2 Parameters of Service Learning Purpose Statement: Mahopac High School is dedicated to supporting the needs of the greater community. All Mahopac High School students participate in the school s service learning program, which combines community service and academic learning. The program features a reflection component, which asks students to ponder how their service impacts their local community, themselves and the world. Service learning is an in depth experience to prepare students to be lifelong learners, responsible community members and productive citizens. 1.) Students are required to perform 60 service learning hours at a non-profit agency in the community for graduation. Approved service learning agencies are available on our school website. For profit businesses are not permitted for service learning hours. Our recommendation is that you complete 15 hours each year. 2.) Students who complete an additional 240 hours at the same site(s) will receive special recognition at graduation. These students will also be invited to a celebratory ceremony where they may be asked to speak about their experiences. 3.) The steps in completing service learning are as follows: a.) Complete one Proposal Form for each service activity you are interested in and submit to your house secretary. Your house will review your proposal and will stamp Approved if your proposal is accepted. You must receive prior approval before you perform your hours at the site. b.) Perform service hours at the site(s) & complete time log. (Acquire time log from your school counselor or from our counseling we bsite under Service Learning) c.) Complete reflection requirement. d.) Attach your reflection to a letter from your site supervisor on agency letterhead verifying the number of hours you completed at their site. 4.) At the completion of 60 hours, all students must complete a reflection. Students have two options to complete the reflection requirement: a.) Complete Student Reflection Form (You can access this form on our website) b.) Write a poem, song or create a drawing on the impact service learning has had on you. Include a one page summary describing the meaning of your artistic expression.

You do not need to hand in this time log because a letter is required at the end of your experience on your agency s letterhead. Please review Parameters of Service Learning document for detailed information on the new process for completing your service learning requirement. You may give a copy of this time log to your site supervisor so the agency has a record of the number of hours you have accumulated at their site.
