5 Preface 1998 in Växjö/Sweden, Professor Bengt G. Lundberg suggested a conference and workshop series to perspectives in business informatics research. Thanks to his initiative numerous scientific and personal connections, even outside the conference, could be intensified in Rostock/Germany the last BIR-2000 Workshop took place. Due to the unexpected death of Professor Lundberg in 2001 the preparations of the next conference have been stopped. We are very proud to continue the conference series in commemoration to Professor Lundberg. The BIR-2003 Conference is held in Berlin from September 18 to September 20, The conference is jointly organized by Humboldt-University of Berlin and University of Potsdam. The paper contributions of the conference participants are presented in the conference proceedings. The papers deal with actual problems in knowledge management process management information systems communication system development software engineering, software design modelling e-commerce, e-business, business value e-learning The editor expresses his gratitude for the preparation and processing of these conference proceedings to Robert Cuno, Thomas Michalk and Katja Andresen.
