Sheridan, Jr. President & CEO COOPER TRAUMA TEAM HONORED AT SPECIAL EVENT On September 13, more than 200 people turned out for the Tribute to Trauma hosted by prominent state official Lee Solomon to thank Cooper s trauma team for saving his life. Exactly one year after Solomon suffered a life-altering bicycle accident in 2009, he, his family, friends, business associates, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie gathered at the Roberts Pavilion to celebrate his one-year journey back to health and the care provided at Cooper s Trauma Center. Lee understands better than anyone the importance of having a Level 1 Trauma Center close to home, said Susan Bass Levin, President and CEO of the Cooper Foundation. He and his family are grateful to those who helped save his life and wanted to show their appreciation for the Cooper team by holding this event. Lee s courage, spirit and commitment to our community inspire us all to do more. Governor Christie described Cooper as a jewel in New Jersey. The event honored Steven E. Ross, MD, and the entire trauma team for their tireless work saving the lives of patients in South Jersey. Attendees came from throughout the state and beyond, including New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney. The event raised more than $80,000 for the Trauma Department. He recently returned to Cooper for hip replacement surgery. Solomon, a resident of Haddonfield, is now back to his demanding career as President of the N.J. Board of Public Utilities, and spending time with his family thankful for life. Toward the end of last school year, while most students were busy planning pool parties and other summer activities with friends, 12-year-old Jessica Baals from Minotola, N.J., had something else on her mind giving back. In May, Jessica and her friend Isabella Knapp, 12, both students at Notre Dame Regional School, held a yard sale for a school fundraising project. Together, the pair gathered books, toys, and clothes to sell to their local community. All of the proceeds from the yard sale, $120, were donated to The Children s Regional Hospital at Cooper at a special check presentation on August 31, A former patient at Cooper, Baals had two kidney surgeries as an infant and her family credits her recovery to the exceptional medical care of the physicians and nurses at Cooper. Although her home is 45 minutes away, Baal s parents said they would choose no place other than Cooper to receive care. l CUSTOMER SERVICE WORKSHOPS Cooper s Organizational Development and Training Department is pleased to offer two customer service workshops: Care With Compassion and Dealing With Difficult Customer Situations. These two-hour workshops, held at 101 Haddon Avenue*, focus on the use of these skills in the hospital, practice and office environments. Dealing With Difficult Customer Situations October 12, a.m. 11 a.m. From time to time, we all deal with difficult interactions with patients, co-workers and others. This workshop will help you strengthen your communication skills to prevent difficult situations and, when they do occur, to ease them in the heat of the moment to create a great patient experience and to reduce our own stress. 3 SEPTEMBER 2010 Cooper Foundation News 3 Cooper s annual charity ball is now Cooper s annual Charity Ball is a celebration for our physicians, staff, and honored guests to gather to raise money for the hospital and have lots of fun at the same time. The evening offers the opportunity to eat, dance, catch up with colleagues, and meet new ones. The upcoming ball, however, promises to be different. Instead of the traditional dinner dance, expect the unexpected. To begin with, the evening s name has been changed to the Cooper Red Hot Gala. We ve moved the event away from the busy holiday season, and it will now take place on March 26, 2011, at the Hyatt Regency Philadelphia at Penn s Landing. The funds raised at next year s Gala will benefit the high-tech Simulation Lab. The Sim Lab, which features interactive human- and computer-based simulations of ICU, Emergency Department, rapid-response, and other situations, benefits every department throughout the hospital. Staff and physicians who make a pledge as Red Hot sponsors of the Gala will be featured in over the next six months. Stay tuned for updates and profiles on our Red Hot sponsors. 4 4 Cooper Foundation News Michael E.Goldberg, MD THE FIRST SIZZLING RED HOT DOC D r. Michael Goldberg wears many hats. He is Chief of the Department of Anesthesia, a Professor of Anesthesiology, the Director of Operating Rooms, and the Co-Chair of the Curriculum Committee for the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. Dr. Goldberg, however, is so much more than those distinguished titles at Cooper. On any given day he may be writing curriculum for a new course, collaborating with a coauthor on an article, preparing for his next educational presentation, checking in at the ORs, or sitting in on a case conference with a resident. He s also the first physician to throw his hat in the ring to support Cooper s Red Hot Gala on March 26, 2011, which this year