Insight pre-integrator integrator Software supplier ARCHITEcT oem AUTOSAR Integration Platform Synchronize project partners successfully AUTOSAR has successfully been established today as a standard for ECU series development. Complex project workflows with distributed software suppliers generate numerous interfaces that must be managed and validated at a central point. This is why Berner & Mattner introduced their AUTOSAR Integration Platform (AIP) for the efficient implementation of distributed development processes in AUTOSAR projects. The starting situation is often similar in many projects with AUTOSAR: numerous artefacts arrive in different formats and are used in different versions; the project data also frequently has to be handled by a variety of software suppliers (OEM, Tier1, multiple Tier2s), often at different companies. To be able to synchronize the work of distributed project partners using an effective tool, Berner & Mattner developed the AUTOSAR Integration Platform (AIP). After successful rollout for a customer, the platform allowed significant reduction of the existing coordination and quality problems, and the long-term efficiency of the AUTOSAR project was increased. Cloud, Continuous Integration and Knowledge Management The keywords behind the concept of the AUTOSAR Integration Platform are Cloud, Continuous Integration, and Knowledge Management. The underlying ideas of these approaches are in- 04

Automotive 15» The AUTOSAR Integration Platform takes on a central role in the synchronization of interfaces. Based on it, rights and role management as well as release, quality, and configuration management can be implemented efficiently for the AUTOSAR workflow. Berner & Mattner is a qualified solution provider for the implementation of ECU development with AUTOSAR. The AUTOSAR & Virtual Integration Competence Center bundles the company s know-how. Thanks to our active participation in boards, such as AUTOSAR, COMASSO, and ARTOP, we can offer advanced innovation on current developments in the AUTOSAR standards. tegrated into a series of functions and paradigms in the platform for optimum coverage of the requirements of distributed development processes. These include: Rights and role management: Protection of the intellectual property of individual partners from access by competing parties in the project Release management: Specific release of individual software deliveries and controlled visibility of versions or content within the overall project Quality management: Automated Quality Gate to check completeness and consistency of the delivery package Configuration management: Support for the development process using customized workflows and functions Standardized, centralized, and highly flexible AIP is based on familiar technologies and platforms, such as Subversion and Trac. The use of AIP is governed by mutually agreed on and documented rules. Important information and documents are thus available centrally for all partners. The platform also allows role-based rights management at project level with fine-grained configuration options. Company-specific extensions permit platform use independent of the specific company infrastructure, too. This is possible because all operations can also be performed using the web interface client-side software installation is no longer needed. Automated integration testing For the optimum implementation of AUTOSAR projects, AIP directly includes an automated integration test tool. The content of the uploaded object files the translated target code is verified using the AUTOSAR interfaces previously agreed on at design freeze. Global symbols are also tested. The socalled AVERT check can thus already enable meaningful decisions about the linkability of the object at check-in time. Clear reports allow developers to check the status of their deliveries immediately, and it is only possible to proceed to the next integration step after this test has been passed. This avoids added effort, long correction processes and is saving time. AIP platform for highly integrated projects Based on open technologies and powerful extensions, AIP provides a powerful support platform for highly integrated AUTOSAR projects. Using effective protection of know-how and targeted testing instruments, the platform represents a valid component for long-term project success with numerous development partners. 05

Insight Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Smart vehicles with Berner & Mattner Interview with Bernhard Müller-Bessler, head of the Wolfsburg ADAS Competence Center The development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) continues to accelerate. Vehicle manufacturers continue to prove their innovative capacity impressively with new advanced driver assistance functionalities. Berner & Mattner has positioned itself as a partner for OEMs in this area, offering solutions tuned to the development of complete software packages for advanced driver assistance systems. Bernhard Müller-Bessler, head of the Wolfsburg ADAS Competence Center, explains services, projects, and challenges in this interview. For the driver, ADAS makes mobility more convenient, in turn for manufacturers and suppliers, a lot gets more complicated. How do these systems change the development process? The development of advanced driver assistance systems is currently undergoing a change from monolithically functional systems to an overarching ADAS platform that combines different functions. That of course opens up new options. For example, a software module for path planning in the context of autonomous driving can be developed and integrated independently of the sensor systems and hardware used. But there are also entirely new challenges in terms of the technology, the security of components and the overall system and of course, the distribution of roles from an organizational standpoint. So the coordination and overall validation of ADAS functions in close collaboration with OEM and suppliers is getting more and more important. What services does Berner & Mattner offer for the development of advanced driver assistance systems? ADAS development is engineering that cuts across many disciplines. We support customers with all the necessary services that software functions for advanced driver assistance systems require from the first idea to series production. We offer the complete development package as well as unified software solutions from a single source: Starting with the specification of new functionalities and architectures, to the modelling of appropriate frameworks and algorithms, through to the construction and operation of test systems. With a camera HiL we developed in-house, for example, we can test camera functionalities even under extraordinary conditions for vision systems, reducing the need for prototype testing. What else is special about this ADAS portfolio? Together with our Competence Centers for Safety & Systems Engineering, Requirements Engineering & Validation, and Software Quality, we make use of experts from a wide variety of areas for ADAS development. From this broad-based position, our capacity to cover the requirements of an extremely connected ADAS landscape is ideal. We can also manage the implementation of extensive work packages and coordinate the areas of functionality, system, and component development: a task we can handle due to our many years of competence in OEM and Tier1-specific processes. If necessary, we can also use specific develop- 06

