4 WHAT IS NEUROLINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING (NLP)? - Bandler and Grinder: the study of the structure of subjective experience and methodology and innovative technology - Dilts and DeLozier define NLP as a behavioural science providing an epistemology, a methodology and a technology - Dragovic defines NLP as an approach to development of personal and professional practice through modelling.

5 WHAT IS CAREER? - an individual's course or progress through professional life - a string of our decisions that takes us from formal or non-formal education to our profession - Carrera, carrus or carraria (lat.) = Rat race, wheeled vehicle, road

12 MODELLING AND SYSTEMIC THINKING SYSTEMIC THINKING IS: - complex way of thinking in mutual feedback among actors and factors involved, understanding that any change will change the whole system. NLP seeks to find the leverage, i.e. the element where desired change of the system is achieved most efficiently.

15 Information gathering vs. Coaching Information gathering focus Coach: What would you like to discuss today? Client: I m having trouble with my supervisor at work. Coach: What kind of trouble is it? Client: She supports other employees in going over my head in getting things approved. Coach: Give me an example. Client: Well, yesterday Mary went to my boss and asked my boss, Dan, to approve the new course she wants to teach next term. Dan did it even though that is my responsibility because I am Mary s direct supervisor. Coach: What kind of course was it? NLP Coaching interaction Coach: What would you like to focus on today? Client: I m having trouble with my supervisor at work. Coach: What makes this an important issue for you? Client: I m feeling undermined by her. Coach: How do you experience that? Client: She approves requests from employees who report directly to me. Coach: What is the key thing you would want differently? Client: I want my authority recognized. Coach: If your authority were recognized then how would you feel? Client (pauses to think) I would feel less resentful.
