Some of the things discussed were the importance of practice and training. I explained that training is what you receive from your instructor and practice is what you must do on your own. As a student you have to commit yourself to your training and your practice. A student also has to have the ability to stick to it or persevere. There will be days when you do not feel like going to class and even more often not feel like practicing. Overcoming these feelings are as much a part of your training and practice as techniques, forms and sparring.

4 4 Resolve Cont: Overcoming these feelings are how you train your mind to focus, persevere, and ultimately to triumph. Think about New Year s resolutions. People resolve to lose weight, run a faster mile, lift a heavier weight, read a book, work as a volunteer ----and the list goes on. However, by the end of January, the resolution is forgotten and the rest of the year proceeds with no change being made. The root word for resolution is resolve. This word can be defined as making a decision to be totally and utterly committed to obtaining an objective. It can also be defined as a character trait that someone possesses. That trait, resolve, is a persons unshakable commitment to a decided upon course of action, belief or objective. Martial arts training can help a person to develop resolve in themselves. This can only be accomplished by training and practicing---- even when you do not feel like it. By the act of making yourself go to class and then practice what you have learned regularly (daily) you overcome the mind and body s inclination to remain in their comfortable place where they are not challenged. Yes, martial arts training and practice is a physical and mental challenge. If you commit yourself to this challenge you will not only learn a system of self-defense, you will develop a trait in yourself that will make it easier to accomplish any goal that you set for yourself. Accept the challenge that you have set for yourself. If you have not set a goal in the martial arts allow me to suggest this one---- attain the Black Belt. It is attainable, and the way to it has a wealth of hidden benefits. Self Defense by Doug Turner There are many reasons why an individual may choose to learn a martial system. Physical health, mental health, spiritual growth, self-defense, cultural study and socialization are a few of the most common. In looking for a system, the individual should take into account the systems design and the instructors focus. A person is able to lift weights or take aerobics if they wish to work on their physical health, spiritual growth and to socialize. One may take a language course at a college or school to study a culture and increase their mental health. The study of the martial arts is unique in its capacity to teach selfdefense. It has been my experience that selfdefense is what attracts most people to the study of a martial system. I ve not studied the martial arts for very long, approximately sixteen years, but in that time I ve discovered that selfdefense is taught in a very limited capacity. We are taught how to physically prepare ourselves for conflict. We are taught how to form our hands, feet and minds into weapons. The majority of martial arts instructors teach how to become skilled at conflict. Little is done to curb violence so that conflict can be avoided or never encountered. The leading cause of death in the workplace is not accidents. The leading cause of death in the workplace is violence. 1 in 3 women will be raped. The perpetrator is more likely to be someone that they know. I am not sure of the statistics, but the vast majority of all murder is at the hands of someone that the victim knows. Why is it that most instructors teach you how to be prepared for random encounters: Encounters that only comprise a small percentage of the violence that a person is likely to face? BEGINNING RELATIONSHIPS It is a sad fact that there are some stereotypes that are completely true. A woman rarely says what she means. A man rarely hears what he doesn t want to hear. When you place those two together you wind up with abuse, stalking, rape and murder. It is a tragedy that you can t say that a man or woman who commits domestic violence is a deviant. A deviant is defined as one who differs from the norm. I know very few women who have not been physically or verbally abused in one form or another. This must stop! You may ask how this applies to you since the majority of the people in your class are men.

