1 Office of Graduate Education Graduate Council Meeting Wednesday, April 24, :30 p.m. W&J Gilchrist Education and Psychology Complex, Room 305 Minutes The Graduate Council met for its quarterly meeting on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 in Room 305 of the W&J Gilchrist Education and Psychology Complex. The meeting was called to order by Dr. Paula S. Viltz, Chair, at 3:30 p.m. Members Present: (16): Dr. Harry Bass, Dr. Kimberly Fitchett-Bazemore, Mr. Vincent Beamon, Dr. Charles Cherry, Dr. Saundra Copeland, Dr. Farrah Jackson, Dr. Kenneth Jones, Dr. Murel Jones, Mrs. Katie Murray, Dr. Gloria Payne, Ms. Nikita Piercy, Dr. Jeffrey Rousch, Dr. Zenobia Smallwood, Dr. W. Eric Thomas, Dr. Shelia Williams and Dr. Paula Viltz. Staff Present: Dr. Miles Fisher, Project Coordinator for the HBCU Masters Degree Program Grant, Mrs. Amy Jo Spencer, Community Liaison Coordinator for Graduate Education, Mr. George Cox, Recruiter, Ms. Jannety Mosley, Social/Clinical Research Assistant, and Mrs. Ella Holley, Administrative Support Associate. Guest Present: Dr. Kuldeep Rawat, Associate Professor, Department of Technology Minutes of the February 6, 2013 Meeting: A motion to approve the written minutes of the last meeting of the Graduate Council on February 6, 2013 was made by Dr. W. Eric Thomas and seconded by Dr. Harry Bass. The minutes were approved by a majority vote. Spring 2013 Graduate Student Graduates: There will be twenty-eight (28) students completing the Masters degree programs at ECSU in May of This will be the largest class in the history of our University. Nine (9) students are in the Master of Science in Mathematics Degree Program; one (1) student is in the Master of Education in Elementary Education Degree Program; fifteen (15) students are in the Master of School Administration Degree Program; and three (3) students are in the Master of Science in Biology Degree Program. A reception honoring these students will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. in the Ballroom of the K. E. White Graduate Center. Thesis Research Titles: Graduate students completing their master s degree in Biology and Mathematics, are required to submit a thesis in partial fulfillment of the requirements for their degree. Theses titles for the Spring 2013 masters degree graduates in Biology and Mathematics were shared with members of the Graduate Council so that they can be made aware of the type of research our graduate students are engaged in. The theses were well prepared by the students in conjunction with their respective Thesis Committee.
2 Graduate Education Strategic Plan Assessment: The Executive Committee will collect all recommendations from the Graduate Council Standing Committees that were assigned to assist in completing the strategies that are outstanding in the OGE Strategic Plan. The Executive Committee will meet during the Summer of 2013 and review the recommendations submitted by the Committees. Professional Science Masters (Cyber Security): Dr. Kuldeep Rawat, Associate Professor, Department of Technology, shared information with the Council members concerning the Professional Science Masters Program in Cyber Security. The PSM is designed to prepare students with the scientific training necessary to advance and excel in science, while simultaneously developing highly valued business skills. Please visit ( for more information on the PSM Initiative. Dr. Jeffrey Rousch, Chair of the New Degree Proposal Review Committee was asked to meet with his committee members and give recommendations to Dr. Rawat concerning the PSM Cyber Security Program. The recommendations will be submitted based on the criteria for evaluation of new graduate program proposals that have been established by the University of North Carolina General Administration. MBA Degree Program Update: No Report OGE Staff Reports - Recruiter/Retention Coordinator: Mr. George Cox is working on a retention plan for our students once they have been accepted into their respective graduate program. He is reviewing the students who have discontinued the program in the past five years. Mr. Cox reported on the public schools in Hyde, Weldon, Martin Counties, Roanoke Rapids, and Winston Salem State University in his effort to recruit potential graduate students during the March Madness Activities. HBCU Master s Degree Program Grant: Dr. Miles Fisher reported that the HBCU Masters Degree Program Grant is coming to the end of its fourth year at Elizabeth City State University. There are two remaining years of the grant. Fall 2013 is the last semester that qualifying students seeking entrance into the Masters of Biology and Mathematics Degree Programs will be accepted to receive these grant scholarships. Due to sequestration, the grant monies were cut by $25, for the fifth year of the grant. Social/ Clinical Research Assistant: Ms. Jannety Mosley has been working on the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) online graduate application with a target date of Fall The Graduate Education database which is still in the process of implementation, will include, application information, scholarship and grant information, student contact information and information that will provide more efficient service to students. Ms. Mosley is in the process of working on a professional development workshop for the graduate students during our Annual One Stop Event on August 17, Examples of the workshops that students were interested in based on our graduate student survey report include: IRB, Time Management and APA.
