2 THE RPL PROCESS Welcome to Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) with Tec-NQ. RPL is the formal recognition of the skills and knowledge you have acquired regardless of how or where they have been attained through: Previous formal or informal training/education (at a registered training organisation (RTO), training facility or place of work) Work experience (paid or unpaid work) Voluntary work Life experience RPL can be achieved in a unit/s of competency or an entire qualification without having to attend formal training. Below is a brief outline of the process aligned to undertaking RPL. Step 1 - Issuance of the RPL kit Contact is made with the Industry Liaison Officer - Carpentry and Plumbing to discuss the process, either by phone or in person. At this stage you will be advised on the process including evidence collection, enrolment and assessment and issued with an RPL application kit. Step 2 - Completion of RPL kit Complete the self assessment, identify the units you wish to gain Recognition (RPL) for, gather your evidence and complete the application forms. Evidence recommended to support an application could include: Any licences Resume Certificates/results of assessment Indentures/trade papers Results/statement of attendance/certificates in house courses, workshops, seminars Results/statements of attendance/ certificates club courses e.g. first aid, officials, surf life saving, etc Endorsed photographs of work undertaken or produced Work examples Diaries/task sheets/job sheets/log books Membership of relevant professional associations Hobbies/interests/special skills outside work References/letters from previous employers/supervisors Industry awards Any other documentation that may demonstrate industry experience related to units applied for Third party verifications Commence collection evidence to support you RPL.
3 Step 3 - RPL kit submission Contact Tec-NQ and submit your completed RPL Kit. Tec-NQ will review your submission and contact you to schedule your pre-assessment interview. Upon confirmation of your pre-assessment interview you will be invoiced a $ RPL application fee. Payment for this fee is required prior to your interview. Step 4 - Pre-assessment interview At the interview your Facilitator will ask you a range of trade-related questions to assist them in determining your skills and competence level. Your Facilitator may request that you gather and submit further supplementary evidence to support your application. The interview may be conducted face-to-face, by phone or electronically. Following this interview, you will be invoiced the assessment fee of $ Payment for this fee is required before Tec-NQ will proceed with the formal assessment process. Step 5 - Formal assessment The formal assessment process may consist of the review of supplementary evidence or a workplace visit to collect further practical evidence. Your Facilitator will conduct a formal review of all of the information collected and provide an overview of the outcomes you may achieve. At this point you will be invoiced a $ issuance fee to finalise the RPL process. Step 6 - Notification of outcome Once your formal assessment is complete your Facilitator will advise you if you have been successful in obtaining a full qualification or partial completion towards your chosen qualification. At this point your Facilitator will advise you of any gap training that may be required to complete your chosen qualification. If further training is required, a gap assessment training plan and quote for training will be developed and presented to the participant to complete their chosen qualification. If you believe your assessment is incorrect, you have a right to appeal. Please refer to the Tec-NQ Appeals process. Step 7 - Issuance of RPL outcomes You will be provided with the formal certificates for your training outcomes within 28 days of notification. This may include a Statement of Attainment for any unit/s of competency attained and/or qualifications completed. If you wish to proceed with the gap assessment training plan provided by Tec-NQ, please contact our administration department to enrol for training.
4 CREDIT TRANSFER You may be entitled to Credit Transfers if you have completed training at another Registered Training Organisation and have Statements of Attainment for competencies that are equivalent to Units of Competency contained within the course you are seeking Recognition in. Credit transfer will also be given where there has been some determination by a qualified assessor that equivalence exists against the vocational outcomes of the current program under the colleges QA process. A qualification cannot be attained entirely through credit transfer you must be enrolled in at least one unit from the course you are applying for RPL. OUTCOMES Evidence: There are a number of criteria underpinning an assessment of current competence or decision making in the RPL process. These include: Currency are your skills current; do you still use these skills regularly in this employment; is your evidence recent? Relevance is the evidence you collected relevant to the course you re claiming; are your previously acquired skills relevant to your current workplace? Authenticity/Validity Can you prove that you actually have these skills and knowledge; can you obtain verification of these skills? Quality are you able to perform these skills to industry standards; is there sufficient evidence to prove you are competent? Types of evidence: There are numerous types of evidence you can provide to successfully gain RPL. Four such categories are: 1. Direct evidence questions undertaken with our assessor, observations in the workplace by our assessor. 2. Indirect evidence statements by your employer regarding your work performance (written or verbal); samples of work; performance appraisals 3. Personal statements details outlining the functions you undertake and work activities 4. Supplementary evidence any further information you provide. Please be aware that if the evidence you supply is not sufficient or current you may be asked to undertake a skills assessment to prove you have the skills and knowledge to gain the RPL. 5 WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A RECOGNISED AS A DRAINER? Certificate II in Drainage is the qualification in Plumbing Industry, as the minimum qualification in progressing to a licensed provisional drainer. This job is hands on and often physically demanding. Construction trade s assistant may undertake the following duties: Planning, designing, installing and maintaining below ground sanitary and stormwater drainage systems. Installation, maintenance, testing and repairing pipes in stormwater or sanitary drainage Installation of domestic treatment plant The Certificate II in Drainage qualification requires the completion of: 22 units of competency; 18 core units 4 elective units *To meet Queensland Building and Construction Commission Licensing requirements a combination of 22 competencies from the above streams must be achieved. A Drainage tradesperson will have the following qualities: Interested in practical work Able to work with your hands A sense of balance and ability to work at heights Good at mathematics Enjoy working in a team If you are doing these roles in your job, then don t write off your skills consider getting them recognised.

Delivery takes place in Tec-NQ s state-of-the-art workshops where apprentices can both observe and participate in hands-on training exercises.
