LEARNING IN REAL-WORLD ENVIRONMENTS Nursing is taught at the Campbelltown, Hawkesbury, Lithgow and Parramatta campuses. Midwifery is taught at the Parramatta campus. All locations have modern, fully equipped Clinical Practice Units, including a maternity ward on the Parramatta campus. These units contain simulation labs designed to replicate the practice environments in the real world. This preparation enables our students to engage confidently and competently when participating in scheduled clinical placements. If you have a strong interest in, and aptitude for, nursing, and are interested in a career involving leadership in research and practice, this course has been designed for you. This course aims to challenge and further develop our students leadership capacity through participation in: advanced coursework, extension activities, research training and enhanced professional practice opportunities. A mentoring program will link you with experienced academic staff and research groups within Western Sydney University. This will allow you to take part in the University s research activities. Aspects of the advanced coursework and extension activities will involve advanced nursing strategies and opportunities to work collaboratively with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team. ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA To be enrolled in Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced), students must comply with NSW Ministry of Health Special Requirements for clinical practicum. These include: 1. National Police Check or a criminal record clearance card/letter; International students require a police check (with English translation) from their own country or any country they have lived, as well as one from Australia 2. Meet NSW Ministry of Health verification requirements with regard to immunisation (a completed vaccination card with serology results) 3. NSW Health Code of Conduct signed 4. Student Undertaking Placement/ Declaration signed 5. A valid Working with Children Check 6. A current, approved First Aid certificate. All must be completed before students are eligible for clinical placement. CORE UNITS AND ELECTIVES To graduate with a Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced), you are required to complete in a full-time mode of study, 24 units consisting of 17 core units from the Bachelor of Nursing degree plus six specifically nominated Advanced units and one elective unit. Students must maintain a grade point average of 5.5 or above to remain in this course and you will be required to sign a declaration acknowledging the requirement when you enrol. AREAS YOU WILL STUDY INCLUDE: The course follows the pattern described for the Bachelor of Nursing So, in addition to research, all nursing career practice opportunities are open to graduates of this degree. Areas of study include: Conceptualising Nursing; Primary Health Care in Action; Evidence Based Professional Nursing Practice; Application of Behavioural, Social and Biophysical Sciences in Nursing and Health Care. The Bachelor of Nursing (Graduate Entry) is a specialised program designed for applicants who hold a relevant Bachelor degree, Graduate Diploma, Masters degree or a nursing qualification from Australia or another country. The course is two years beginning in the Summer session with an intensive full-time unit of study offered at the Parramatta campus. SELECTION CRITERIA Applicants must have successfully completed an (AEI-NOOSR equivalent) undergraduate degree, Graduate Diploma, Masters degree, or higher in biological sciences, health or behavioural science (completed within the last 10 years), OR completed a three-year post-secondary qualification as a registered nurse (completed within the last 10 years). Qualifications are reviewed in the context of the Australian Education International (AEI) assessment through the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR). Applications from Australian and New Zealand citizens and holders of permanent resident visas must be made via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). Applicants who have undertaken studies overseas will have to provide proof of proficiency in English. Students commence this course by undertaking an accelerated introductory unit, providing an overview of the knowledge and skills in fundamental nursing practice. Satisfactory completion of this unit enables progression to the other 16 core units. It is through this engagement with people that nurses have the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of individuals and their communities. ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA If you are not a 2016 Australian Year 12 student and have not completed studies to the level of the NSW HSC or equivalent, we recommend you sit the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Enrolled Nurses are not required to sit the STAT. All Enrolled Nurses have guaranteed entry. Graduates from The College s University Foundation Studies Nursing course may be admitted to the Bachelor of Nursing degree at Western Sydney University provided they achieve a minimum Grade Point Average of 7 in the Foundation Course and a minimum of a B Grade in the Academic English unit. Applicants who hold overseas professional nurse qualifications/registration or a related degree, Graduate Diploma, Masters degree, or higher in the human biological or behavioural and social sciences are advised to seek advice relating to their eligibility to enter the Bachelor of Nursing (Graduate Entry) degree. To be enrolled in Bachelor of Nursing, students must comply with NSW Ministry of Health Special Requirements for clinical practicum. These include: 1. National Police Check or a criminal record clearance card/letter; International students require a police check (with English translation) from their own country or any country they have lived, as well as one from Australia 2. Meet NSW Ministry of Health verification requirements with regard to immunisation (a completed vaccination card with serology results) 3. NSW Health Code of Conduct signed 4. For more information and advice, call the Course Information Centre on ADVANCED STANDING Applicants awarded a Diploma in Nursing from NSW TAFE will be eligible for advanced standing of eight first-year units plus