Insight SUPPLIER MANAGEMENT FOR SAFE ELECTRONICS ISO-COMPLIANT EVALUATION OF ECU SOFTWARE Software-controlled functions in the vehicle, such as advanced driver assistance systems, are getting more and more powerful, resulting in significant potential risk in case of failure. Berner & Mattner, as part of supplier management, monitors compliance with safety-critical development and testing standards for an OEM and its suppliers. Potential weaknesses can thus be identified early in the supplier process and corrected. The responsibility for the safety of these functions ultimately always lies with the OEMs, even if they cooperate with numerous suppliers during development. Specifications as well as a hazard and risk analysis, from which safety goals and a functional safety concept can be derived, are the central starting point for early anchoring the topic of safety in the supplier process. The OEM also obligates its suppliers to apply standards like ISO (functional safety) or ISO (Automotive SPICE), as well as other possible development guidelines. COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF SOFTWARE SAFETY INTEGRITY As part of the supplier management for OEMs, Berner & Mattner provides comprehensive monitoring of compliance with these safety goals and standards for ECUs in the domains of chassis and advanced driver assistance systems. For the independent completion of necessary assessments and reviews at the suppliers, the team brings well-founded experience in the development and testing of embedded systems to the table, as well as with all aspects of functional safety and systems engineering. The safety engineers implemented close monitoring and checking of work at many points in the development chain. This permits OEMs to evaluate work results from the suppliers continuously at the relevant milestones, even during development. The task list therefore also includes developing the safety requirements for specification documents and extends to the evaluation of software development in terms of the safety integrity level (ASIL) and assessment of test specifications and test coverage. This is complemented by consulting together with supplier and OEM, in order to design and improve the safety mechanisms. SAFETY ASSESSMENT BASED ON STANDARDIZED QUESTIONNAIRES One significant aspect of supplier management is the performance of assessments. The objective: to ensure that the project has been carried out according to the standards and that safety measures are technically adequate as well as sufficient. The OEMs then receive corresponding release recommendations and a detailed list of findings. These assessments cover all phases of software development and requirements according to ISO Our engineers rely on an extensive standardized question catalog that allows them to achieve reproducible results as well as comparability over multiple projects. The supplier will answer some of the questions in writing at the start of the assessment. Over the course of several in-depth meetings, the reviewer inspects internal project documentation to be able to assess the fulfillment of requirements. He addresses all significant requirements for functional safety of the software, broken down by phase and aspect of software development (e.g. architecture, requirements, module design, verification, and validation). EXAMPLE: STEERING FAILURE The example of a steering ECU illustrates which technical problems have to be solved and how professional supplier management increases quality and safety. The starting situation: in heavy vehicles, steering can cause severe danger if the software crashes while driving on a curve so that steering support suddenly fails. There are two possible ways to master the error: Either veri- 08

Automotive 15 fication that the system is free of runtime errors that could lead to crashing of a software component, or implementation of a restarting approach so that in case of error all operationally required tasks can be started again in a sufficiently short time. Both approaches require careful, ISO-compliant error analysis, verification methods and residual risk assessment as integral part of the supplier s development process. Especially new technologies require practical interpretation of the ISO standard to ensure that complete documentation and high product safety can be provided. EXPERIENCE IN COMPLEX CASES The safety engineers at Berner & Mattner have supported many German OEMs and suppliers with current, comprehensive expertise in supplier management for safety-critical development. Especially in complex cases where there is some dispute, professional supplier management can negotiate between OEM and supplier and come to a technically adequate, standard-compliant solution. The result: higher quality of development, and a higher quality product. Berner & Mattner handles all the processes of supplier management with comprehensive experience in systems engineering, development and testing of embedded systems, and functional safety. 09