3 Community Liaison: Mrs. Amy Jo Spencer and Ms. Jannety Mosley have been working on a qualitative survey for currently enrolled graduate students through phone interviews. Mrs. Spencer is also taking pictures for marketing purposes to include in the video that will be shown at the Graduate Student Reception on Thursday May 9, Mrs. Spencer is working with Dr. Paula Viltz and Dr. Miles Fisher in preparation for Graduate Research Day in Raleigh on May 22, Standing Committee Reports Graduate Faculty Review Committee (Action Item): The Graduate Faculty Review Committee, a Standing Committee of the Graduate Council, met on April 10, 2013 and approved four (4) Faculty Members for Graduate Faculty Status. Dr. John Dixon was approved for Full Graduate Faculty Status. Dr. Adetayo Adedeji and Dr. Linda Woolard were approved for Associate Graduate Faculty Status. Dr. Zenobia Smallwood was approved for Temporary Graduate Faculty Status. A motion was made by Dr. W. Eric Thomas and seconded by Dr. Jeffrey Rousch to certify these Faculty members for membership status with the Graduate Faculty. The motion was approved by a majority vote. Executive Committee: No report. The Committee will meet during the Summer of 2013 to finalize the strategies that are outstanding in the OGE Strategic Plan. Graduate Grievance and Appeals Committee: Dr. John Dixon, Chair of the Graduate, Grievance and Appeals Committee, met with the committee members on April 8 th to discuss recommendations for Strategies 8.1.1, and of the Strategic Plan for Graduate Education. These recommendations will be reviewed by the Executive Committee during the Summer of Marketing and Publications Committee: Ms. Katie Murray, Chair of the Marketing and Publications Committee is currently working with Mr. George Cox, Recruiter for the OGE in developing flyers and brochures for recruitment purposes. Ms. Murray and the committee will meet at a later date to discuss recommendations to address the unmet strategies that were assigned to them listed in the Strategic Plan for Graduate Education. The Committee will also be assisting in designing and formalizing a tagline for the OGE. The tagline we currently use is Graduate Education Matters. Enrollment Management, Retention and Graduation Committee: The Enrollment Management, Retention and Graduation Committee met on April 2, The committee discussed giving a survey to graduate students concerning course scheduling to see if the days/times are meeting the needs of the students. The Committee will discuss the best time to give the survey that will yield the most results. New Degree Proposal Review Committee: Dr. Jeffrey Rousch, Chair of the New Degree Proposal Review Committee met with the committee members April of 2013 to
4 discuss recommendations for Strategies 2.1.1, 3.2.2, 3.3.2, 4.2.3, and of the Strategic Plan for Graduate Education. Those recommendations will be reviewed by the Executive Committee during the Summer of Degree Program Updates Master of School Administration: Fifteen (15) students in the Master of School Administration Degree Program have presented their electronic portfolios in fulfillment of the MSA program. Students defended their portfolio using guidelines that are set by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI). These students are scheduled to graduate in May of Master of Science in Biology and Marine Environmental Science: D E P A R T M E N T O F B I O L O G Y A N D M A R I N E E N V I R O N M E N T A L S C I E N C E F A C U L T Y H I G H L I G H T S G R A D U A T E C O U N C I L R E P O R T A P R I L 2 4, Dr. Eyualem Abebe recently published an article: Neotobrilus nicsmolae n. sp. (Tobrilidae: Nematoda) and Chronogaster carolinensis n. sp. (Chronogasteridae: Nematoda) from Lake Phelps, North Carolina (Journal of Nematology 45 (1): ). Dr. Hirendra Nath Banerjee presented at the 2013 Member-Universities Professional Institute in New Orleans March 24-27, Dr. Banerjee also attended the 2013 AACR (American Association for Cancer Research) meeting on April 6-10, 2013 in Washington, DC along with three graduate students: Deirdre Vaughan, Jewel Medley and Sabrina Sharpe. Swann The Effects of Infusing Creative Writing Into A Sixth Grade Science Curriculum (Dr. Sampson, Chair) Deirdre Nasha Vaughan The Effects of Novel Rhenium Acetylsalicylate Compounds on Different Mammalian Cancer Cell Lines and Primary Cell Lines (Dr. Banerjee, Chair) Master of Education in Elementary Education: One (1) student in the Master of Education in Elementary Education Degree Program is scheduled to graduate in May 2013 and five (5) students are scheduled to graduate in December of Master of Science in Mathematics: Nine (9) students in the Master of Science in Mathematics Degree Program are scheduled to graduate in May of Eight (8) of the students have a concentration in Applied Mathematics and one (1) has a concentration in Education. Approximately, six (6) students are scheduled to graduate in December of Graduate Student Council: The Graduate Student Council purchased new books for the H. L. Trigg Library. The list of books included SAT Preparation, Writing and Math. Approximately, one-hundred eighty dollars ($180.00) were spent on the Library materials. Ms. Nikita Piercy, President of the Graduate Student Council, will be graduating in May of Elections are underway for a new President of the Graduate Student Council for the Academic Year. The new President will be introduced at the Graduate Student Reception on May 9, Certificates of Appreciation: Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to each Graduate Council Member in recognition of their valuable contribution as a member of the Graduate Council. Open Agenda: The Graduate Council, ECSU Faculty and Staff, Chairs and Coordinators, were invited to the Chancellor s Distinguished Lecturer Series Luncheon for the former President of Somalia located in Africa. The luncheon will take place on Thursday, April 25, 2013 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. in the K.E. White Graduate Center The meeting adjourned at 4:45 p.m.