unspecified credit for an elective unit resulting in 90 credit points of advanced standing. Applicants with the Enrolled Nurse Division 2 Certificate IV or Enrolled Endorsed Nurse Division 2 Advanced Certificate, will be eligible for advanced standing of three specified core units and an elective unit. Applicants with other qualifications will be assessed for advanced standing on a caseby-case basis. Advanced standing could be granted where there is evidence of a minimum of 80 per cent match in content per unit to previous studies. Advanced standing may also be subject to successful completion of a theory and/or Skills Challenge test. CORE UNITS AND ELECTIVES To graduate with a Bachelor of Nursing, you are required to complete 24 units. These units include: Professional Practice Experience; Primary Health Care in Action; Bioscience; Professional Communication; Health Variations; Being a Professional Nurse or Midwife; and Leadership in Nursing and Midwifery. 13 Bachelor of Midwifery COURSE UAC WS INTAKE LOCATION DURATION ATAR B Midwifery February Parramatta 3F Key: B = Bachelor of; F = Full-time. The Bachelor of Midwifery degree has been designed to develop skilled and caring midwives with the expertise to support women and their families during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. Graduates will develop skills to work in partnership with women and collaborate with other members of the health care team in order to provide woman-centred care. The course has been divided evenly into 50 per cent theoretical component and 50 per cent practical component spread across the full three years of the program. This course is offered on the Parramatta campus. During your studies, you will learn about the science and art of midwifery knowledge and practice, the principles of primary health care, how to work in partnership with women from all cultures and how to translate theory and research into practice. Practice experiences will occur in a variety of areas, such as antenatal clinics and wards, birthing units, postnatal wards, newborn nursery and community. This experience will be undertaken in blocks of time (from one day a week to five days per week) during the three-year course, with fewer clinical hours in first year compared to second year, and the majority occurring in the third year. The practice experience also includes placement with caseload midwives, privately practising midwives and child and family health professionals. Students will begin their first midwifery practice placement in the first semester of the Bachelor of Midwifery degree, after they have met all the prerequisites for clinical placement. Students will attend antenatal clinics on a weekly basis and begin by observing the practice of midwifery care. In lab-based simulations students will develop confidence in midwifery skills and the provision of midwifery care. Throughout their degree, students will also be required to meet and work in partnership with 10 women to gain experience in midwifery continuity of care. Under the supervision of a registered midwife, students will follow the women through their pregnancy, labour and birth and during the postnatal period for up to six weeks. These continuity of care experiences will be spread across the three years: two in first year, three in second year and five in the third year. PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION Successful completion of the course enables you to apply for registration as a registered midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), which is a partner board of the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Authority (AHPRA). SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS PREREQUISITES To gain entry into our Bachelor of Midwifery course, all eligible students will participate in an interview selection process. To be enrolled in Bachelor of Midwifery, students must comply with NSW Ministry of Health Special Requirements for clinical practicum. These include: 1. National Police Check or a criminal record clearance card/letter; International students require a police check (with English translation) from their own country or any country they have lived, as well as one from Australia 2. Meet NSW Ministry of Health verification requirements with regard to immunisation (a completed vaccination card with serology results) 3. NSW Health Code of Conduct signed 4. Student Undertaking Placement/ Declaration signed 5. A valid Working with Children Check 6. A current, approved First Aid certificate. All must be completed before students are eligible for clinical placement. In order to satisfy the requirements for Continuity of Care, students will be required to follow women throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. This may require students to attend a birth during the evening or at night. Students must have access to safe transport arrangements in order to satisfy this requirement. CORE UNITS AND ELECTIVES To graduate with a Bachelor of Midwifery, you will be required to complete 24 units. The core units you will study in this degree include: Bioscience; Midwifery Knowledge; Midwifery Practice; Human Relationships and Life Transitions; Health in a Culturally Diverse Community; Promoting Mental Health and Wellbeing; and Leadership in Nursing and Midwifery. You will have one elective practice placement, which will enable you to experience an alternative model of midwifery care. PRACTICAL PLACEMENTS Practice placements will occur across the full calendar year. The majority of practice placements will occur within one Local Health District. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Registered midwives have the opportunity to work in a number of settings that include hospitals, in metropolitan, rural, and remote areas as well as the community (including home). Midwives can be self-employed and work as privately practising midwives, be employed in public and private hospitals, and work in caseload midwifery programs and group midwifery practice. Their roles include antenatal, postnatal and birthing care, research, education, management and policy development. FURTHER STUDIES In 2017 the Bachelor of Applied Leadership and Critical Thinking or the Bachelor of Data Science can be combined with any Bachelor degree at Western Sydney University.