5 5 Self Defense Cont: This issue applies to both men and women. Women must learn how to defend themselves from those that abuse them and the men need to learn how to treat all people with proper respect and restraint. Have you ever read a romance novel or watched a romantic movie? Whether this type of entertainment is a product of our culture or influences our culture, it shows that some drastic changes need to occur in the way men and women think. The basic plot of a majority of these stories goes something like this: A guy meets a woman and becomes interested in having a relationship with her. The girl is not interested in a relationship and is often involved in a relationship at the time. The guy then stalks or otherwise harasses the girl and causes dissention between her and her boyfriend. The girl finally becomes interested in the guy and they live happily ever after. What does this teach people? It seems that romance has become a game. Women are afraid of speaking their mind because it will be seen as rude. Men don t understand what is said because the woman is too afraid of being rude that she doesn t say what she means and so he thinks that she is just playing the game. This needs to stop! Both men and women need to learn how to be assertive. Say what you mean and mean what you say. I am currently studying the Indonesian language and I found it very interesting that the word for NO is rarely used because it is an absolute negative. It means that it didn t happen in the past, that it isn t happening in the present and that it won t happen in the future. That is what NO is supposed to mean in our society. When the word NO has been said, do not expect for it to be negotiated because there should be no negotiation. If you are a woman and a guy is interested in a relationship with you or doing something with or for you that you are uncomfortable with, say NO and mean what you say. Do not allow that to be negotiated with. If that guy persists, do not give in because he is demonstrating that he does not respect you. He is making it clear that he doesn t respect your decisions or what you think. If you give in and do negotiate an absolute then you are showing that you can be manipulated with persistence. Which would you rather: A guy thinking that you are a rude and disrespectful person for denying an invitation to a relationship, or would you rather get involved in a relationship and being abused and used because it doesn t mean anything when you say no. Do not play games with the guys. Women are taught to be coy and to appear off limits to a guy in order to make themselves more desirable to him. When they do that they are only enforcing the fact that NO doesn t mean NO and can be negotiated with, which in turn makes guys demonstrate unwanted persistence. Guys, don t show your lack of respect for the person you are interested in by ignoring the word NO or similar signs that she is not interested. If you truly care for this person then you will respect her wishes and put her own desires above your own. Understand that she knows best for her and makes her own decisions. ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS I ve heard that many spiritual leaders advise abused women to stay in the relationship. I find this disturbing. There is no reason to stay in a relationship if you are abused. I repeat, THERE IS NO REASON TO STAY IN A RELATIONSHIP WHERE YOU ARE BEING ABUSED. Last week a friend of a friend was murdered by her husband. Everyone knew that she was in an abusive relationship and advised her to get out of the relationship. She decided to ignore their advice and remain with the man because her child needed her. Let me put it simply. Would you rather be there for your child somewhere else or would you rather not be there at all where the child no longer has anyone?

6 6 Self Defense Cont: When you advise someone to leave an abusive relationship, make sure that you understand that the majority of domestic homicides occur because restraining orders or divorce papers have been filed. These legal procedures make the abusive party feel as if murder is an option because s/he no longer has anything left to lose. When the decision to escape is made, make sure that the escape is thorough. Do not let the abusive party know where you are and don t go stay with a family member or with someone who is known to be associated with you. Deliver the divorce papers through a second or even third party. You are better off in a new and strange environment than in the familiar but dangerous environment of an abusive relationship. SHOW RESPECT TO ALL Violence generally occurs because someone feels as if they were shown a general lack of respect and consideration. When you file a restraining order, ask for a police visit or call a couple cronies to threaten the person, which damages a person s ego. This makes violence more acceptable in their mind. Treat all people with consideration but don t give them so much attention that you attract problems. Just as in dealing with a beginning relationship, make your point clear and then be absolute about it. If you are not interested in a working relationship, friendship or romantic relationship, make that clear and break off all contact. If you say, I don t wish to speak to you again and speak with them again saying the same thing over and over, you are demonstrating that you are willing to speak with them again. Break it off completely. Respectfully make it clear that you are not willing to communicate with them again and then don t. They will continue to write and perhaps even threaten for a while, but eventually they will leave you alone. If their actions elicit a response from you, they will look for more. Give them an inch and they ll try to take a mile. Don t let them. Be assertive. Don t meet him or her with hate and anger. If you do you will be playing by their rules. Just as in a physical conflict, you don t wish to play on their playing field. You need to take them out of their environment and be what they aren t. Be respectful, be considerate, be resolute and assertive and you will be able to avoid most conflicts.
