4 12 WATTS 12 Watts is a 12 month training internship program to develop leadership skills in young people. The program is the result of a partnership between Camp Wilkin and Whitley Baptist College. It allows interns to train in a camp setting and earn points towards one of the TAFE certificates in Outdoor Ed and Hospitality and The Associate Diploma in Ministry. Interns can gain certificates in outdoor activities including bike education, bronze surf, high ropes, canoeing and first aid. Interns who participate in the 12 WATTS program develop their leadership skills, gain valuable ministry experiences, stretch their limits through outdoor experiences, and make new lifelong friends. 12Watts is an introductory program that develops young leaders who are ready to serve Jesus with their heart and hands. During the year students live and serve at Camp Wilkin in Anglesea, Victoria, Australia. They attend 100 hours of lectures on site by qualified lecturers from Whitley College. Interns also participate in several outdoor adventure activities that stretch, challenge and teach them how to work as a team. When I finished school I wasn t sure what I wanted to do. A year at Wilkin was too good to be true. What could be better than being paid to attend Bible College lecturers while living and working at camp? Intern 4

5 Leadership Program Is God calling you to leadership? Camp Wilkin provides an opportunity to listen, discuss and discover God s call on your life. The classes, adventure trips, and Camp experience will take you outside of your comfort zone and begin to un-wrap your potential. You will be able to connect with key leaders who will help you to develop your heart for ministry. You will work beside highly skilled practitioners and develop your own style of leadership through their mentoring. You will study three units, two each semester. Each unit will give your 15 points towards the Associate Diploma in Ministry at Whitley Baptist College Melbourne. Whitley is affiliated with the University of Melbourne. Three units can be completed the next year to gain your diploma. The small class size at Camp Wilkin allows you to interact with lecturers and receive individual assistance with your studies. Camp Life Camp Wilkin has a staff of over 20, including both full and part time staff. All staff members in ministry co-ordinator positions, are committed Christians. Three couples live on site with their families. Interns also live on site. The camp policy is to treat all staff members and campers in a Christ like way. Staff work hours are flexible, including day and evening work, seven days a week. Clients are mainly school groups during the week and churches or community groups at weekends. Interns will observe strategies for managing different groups, as trained staff lead groups differently, according to age, experience and needs. 5

6 Small Community Because there is only a small number of students you have the opportunity to form close relationships with others interns. During the year you study, serve, and socialise with each other and your mentors who will support, challenge, teach and be there for you. Together you help one another to become the people God wants you to be. Adventure There are many things that contribute to the adventure of Camp Wilkin; living with other believers, participating in outdoor adventure, and ministering in church and community. The program is designed to help build relationships and community, stretch personal boundaries and limits, develop personal and leadership skills and for pure enjoyment. 7 Camp Wilkin and Burnside Camp Camp Wilkin is a property of the Baptist Union of Victoria under the management of the Camp Wilkin Committee. The Camp property of approximately 6.5 hectares is available to Churches, Schools and other approved groups. A catering service provides all meals. Camp Wilkin has accommodation for 160 campers. The Camp is well equipped for outdoor activities and the Programme Coordinator and his staff provide instruction in both on site and off site activities. Situated at the corner of Noble Street and Golf Links Road, the Camp is just 1.2 km from Anglesea shopping centre, and a similar distance from the main surf beach. A safer beach for younger children is 3 km away at Point Roadknight. 7

8 Burnside Camp, is managed by Camp Wilkin and owned a by the Uniting Church of Australia. This camp is approximately 1 km from the centre of Anglesea and has accommodation for 100 campers. Both catered and self catered camps are available. Burnside Camp works closely with Camp Wilkin and the Co-ordinator provides instruction in both on site and off site activities. Both Camps have a bus for transporting campers to local activities if required. Both camps have outdoor chapels. Extra qualified staff are available when necessary for activities. Health and safety is of paramount importance. 8

