2 Brief outline (executive summary) Dr. habil. Balázs Székely (47) was born in 1965 in Budapest, Hungary. After his military service he has started his university studies at Eötvös University, Budapest, as student of geosciences in In the third year he has chosen geophysics for specialization and additionally astronomy as a second master curriculum. He received his MSc in Geophysics and MSc in Astronomy in In the same year he joined to the Space Research Group at the Department of Geophysics of the Eötvös University as a junior research fellow financed by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA TMB), from 1995 on as a research fellow. He became involved in teaching at the university already before graduation, in 1988, since then he has been teaching informatics and GIS for various student groups. From 1991 on he has been taking part of holding field practices for geophysics (and later geology) students. From 1988 on he has been active in curriculum development (mainly in that of MSc in Geophysics). From 1995 on he has been acting as supervisor of diploma theses. From 1989 on he is taking part of scientific projects funded by third parties, later he became acting as principal investigator (PI) in his own projects. His research areas include: geophysical surveying of archaeological sites ( ), whistler (magnetospheric phenomenon, electromagnetic waves generated by lightnings) research ( ), crop yield estimation and forecasting based on satellite imagery (1995-), creation and analysis of digital terrain models (DTMs) for various purposes (1991-), later geomorphometry. With his colleagues he introduced the use and evaluation of DTMs in the field practice of the geoscience students (from 1992), including TEMPUS JEP students. Along with the transition towards the PhD system, he became a PhD student in 1997, from 1998 on he is at the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, University of Tübingen, Germany under the supervision of Prof. W. Frisch. He did his research work in the framework of SFB 275, studying the uplift of the Eastern Alps based on geomorphometric methods. He received his (summa cum laude) PhD degree in 2001, and he continued to work there as postdoctoral researcher. From 2002 on he has been studying white marble provenance questions concerning artefacts of the Eastern Mediterranean Antiquity. In 2003 he received a György Békésy Postdoctoral Fellowship, therefore he returned to Hungary to the Department of Geophysics at Eötvös in mid During the fellowship he established a working group of students dealing with various questions of digital geomorphometry, tectonic geomorphology, and surface processes modelling. From 2005 on he is acting as supervisor of doctoral students, from 2006 on as senior research fellow. In 2004 he has been appointed to coordinate the development of the new (Bologna-style) curriculum development for the BSc in geoscience for the Faculty of Natural Sciences. He has edited and partly written the 642-page-long application document for the accreditation of this curriculum at Eötvös, submitted to the National Higher Education Accreditation Board (MAB). Some of the new subjects in this curriculum were his inititative, and he has been responsible staff member for a few basic subjects and practicals. In 2005 he initiated a project at the Hungarian Space Office to support the development of a space science/remote sensing master curriculum at Eötvös, he has been appointed as project leader, later responsible coordinator that has been accredited by MAB as specialization (remote sensing and space research) of MSc in Geophysics both in Hungarian and in English. 2

3 From 2007 on he is at the Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (IPF) of the Vienna University of Technology (Austria) studying laser scanned topographic data for geological and microgeomorphic purposes in the framework of IPF s Christian Doppler Laboratory. Later he became involved in the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on ESA Mars Express project team in which IPF is a co-investigator (project Co-I: Prof. J. Jansa) studying Martian geomorphometric problems. He initiated a project in 2008 that has been successfully developed to carry out repeated laser scanning of the Doren (Vorarlberg, Austria) landslide, to develop methods for evaluation of mixed point clouds derived from airborne (ALS) and terrestrial (TLS) laser scanning. In December 2009 he has been appointed to the scientific coordinator of the scientific conference held as part of the 2010 Centenary Celebrations of the ISPRS in Vienna. Parallel to this activity he continued the teaching and supervising activity at Eötvös, where he completed his habilitation in From September 2010 on he has been appointed as associate professor at the Department of Geophysics and Space Sciences. In 2009 he has initiated a session at the Geomorphology Division of European Geosciences Union, since 2010 then he is acting as a (co-)convener. Later he became a co-convener of a volcano-geomorphic session in the GMPV Division. In 2011 he has joint to the ChangeHabitats2 project, an EU FP7 IAPP (Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways) project; the main goal of the project is the integration of laser scanning and hyperspectral imaging for evaluation of Natura 2000 sites: from the remotely sensed data (laser scanned point clouds and derivatives, hyperspectral data cubes) habitatrelated properties, conditions, changes are derived and evaluated. In this framework he has spent two months in Summer 2011 at Opole, Poland at an SME project partner. He has proposed as integration solution of point clouds as voxel data. Dr. Székely is a member of the editorial board of Archeometriai Műhely and Geodetski Vestnik, regularly reviews submitted manuscripts for various journals and evaluates project proposals. He is member of the Hungarian Chamber of Engineers, Association of Hungarian Geophysicists, European Geosciences Union, ASMOSIA, Österreichische Geologische Gesellschaft, American Geophysical Union. He is native in Hungarian, speaks English and German, and understands partly French, Spanish and Russian. 3