Insight Automotive Engineering Center in Romania DEVELOP EFFICIENTLY WITH INTERNATIONAL SOLUTIONS The Automotive Engineering Center (AEC) is the center for engineering services of the Assystem Group in Romania. About 350 international engineers work here for European OEMs and Tier1s. With comprehensive engineering expertise, international structure, and high cost efficiency, the AEC is perfectly suited for the specific challenges of the European automotive industry.» the Automotive Engineering Center Philippe Haffner Director of the Automotive Engineering Center in Romania With full service product engineering in the fields of mechanic, hardware, software, and supplier management, Assystem provides its automotive clients the advantages of a globally acting company. The services of the Automotive Engineering Center in Bucharest can be integrated cross-company, permitting projects to be realized successfully with particularly high cost-effectiveness. ON-SITE AND GLOBALLY NETWORKED Assystem is locally present in all important automotive locations in Germany, France, England, Spain, and of course Romania. That enables us to work closely on projects on-site and connect ideally with OEMs and Tier1s through short communications paths, explains Philippe Haffner, Director of the AEC. The Automotive Engineering Center lets our clients integrate our international corporate structure and back office engineering from Romania seamlessly as needed for example for projects of larger scope. The project leads in the front office coordinate all the participants located in different countries. This systematic connection of front and back offices is what sets us apart. The client gets all services from a single source and benefits from engineering competence at the best possible price. OEMs like Renault and Dacia, or PSA-Peugeot, have already successfully implemented long-term projects with AEC. 12

Automotive 15 Founded Location Employees Portfolio 2002 Bucharest (Romania) 350 Back office engineering for automotive development Since 2012, Berner & Mattner has also been on board, among other things handling extensive ECU tests on the HiL test bench for an OEM with German/ Romanian teams. SECURITY AND QUALITY As a prerequisite for implementing distributed development processes safely and reliably, Assystem has established high European quality standards in AEC, especially in terms of data protection and confidentiality. This includes, for example, defined access rules for employees and the spatial separation of project teams. Internal as well as on-thejob training are more ways to guarantee that quality guidelines and qualifications are used and implemented uniformly throughout the company. All AEC employees go through a two-month introductory program in the Assystem Automotive Institute and are trained at front office locations. SYMMETRICAL COMMUNICATION In addition to uniform standards for project management and security, the topic of communication is one of the most important keys to successful international cooperation. In support of this, we have rolled out technical tools, while also ensuring that our organizational structure is oriented towards close collaboration between the AEC and our front office colleagues. Team leads from Germany and France regularly also work in the AEC and accompany their teams onsite, emphasizes Philippe Haffner. As a multinational company, Assystem also places particular value on minimizing language barriers. In multinational teams, English and French are the corporate languages in the AEC and special training can be organized if others are needed. Especially for the Germanlanguage regions, however, the barriers for personal coordination with clients are particularly low: AEC employees can be on-site in Germany after just two hours of flight time. 13

Insight OPTIMIZED INTERFACES DIAGNOSTICS FOR INFOTAINMENT SYSTEMS Connecting an MP3 player to the infotainment system, activating route planning, or connecting a telephone through the Bluetooth interface: for many drivers, numerous infotainment components are just part of the basic functionality of their vehicle today. Berner & Mattner can offer a high level of expertise and powerful tools to verify diagnostic functionality in the area of infotainment since 2008 with comprehensive tasks in diagnostics for AUDI AG. New advanced driver assistance functions and technologies offer even more safety and comfort. However, they also influence the complexity of today s generations of infotainment ECUs and the scope of diagnostic functions as well as the diagnostic testing needed. A glance at the functional scope of the MIB High infotainment ECU from AUDI AG clearly shows this trend: among other things, in addition to audio and media functions, it integrates a 6-channel DSP (digital signal processor), the operation of new driver assistance systems, and a telephone function using the LTE 4G mobile phone standard. During manufacturing, infotainment functions are parameterized on a highly variable basis using diagnostic services to customize them to the market and vehicle configuration. THE EXPERTS IN INFOTAINMENT DIAGNOSTICS For about six years, Berner & Mattner has been realizing for AUDI AG diagnostic services as an independently realized working package. The task is to test compliance with protocols (UDS) and to validate the desired functionality for diagnostic services (such as WLAN, language settings, telephony, and online and navigation services). The task and competence spectrum of the diagnostic team includes another area tangent to infotainment: the creation and maintenance of test specifications, like the planning and execution of tests, is handled entirely independently. In particular the preparation of diagnostic test specifications and coordination with different suppliers require well-founded know-how and a methodical approach. For example, all testers are additionally ISTQB Certified Testers. DITES TEST AUTOMATION FOR DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTIONS For verification of functional diagnostics, Berner & Mattner uses the DITES diagnostic test bench, which was developed together with AUDI. In addition to partly automated test cases, the C#-based test scripts also include fully automated test cases for protocol compliance. This allows the test bench to implement test requirements efficiently as needed. An example test script illustrates the process perfectly: WLAN is activated automatically and compliance with the protocol is 16