9 LOCATION Anglesea The seaside town of Anglesea is situated along the scenic Great Ocean Road on the Anglesea River, between the nearby coastal towns of Torquay and Aireys Inlet. Anglesea is a particularly significant town on the Great Ocean Road as it marks the first spot south-west of the road's official start at Torquay where it meets the coast. Patrolled surf and swimming beaches surrounded by beautiful forest and coastal scenery make Anglesea a popular tourist resort with the vast expanse of sand surrounding the mouth of the Anglesea River being a popular spot for swimmers. Other scenic spots along the coast include the rocky Point Roadknight and the lookouts off Harvey Street and the Great Ocean Road above the town's main surf beach. Attractive parks and gardens line the coastal foreshore and the Anglesea River, with Coogoorah Park at the end of River Reserve Road featuring a network of islands linked by boardwalks and bridges through wetlands. Anglesea is home to the Alcoa Open Cut Mine which uses locally mined coal to generate electricity. Geelong Geelong is just 35 kilometers from Anglesea. As the largest provincial city in Victoria it provides excellent shopping, sporting and educational facilities and entertainment. Manufacturing, heavy industry and port facilities are but a few of the employment opportunities in Geelong. Geelong is the second largest city in Victoria. Set on the banks of the Barwon River and fronting Corio Bay, the city boasts a population of over 200,000 including surrounding suburbs. Modern shopping facilities, galleries, beautiful gardens, foreshore reserves and sporting venues are just a taste of some of the attractions this city has to offer. Geelong is one hour from Melbourne by train, or bus and car on the dual highway. 9

10 Great Ocean Road Anglesea is situated on The Great Ocean Road. The region is named after the road of the same name which follows much of the rugged Victorian south-west coast. This road was constructed by ex-servicemen and the unemployed between 1918 and 1932 and is dedicated to those that lost their lives in World War One. The road passes through the popular holiday resort of Lorne, the fishing town of Apollo Bay, and then it heads inland traversing the lush Otway National Park. The final leg covers the "Shipwreck Coast" where many vessels in the 1800s ran aground on their journey from England. The most famous attraction in the region is the rock formation known as the "12 Apostles" near Port Campbell, carved out of the limestone headlands by rough seas over time. MINISTRY INVOLVEMENT An essential part of the intern program is ministry involvement, and you have the opportunity to serve through the Local Church, Primary School and community groups. 10

11 Local Church Camp Wilkin has a close relationship with the Anglesea Baptist Church. Camp Wilkin was instrumental in the development of the Church. Interns will be encouraged to commit to the local church and be regularly involved in its fellowship. The church has developed an extensive youth program which will provide an opportunity for interns to serve in leadership. Ministry Trips Opportunity to serve will be available through ministry trips as they are developed by Camp Wilkin in conjunction with different churches. OTHER MINISTRY EXPERIENCES As well as regular involvement in a local church, students will be exposed to a variety of ministry experiences including: Christian Religious Education (CRE) Kids at Risk Program First Offender Program Berry Street program After School program ESP program (enhance students potential) STUDENT FACILITIES Accommodation will be provided on site. Each intern will have their own room. A communal lounge will be available for the use of all interns. Interns will be provided with meals from the camp kitchen when camps are in. Basic foods such as bread, milk, breakfast cereals will be provided from the camp store. 11

12 STUDENT LIFE There is a daily schedule but there is no typical schedule for a Wilkin program. Some weeks you are in class, you out on activities, doing ministry, or working on assignments. You meet with your supervisors every morning at each Monday meeting tasks are set for the week. (See attached weekly program) There will be three full weeks of study during the year with assignments from Whitley College. Training through Gordon TAFE will be assignments plus practical training on relative activities. You will meet regularly in small groups with staff, for prayer, support and discussion of issues from God s Word. This is a great opportunity to connect with people in a deeper way and care for one another. LEADERS Dean Lobbe, the Program Coordinator is the senior leader for interns. Interns are encouraged and mentored by our Ministry staff. Geoff Caldwell the Director of Camping is available to support the interns whenever required. ACADEMICS Classes are offered in modular format, which means the courses are completed in one or two week blocks rather than over a semester. Before a module begins, interns are given a syllabus that outlines the assignment to be completed before, during and after the class. Classes are taught on site by excellent Whitley College lecturers. The intern program aims at a fifty-fifty balance between academic and practical. 12

When there are big groups in they may be required to assist on other evenings as well. Maintenance and cleaning are an integral part of any campsite and interns will be required to assist in the various tasks associated with this at various times during any given week This schedule is only a guide and each week will be different. The Intern Supervisor will distribute weekly schedules at the start of each week ensuring Interns know what is happening for the week. 14