15 Curriculum development Participation in the Bologna process (a) Participation in the nationwide introduction of Geoscience BSc in Hungary According to the Bologna concept, all new BSc specializations had to be introduced nationwide through consortial proposals of involved universities. I returned from Tübingen at the latest phase of this process and I contributed with some proposals. (b) Participation in launching the Geoscience BSc at Eötvös University I coordinated and managed the introduction of Geoscience BSc at Eötvös University, which a compound curriculum of respective parts of the preceding Master (5 year) curricula of Astronomy, Cartography, Geology, Geophysics and Meteorology. I designed most of the 7 specialisations within this curriculum and managed the preparation of the accreditation volume. Furthermore I proposed numerous new elective courses, contributed to new compulsory courses, initiated the geography specialization within the Geoscience BSc (there is a Geography BSc including Physical Geography and Economical Geography). I introduced a new elective Tectonic geomorphology field practicals in the second semester. I am also a member of the organizing committee of the University Open Day, that is to inform pupils of secondary schools about the possibilities at Eötvös University including some limited media presentations. (c) Participation in launching the Geophysics MSc at Eötvös University I was also involved in the preparation of the accreditation volume of the MSc in Geophysics curriculum of Eötvös University presented to the Hungarian Board of Accreditation for Higher Education (MAB). I also proposed to introduce the English version of this curriculum including Space Science and Remote Sensing. (d) Questionnaire survey of student satisfaction and opinion At the end of 2007 I initiated and regularly repeated a questionnaire survey on student satisfaction of BSc curriculum and some selected subjects. The results were presented in a special educational session of the European Geoscience Union General Assembly together with E. KIRÁLY (SZÉKELY & KIRÁLY 2008). The project is on-going with B. POLONKAI. New courses in PhD school 15

16 I introduced two new courses in the PhD School of Geoscience: a Digital elevation models in geoscience and Surface processes modelling from the academic year of 2005/2006 on With Dr. G TIMÁR we introduced another course entitled How to publish? from the academic year of 2008/2009 on. Establishing cooperation between Eötvös University and University of Vienna From 2007 on, as an initiative of PhD student András ZÁMOLYI, Eötvös University and University of Vienna (Austria) established a contract ( Cotutelle de thèse ) concerning a common PhD curriculum and research plan for A. Zámolyi, including research at both institutes. Co-supervisor in Vienna is Prof. Dr. Bernhard GRASEMANN. New courses introduced in the classic (5 year) curriculum Two new courses were introduced from 2004/2005 on for student of Geography, Cartography, Geology, Geophysics, and Environmental Science: Digital geomorphology and Surface processes modelling A general course has been introduced from 2004 on: How to write a thesis? Organization of project-oriented international field practicals In the framework of project OTKA TS44765 Development of integrated research methods of geophysical surveying of Quaternary environment conditions we organized a new, project-oriented international field practical for MSc students of Geophysics from 2004 on together with the Leeds University, cooperating with Prof. Gregory N. HOUSEMAN ande Prof. Graham STUART. My idea was to formulate small geoscientific problems for the students that they solve with various measurements and observations (gravity, magnetics, land and lake seismics, geoelectric sounding and multielectrode surveying). This cooperation is still running, in the first years it was held around the Lake Balaton (including lake seismics), in 2008 I proposed to move it to the Neusiedlersee and this year it was held in SW Hungary. The students are typically very satisfied with the practical because the are really involved in research. Some of them tend to continue on the research and they were motivated to present their results at the EGU General Assembly in Vienna. Some of them continued as PhD students in similar research fields. In 2008 Austrian contribution completed the activity, colleagues from the University of Vienna defined various research projects W of the Neusiedlersee, while the other students measured the tectonic geomorphic features of the Seewinkel that we previously find in a high-resolution LiDAR DTM.
