1 2014 SUMMER SERVE Summer Serve SpiLgrimages are 3-4 week international experiences that are heavily exposure- based and discipleship- oriented in their design. The Office of SpIL (Spiritual Life, Inclusion & Leadership programs) at George Fox University does not seek to implement these trips simply as work projects to solve poverty as much as we are seeking to experience and serve Christ through cultural immersion, global partnerships, and mutual spiritual transformation opportunities for both student- pilgrims, reputable Christian organizations, and indigenous hosts: Loving God & global neighbors in the name and in the Way of Jesus. ROMANIA / MOLDOVA (in partnership with Word Made Flesh communities in both countries) Romania is searching for a new identity amidst its dramatic change from communism to capitalism. Romania suffers economic displacement, the AIDS epidemic, and rising ethnic struggles. Word Made Flesh Romania serves Jesus among the most vulnerable there: at- risk children, street youth and poor families. Christians from Romania and other nations come together from various local churches to seek the Kingdom of God in community. Through ministry on the streets and educational programs at a community center, they strive for a transformed society in which the poor are redeemed and empowered Dates: mid June - mid July 2014 (exact dates TBD) Cost/person: $3600 (includes airfare & in- country expenses) Leader(s): Tami Ankeny SpiL T.A. (trip assistant): TBD ARGENTINA (in partnership with Word Made Flesh community in Buenos Aires) Word Made Flesh Argentina, in collaboration with Argentine partners, is called to serve and discover Jesus among vulnerable children and young adults living in poverty. Through mutual friendships based on love and trust, we accompany our excluded friends in experiencing and knowing Jesus and a fuller life in God. Intentional hospitality is essential to our ministry creating a space for intimacy with God and neighbor. Through Ministry Among Youth in Retiro, Encuentros, Visits/Discipleship, and After- School Tutoring, WMF hopes to deepen relationships by showing God s love and commitment to people through activities, games, Bible Studies, and meals together! Application & References Due: Wednesday, Nov 13, 2013 by 4:00pm 1/2 hour Interviews will be scheduled November 18-21st Our goal is to have the team selected by November 22nd, 2013 The first team meeting will be Tuesday evening, November 26, 2013 (1st deposit due: $180) Fundraising Timeline * If any of these deadlines are missed, student may forfeit participation of trip. ** Funds are non- refundable once donated towards trip, even if student cancels or is removed from participation for whatever reason. I. 5% of the personal budget is to be raised on acceptance of invitation to be participate on Summer Serve trip. (deposit of approx. $180) II. 50% of the personal budget will need to be raised before projected airfare purchase date ($1800 before end of Feb 2014) If this deadline is missed, student will forfeit participation on trip. III. 75% of budget is due before departure on trip ($2700 before May) IV. 100% of individual budget will be due before the next school year s classes begin or the remaining balance must be paid for by student. The majority of the 2014 SS trip budget is raised through mailing out personal appeal letters seeking financial, tax- deductible donations from friends, family, and other supporters of your educational career. The remainder of the budget is raised through your own funds, and through group fundraisers. How prepared are you to raise a trip budget in this manner? 10. Weekly SS team meetings will be held on a day and time to be determined, depending on leader schedules. These weekly meetings will be mandatory for all team members, with absenteeism only excused for illness or life emergencies. There are also fundraisers and other group activities outside of the normal meeting times. If you are selected to be a SS team member, will you give these weekly meetings and other activities the highest priority in your schedule? 11.
