1 Query Tool (FMS) Introduction FMS (Facies Management System) is the geological and geophysical database that is the depository for all the data accessed by the FMB. The database is built on the MS Access platform to take advantage of the relational database structure and simplicity of data distribution offered by this database technology. The data model includes a comprehensive suite of geological and geophysical raw, analytical and interpreted data types. Pertinent to the FMB requirements are the following data types 1. Geophysical Data Seismic navigation Seismic traces Time depth pair tables Synthetic seismograms 2. Geological Data Well header details Wireline logs Well stratigraphic picks Litho-stratigraphic schemes Sequence stratigraphic schemes Chrono stratigraphic scheme Main environment of deposition library Depositional facies association library Lithology, cements and modifier libraries Beyond the immediate requirement of the FMB, the data model for FMS also allows for : FMB2 User Manual Query Tool (FMS) 1

2 Seismic interpretation (horizons and faults) Pressure data as formation test results. Geochemical data Source maturity data Temperature data Fluid inclusion data Fission track data Conductivity data Radioactivity data Core analysis data Query Wizard The Query Wizard enables the user to query the FMS database in order to establish trends that exist within the data. To use this Wizard the following 4-step procedure needs to be followed: 1. Dataset Selection Select the Database you want to query. Select the Well set you want to query. Use the Wells Manager to establish a subset of wells from the database, or use the preset WholeList if you want to include all wells. To create a new well list, tick the small check box to the left of the New Well List option, enter a name for your new well list, select the wells, and then save your list. The Advanced Wells Manager will allow you to select your well set according to parameters that you define. So, for example you limit your well set to wells with a particular stratigraphic interval preserved, or wells with particular wireline log curves. Establish your parameters, then select Run. If you are satisfied with the result save your well list using Save List As. However, if you would like to refine your well list further by establishing a second parameter select Use Result. This will create a temporary well list templist on which to run your second query. This procedure can be repeated to create a well list which meets very specific criteria. After completing your select queries, save your well list. 2. Query Selection Select the Query you want to run. A range of pre-programmed queries can be run, as shown in Figure 1. 3 Figure 1 - Query Wizard, pre-set queries Depending on the query you have selected you will need to define your query parameters. So, for example, if you have selected a Depth Structure Query, you will need to select the Stratigraphy type, and then the Stratigraphic interval. Choose how to output the result selecting a value from the combo box called Visualization Mode (F). For example, we can get a simple report just choosing option None, or alternatively we can plot the result of our query in form of a map, selecting Mapping Tool. With all data but the Borehole Logs, there is also a report on the bottom (M), showing the results in form of a spreadsheet. In addition some labels (L) reveal how many wells have been enquired and, among them, which wells gave us as a result. 3. Data Categorization Categorization only applies to Map Tool and Chart Tool. The Categories tool enables you to set the parameters that will determine the visualization properties of your data. It adds a further level of sophistication to your query. Each category is more accurately considered as a Group of category conditions. These groups can be added to or modified to suit the user requirements. To edit the user categories select edit, then double-click the category group you would to edit to reveal the category conditions or Keys. Select the condition you would like to edit, then select Modify. Then set the condition parameters and Apply. To insert a new category group: 1) Select New Group. 2) Insert a Group Name 3) Select the Default Colour A Default colour must be defined because it represents the colour that will be shown when the category defined is not present in a Well. 4) Select the tables and fields which contain the category values you are defining. Between one and three conditions or Primary Keys can be defined for each category condition. Click on OK. 5) Define a Category Name (such as Deep, Intermediate or Shallow) within the Group now created. Select the Group and click on the New Category button. Insert the category name and define a colour for this category. Specify the Unique Identifiers (or PK) by pressing the button Set PK and opening the window Insert PK. Set the conditions for the category. Multiple conditions can be set in this way. FMB2 User Manual Query Tool (FMS) 5

6 4. Data Visualization The FMB2 is equipped with four visualization tools: Map Tool, Chart Tool, HTML File and Text Report. Select the Visualization tool for your query (Note: some query types cannot support all visualization modes) Map Tool functionality is considered in a separate User Guide section. Text Reports are simple ASCII files which can be saved, and imported into 3 rd party applications such as MS Excel. For Chart Tool the following options are available: Van Krevelen Plot, XY Scatter Plot, XY Compare Plot, Line Chart, Bar Chart, Histogram, Ternary Chart, Pie Chart. Once the chart is generated, a right mouse click on the chart will reveal the chart properties where the Legend, Axis, Scales, and other display parameters can be modified. The Export Tab will enable you to save the Chart in the following formats: Bitmap or Metafile image TeeChart file (*.tee) Text file XML HTML Table MS Excel file. The Chart can also be printed or sent as an attachment via your default program. Export Wizard This Tool facilitates the export of FMB data for loading into 3 rd party applications. Currently, the following data types can be exported: Stratigraphic data: Chrono- Litho- and Sequence stratigraphy Lithological Data: Lithology, Cements and Modifiers Facies and Environment Data Bathymetry Data Wireline Data (LAS format) To use the Export Wizard 1. Select the Database and Well List (or define a Well List if necessary) 2. Choose the Export Type. For some queries you will also need to select the export parameters. For example, when exporting Chronostratigraphy you can select Era, System, Series, Stage, Substage or all of the above. FMB2 User Manual Query Tool (FMS) 6

7 3. Select Report The data will appear in the Report Window. 4. To Save this data, choose your format options and select Save As. The following formats are supported a. *.txt (comma or Tab separated) b. MS Excel To Export LAS files, select the Database and Well List, then Export LAS. An option screen will appear, where you can select the curves you would like to export, the export units, and export format and location. SQL Tool Under Development This will enable the user to build bespoke queries to interrogate the database Petroquation Under Development This tool will enable Petrophysical Analysis.
