Europe could offer much more to assist modern European society with sustainable designs, practical use of research & development, and economic and well funding structures.

2 OBJECTIVES European Union Promote the highest technical and ethical standards; Provide a source of impartial advice; Promote co-operation with other pan-european organisations in the Construction Industry; Contribute towards professional recognition of qualifications and mobility in the framework of existing EU directives. National Governments and Institutions Advice and influence individual governments and professional Institutions; Formulate standards and achieve a mutual compatibility of different regulations controlling the profession; Formulate standards for a European Code of Conduct of the Civil Engineering Profession and disciplinary procedures applicable throughout the Union. Profession, Related Organisations and Industry Formulate guidelines to maintain and raise standards of civil engineering education; training and professionals competence; Assist in achieving mutual compatibility of Eurocodes, standards and regulations in the related industry; Encourage and improve levels of safety and quality in the industry.

9 ECCE STANDING COMMITTEES OBJECTIVES KNOWLEDGE & TECHNOLOGY Chairman: Asko Sarja Encourage and promote research and innovative technology development in the European civil engineering community; Inform on recently developed innovative technologies concerning civil engineering issues; Inform on research and innovative technology development supporting organizations (especially Framework Programme 7); Reflect research needs and requirements of the profession stemming from the civil engineering practice to the research performers such as universities and research institutes and agencies; Participate in the activities of European organizations in the area of civil engineering research and innovative technology development. PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION & MOBILITY Chairman: Fernando Branco Establish principles of educational equivalence and classification for civil engineering (in collaboration with the Education & Training standing committee); Inform on the principles and standards set by the European Commission concerning professional recognition and mobility; Reflect needs and requirements of the profession as observed in practice to the above mentioned standards; Contribute to the updating of the EU directive on Common European Platform for Civil Engineers and to the development of related projects such as Eng Carta ; Take part in the activities of the European professional associations and to collaborate with them.

EDUCATION & TRAINING Chairman: Iacint Manoliu Establish the principles of educational equivalence and classification for civil engineering; Follow developments in the civil engineering curricula and educational systems in the world; Reflect educational needs and requirements of the profession resulting from the developments in civil engineering practice to the educational institutions and to the policy making bodies; Participate in the activities of the European associations and projects concerning civil engineering education.