Automotive 15 Safer, more comfortable, more comprehensive: new functions influence the complexity of infotainment ECUs as well as the number of diagnostic functions that have to be reliably verified. checked. A user confirmation is then used to determine whether the menu has appeared on the HMI interface. The script then asks the WLAN player to connect. After the test ends, DITES automatically creates a test report. With the growing number of diagnostic functions and suppliers, however, a complete test run after each individual software delivery is no longer economically feasible. For this reason, Berner & Mattner has introduced a four-level test concept that combines assurance of diagnostic quality with efficient testing. DIAGNOSTIC COMPETENCE AT BERNER & MATTNER Berner & Mattner is a competent partner for the management of all your diagnostic needs, offering many years of expertise. Certified employees, systematic, multilevel testing processes, and in-house development of diagnostic tools ensure high quality and efficiency in a quickly growing diagnostic environment. Boards REGULAR MEMBER OF THE WI-FI ALLIANCE In automotive electronics, smartphones, tablets, and notebooks will soon be able to use not only Bluetooth but also Wi-Fi as an additional, faster transmission option. As a recognized participant in the Bluetooth SIG, Berner & Mattner is now also involved in the standardization of automotive Wi-Fi applications. As a regular member of the Wi-Fi Alliance, Berner & Mattner brings many years of expertise in the use of Wi-Fi technologies in the vehicle to the table. 17

Insight V2G RESEARCH PROJECT SMART CHARGING PROCEDURE FOR MOBILE ENERGY STORAGE How can electric and hybrid vehicles become a future part of a smart electrical distribution network, a smart grid? A powerful vehicle-to-grid (V2G) interface and intelligent charging procedures are decisive factors in the operation of such structures. Batteries can be charged on a load-dependent basis, for example, and used as energy storage, then feed their energy back into the grid during period of peak load. Berner & Mattner played an important role in the EU PowerUp V2G research project as a development partner of DENSO AUTOMOTIVE Deutschland GmbH, and was involved in the implementation of the prototype. oem Denso others The goal of the PowerUp research project was to implement a prototype meeting the specifications of the V2G architecture harmonized with existing smart grid structures and including dynamic changes in charging priorities. The development of test cases to validate and guarantee interoperability with ISO/IEC standards was also part of the project, which was scheduled to last two years. Two OEMs had provided two vehicles with DC and AC charging procedures. Berner & Mattner supported DENSO AUTOMOTIVE Deutschland GmbH as development partner in charge of the software for the central ECUs, the charge controlling ECU in the vehicle, and the charging station ECU. A general reference implementation of the relevant standard ISO (Vehicle-to-Grid Communication Interface) was already available to the team in advance as a software library. It was adapted specifically to the DENSO prototype ECU used, and extended with use cases to be implemented, including changes to the charging profile made by the smart grid itself ( renegotiation ). Since both ECUs represented the central components of their own subsystems, numerous interfaces also had to be implemented and tested a task for which test tools developed in-house were deployed. Thanks to test procedures that accompanied development, many error sources could be detected early on. The number of costly integration tests for the entire system was significantly reduced. In June 2013, the project was successfully concluded with a demonstration of the implemented use cases, and received an excellent evaluation from the responsible certification authorities. The results were then used in additional DENSO projects, and will also be reflected over the longer term in international standardization. 18

On the grid side, the charging station ECU communicates through the GSM connection of a smart meter with the smart grid back-end. The ECU receives the charging profile from the back end adapted to user preferences and current grid utilization. It also controls a charger integrated into the charging column in the DC-charged vehicle. In the AC-charged 1 vehicle, an on-board charger controlled by the vehicle ECU is used. 1 AC charging means that alternating current is transferred at the interface between charging column and vehicle, which is then converted into direct current within the vehicle. + More information: 19