will benefit the Simulation Lab. The annual Gala is an opportunity to celebrate the important work being done by all Cooper employees to continually improve health care in our region. Among his many achievements, Dr. Goldberg has authored or coauthored more than 160 articles, abstracts, books, and book chapters. His articles have been published in journals such as Anesthesia and Analgesia, the Journal of Clinical Anesthesia, and Anesthesiology. He also has conducted local, regional, national, and international scientific and educational presentations in his field. Dr. Goldberg is listed in Best Doctors in America and is consistently named among Top Doctors in his field, in publications like South Jersey, SJ, and Philadelphia magazines. One of Dr. Goldberg s most innovative endeavors for Cooper is the Continuing Medical Education program he created and facilitates each year, entitled Clinical Issues in Anesthesiology. 5 5 SEPTEMBER 2010 Cooper Appoints New Chief Compliance Officer Cooper University Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of David Bocian, Esq., as Chief Compliance Officer. He is responsible for all compliance policies and procedures for the hospital, and reports to the Audit/Ethics Committee of the Board of Trustees. Bocian comes to Cooper from the New Jersey U.S. Attorney s Office, where he has served for the past 10 years. Most recently, he was supervisor of the Trenton office, where he managed a team of attorneys, paralegals and support staff responsible for federal criminal investigations and prosecutions. Bocian also held the position of Senior Litigation Counsel and Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Special David Bocian, Esq. Prosecutions Division, where he represented the United States in jury trials, grand jury investigations and pre- and post-trial litigation. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney s Office, Bocian was an Associate, Litigation Practice Group, in the law firm of Patton Boggs, LLC, in Washington, D.C. He is a graduate of Princeton University and received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. l Congratulations to Perry J. Weinstock, MD Gary J. Lesneski, Esq....Perry J. Weinstock, MD, FACC, Head of the Division of Cardiovascular Disease and Director of Clinical Cardiology, on being invited to present the Annual Peter Kuo, MD, Memorial Lecture at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Dr. Weinstock delivered his lecture, Dyslipidemia: Looking Beyond LDL Cholesterol, on September 8, for the hospital s first grand rounds of the academic year. The annual lecture honors the memory of Dr. Peter Kuo, a prominent cardiologist and lipid researcher who was the first Chief of Cardiology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. As this year s invited lecturer, Dr. Weinstock joins a list of past presenters who are internationally known lipid experts. Dr. Weinstock is distinguished as one of only a few hundred physicians nationwide with board-certification in clinical lipidology....senior Executive Vice President/ General Council Gary J. Lesneski, on being named one of the best healthcare lawyers in the nation, in the 2011 edition Steven M. Bromley, MD Andrea M. Russo, MD of Best Lawyers in America, a peer-review publication for the legal profession....neurology s Steven M. Bromley, MD, who will be honored for improving the quality of life for children and adults with neurological challenges, by Bancroft, the Haddonfield-based organization that serves children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism and acquired brain injuries. Formal recognition will take place at Bancroft s annual charity ball next month. Dr. Bromley provides neurology and/or psychiatry services to 15 people served by Bancroft Brain Injury Services....Cardiology s Andrea M. Russo, MD, on being appointed to the Medical Advisory Board of StopAfib.org, a patientadvocacy organization for people living with the most common irregular heartbeat, atrial fibrillation. Dr. Russo joins some of the world s foremost physicians in her role on this advisory board, and she is distinguished as the only physician to be appointed from the South JerseyPhiladelphia area. Robin E. Stutman, MD...Department of Medicine Hospitalist Robin E. Stutman, MD, on being appointed Medical Director for Pavilion 7....Patient Accounts Anthony Dulisse, on being named Cooper University Hospital s September 2010 Employee of the Month....the Cardiology Division and Information Technology (IT) Department, on being recognized as leaders in innovation. Cooper was one of five winners of CMIO Magazine s Health IT Innovation Award (September 2010 issue). The award is a result of Cardiology and IT aligning to use technology to improve workflow, reduce costs and increase productivity. In receiving the award, Cooper was recognized as the first hospital in the nation to implement a system for digital archiving and reading of Echo studies of the heart by cardiologists using a virtualized platform. The system allows cardiologists to access and read Echo studies on-line from any computer in the Cooper network. l
