2 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Department/Division: Reports to: Location: Hours of Work: Direct reports: Job Purpose: Dimensions: Online Development Manager Digital Digital Director London / Wisley 35 per week, Monday to Friday Lead developer x1 Web producer x1 Online assistant x1 Web business analyst x1 (New) To drive the strategic and technical development of the RHS websites and lead a team of internal developers to build, continually enhance and support the sites, ensuring developments are delivered on time, to budget and specification. Provide technical leadership working closely with the editorial and marketing teams and other key stakeholders across the Society to develop the best possible platforms for RHS content, whilst maintaining the highest standards of quality. Working closely with the Digital Director to ensure that developments are appropriately scoped, documented and justified for delivery within the Society, both commercially and charitably. Liaise closely with the Digital Director and Leadership Team to ensure that developments are correctly prioritised and scheduled for delivery. Accountabilities: Managing the team and projects

3 1. Manage and grow a talented team of web developers and external contractors (as required) to develop and implement web applications in a multi-site, customer facing environment. 2. Manage resource allocation, and schedule and delegate tasks in order to ensure developments are delivered on time, to budget and specification, initiating corrective actions where necessary. 3. Participate in requirement gathering efforts as needed, liaising with key stakeholders, and ensuring that deliverables meet the needs of both internal clients and end users. 4. Maintain project responsibility throughout all phases, including specifications gathering, designing, implementation, testing and deployment. 5. Ensure that the needs of end-users (customers and content editors) are appropriately considered and represented in online developments by coordinating any appropriate user research, and maintaining systems and procedures for gaining user feedback. 6. Ensure project management process requirements are met including governance, reporting, communication and documentation appropriate to each development. 7. Work with the Digital Director to create and manage an RHS roadmap for digital development. Managing quality, testing and legal requirements 8. Performing root cause analysis on product and process deficiencies, and defining and implementing changes. 9. Oversee quality assurance and user acceptance testing for the website with an emphasis on cross browser compatibility and mobile device support 10. Develop, maintain and review quality assurance and user acceptance test standards. 11. Ensure that legal & regulatory requirements are met, and professional standards are applied to all RHS online developments, including data protection, disability discrimination and intellectual property laws. Provide direction and leadership with regards to the team s processes, tools, and techniques and work with lead developers to define and implement code guidelines, and development standards. 13. Motivate and inspire your team in order to create a sustainable and loyal base adding value to the wider Society as a whole. 14. Work closely with other business areas as required (in particular IT development) to understand interdependencies and associated pipeline and priorities for projects. 15. Work in partnership with the IT operations team for general server operations, security issues, and optimization efforts. 16. Carry out tasks and initiatives assigned by the Digital Director. 17. Perform general management functions including participating in technical assessments, performance reviews, mentoring, hiring, training and other related duties as assigned. 18. Stay abreast of advancements and best practices in software development, content management, and web architecture. 19. Identify, Track, Document, and Schedule requested web changes. 20. Manage budgets & timelines for various digital marketing developments in conjunction with Finance team. 21. To adhere to current health and safety legislation and best practice in accordance with the Society s Health and Safety Policy Statement. 22. To undertake any other duties as may be reasonably required across all RHS sites including overnight stays as required.

5 PERSON SPECIFICATION Digital Development Manager KNOWLEDGE: ESSENTIAL: 1. Working knowledge of project management frameworks 2. Working knowledge of digital development processes including requirements gathering, design, QA, deployment strategies, and development tools and technologies 3. Base level knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, IIS, SQL Server, MySql, Web Services and other technologies and languages germane to the industry 4. Experience and knowledge of using a variety of CMS tools. 5. Good knowledge of trends in online and digital development 6. Draw from an in-depth knowledge and understanding of web standards, best practices, and emerging technologies 7. Understanding of online usability and quality standards 8. Knowledge of Office 2010/13 business applications DESIRABLE: 9. Knowledge of development tools such as Atlassian JIRA 10. Experience of Agile software development methodologies 11. Knowledge of and interest in horticulture EXPERIENCE: ESSENTIAL: 1. Experience of delivering high scale, high performance websites with complex integration needs, to time, budget and quality. 2. Experience of maintaining a productive workflow of multiple projects at once 3. Experience of working in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders from different functions and levels of seniority. 4. Experience of building and managing internal development teams to deliver projects on schedule. 5. Relationship building of direct reports, project teams, stakeholders & internal customers. 6. Experience of managing project budgets to a value of 500,000 (incl. resources) DESIRABLE: 1. Experience of business analysis processes