Insight research InTeLekt TESTING AND SIMULATION FOR BETTER ELECTRIC VEHICLES In electric vehicles, power modules regulate the electrical power flows between the electrical machine, the battery, and the on-board electronics. In everyday operations, these power modules are exposed to high electrical and mechanical loads that, combined, represent significantly limiting factors in terms of reliability, safety, and service life. The consortium project InTeLekt Integrated Testing Environment for Power Electronics under the lead of the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability will increase the reliability and safety of power modules in electric vehicles by developing a better understanding for these influences and deriving optimization measures. In this context, the Berner & Mattner team will provide modules for the causal chain from inverter component failures to undesirable reactions at the vehicle level (hazards, failures). The team will also develop a simplified simulation model that will reflect the behavior of the electric powertrain sufficiently accurately to be able to validate the effects of these errors as well as the effectiveness of diagnostic and protective measures in simulation. The project was created by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research as part of the IKT 2020 Research for Innovation grant program. locations EXPANSION OF THE AUTOMOTIVE COMPETENCE CENTER IN COLOGNE Berner & Mattner has expanded its Automotive Competence Center in Cologne. The Cologne subsidiary, which has existed since 2009, has moved one house down the street and now has significantly more space available for the development and validation of advanced driver assistance systems. 21 Automotive 15 testona AUTOSAR, MATLAB AND BOUNDARY VALUE ANALYSIS In its latest version, TESTONA provides extended functionality for the systematic design of test cases. Oriented towards requirements in the automotive sector, it integrates an AUTOSAR interface, while the MATLAB import function simplifies testing in the context of model-based development and a boundary value analysis wizard also offers extended support. TESTONA from Berner & Mattner is the leading tool for systematic test case design in the automotive industry and beyond. Specifically for the automotive industry, the AUTOSAR add-on module is a significant simplification for interface and integration tests. Users can import all SWC ports and have test cases generated automatically for a function or for multiple functions together. That means: lower programming costs, maximum reusability of data, and high flexibility, for example when test interfaces change. For model-based software development, TESTONA also permits just as simple an import of MATLAB models. Especially for large models, this really highlights the advantages of automatic test tree generation. The user also has the option of showing the models in different structures and details. For example, he can also import the IN/OUT ports and only has to subsequently enter values. Boundary value analysis is also frequently an important aspect of testing. The newly integrated boundary value analysis wizard systematically goes through all the steps for this test aspect. From the test results, corresponding suites can then also be set up for automatic test execution. + More information about TESTONA, the online shop, current training, event schedules and webinars can all be found at: Products MESSINA 3.9 ETHERCAT AND FMI FOR TESTING DURING DEVELOPMENT Model-based testing of ECUs from model to HiL test bench. Interregional engineering and competence centers support these on-site teams as a back office. Our Automotive Engineering Center in Romania can also be involved as needed, for example for larger projects or for development that is subject to particularly high competitive pressure. One of the most important aspects of our new organization, however, is that we are able to connect transversal services of Assystem across all divisions. Competences from divisions, like Aerospace and Industry, thereby are also included in the Assystem Automotive SBU portfolio. That allows us to realize powerful global solutions for our clients while guaranteeing optimum implementation of specific requirements on-site, emphasizes Roch Thaller. 22

Automotive 15 Press REPORTS CONNECTED IN THE CAR NAVIGATION SYSTEMS WITH GREAT VISIBILITY Vehicle navigation systems that send road users on similar routes and therefore often straight to the next obstacle are still the norm. However, Berner & Mattner shows that the future belongs to innovative navigation system solutions that take dynamic real-time traffic trends into consideration, enable Car-to-X networking and also meet the requirements of the e-mobility generation. ATZ magazine (4/2014 issue) features a current technical article from Berner & Mattner. INTERVIEW WITH JÜRGEN MEYER: GROWTH IN GERMANY Berner & Mattner has been part of the Assystem Group for over two years. AUTOMOBIL-ELEKTRONIK (2/2014 issue) spoke with Jürgen Meyer, Director Germany at Assystem Automotive SBU, about growth and internationalization, functional safety and security, software quality, AUTOSAR, test systems, and the interaction among OEMs, Tier1s, and suppliers. Current technical articles and publications: Training AUTOSAR Berner & Mattner offers continuous practically oriented training modules for different levels on the topic of AUTOSAR. ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level training from Berner & Mattner provides current basic knowledge of software testing, permitting qualification as ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL).
